Momma Told Me: Cake is NOT a breakfast food!
Recently I had the pleasure of trying a type of baked good I have never tried before; rum cake. I have heard so much about Tortuga (not the pirates, this isn't a Disney film) rum cakes and products. It turns out that Tortuga is actually the real name for a collection of islands off the Northwest Coast of Hispaniola in Haiti (the Caribbean). And you guessed it, Tortuga Rum Cakes are made in several bakeries located in the Cayman Islands, Barbados, Jamaica, and the Bahamas. How's that for authentic!? As wonderfully exotic as it sounds, Tortuga Rum was founded in 1984 by a Cayman Airways captain and his wife, beginning with their private label Barbados and Jamaican rums. Today this company is considered the largest duty free liquor company in the Cayman Islands with 18 local stores!
Lucky for us, we don't have to visit the Caribbean to enjoy this exotic treat, as millions of tourists do each year, we can order Tortuga Rum products and have the islands shipped to our door! Their are 11 flavors of rum cakes, including Coconut, Chocolate, Banana, and Taste of Florida Key Lime. In addition, Tortuga also sells fudge, sauces, coffee, honey and so much more. A 16 oz. Rum Cake and 8 oz. coffee gift pack retails for $29.95 directly from their website, and there are frequently coupons such as the current FIRE10 code for $4 of of $30. The pricing seemed a little high to me at first, but when you consider these products are genuine gourmet imports they make excellent gifts (holidays, housewarming, offices).
So, how did the actual rum cake stack up? Angie over at Tortuga kindly sent me a sample pack of 'A Taste of Florida- Key Lime' and 'Golden Original' rum cakes to pair with their Chocolate Cinnamon Gourmet Ground Coffee. I loved the packaging instantly, so premium and colorful, the 4oz. rum cakes opened up to reveal some fun facts about the company and suggestions for serving options. Upon removing the Golden Original cake from it's packaging I was delighted to notice the surface almost glistened, moist, and the aroma was of rich rum. The second cake had a softer aroma, and was garnished with slivers of nuts. Next, I prepared my coffee, which favored a soft cinnamon scent.
All set up, coffee wafting with the delicious sweet and pungent smell of rum cake, my mouth began to salivate. I sliced the 4oz cakes into 4 slices and slid my fork into the moist cake. Words cannot describe the taste journey my mouth took, but since this is a blog, ha ha, I will try. Tortuga's Golden Original Rum Cake hit my palate with an aroma of rum paired with the luscious golden sweetness of sugar and spices. It is interesting how the rum itself plays a predominantly aromatic sense whereas the cake itself intertwines with the sweet then the moist sensations. In all of my baking endeavors, why have I never tried to make rum cake? I expected the Key Lime to have a strong bitter taste, but once again the flavors play an accent to compliment the cake itself. Key Lime was lighter in taste and a little more moist. Both paired wonderfully with the Cinnamon Tortuga coffee. For those interested in the nutritional information, 2oz of the Golden Rum Cake is equal to 200 calories. That's half of the cakes I reviewed. With a cup of coffee for an after dinner treat, it's quite reasonable!
Over all, I am delighted with this wonderfully family owned and operated company that offers premium, quality treats at a reasonable price. Their customer service is wonderful to deal with, and their standard shipping was exceptionally fast for fresh baked goods! I am already picking out some gifts for my Christmas shopping, and I can't wait to try their fudge!
What daughter says: Okay, I can't advocate eating cake for breakfast, at least not every day (as the little girl inside me stomps her feet). But a 2oz serving of Tortuga Rum Cake is less calories than the suggested 1 cup serving of the leading kid's cereal. And, if you pair THIS cake with a cup of fresh fruit, who's to say you can't have cake for breakfast once in a while?
I bet you're ready to try Tortuga Rum Cakes for yourself- so I have been generously offered a 16oz Rum Cake and Coffee Combo (a $29.95 value) to give away to one of my lucky readers!
