Magellan® RoadMate® 5175T-LM Traveler GPS Navigator

When looking for items to feature in the "Luxury Gift Guide", I was pleased to come across the opportunity to review a Magellan® RoadMate® 5175T-LM Traveler GPS Navigator. The Magellan Traveler GPS is a full-featured, Wi-Fi enabled GPS navigator with a nice, large 5" high-resolution touchscreen with flexible viewing in portrait or landscape mode, Free Lifetime Map Updates, Lifetime Traffic Alerts, and automatic software updates.

Other features include; QuickSpell® with SmartCity which will automatically, fill in what it "thinks" you are looking for. This is a very handy tool, which can save you a lot of time and frustration, when imputing destination requests. With Multi-destination Routing; you can plan a trip with multiple stops and in any order you want. You can also optimize your itinerary for the most efficient route.
This is not your, run of the mill, GPS Device. It is more than just a mapping tool; it is designed to help you create spontaneous roadside adventures, using its planning tools such as, the TourDirector (which is exclusive to the Magellen Traveler GPS) and is a tool that allows you to choose attractions and plan your day. This is like having your own, personal guide, assisting you with planning visits to nearby attractions and activities. It includes location ratings, descriptions, and approximate visit times for each of your destinations.

The Wi-Fi Web Browser allows you to search for destinations from any location with a Wi-Fi hotspot. This tool can assist you in searching for local points of interest, while traveling locally or across the country on a road trip. You can search for points of interest or services at upcoming exits. I can't tell you how many times my husband and I have driven down our nation's roads, and never gotten off of the highway. We have missed so much by doing that. Recently, I found out that I had driven right by the one of our National Parks. I didn't see the sign for the turnoff because; I was "nose down" in an atlas, trying to figure out where the heck we were! By the time we figured it out; we were several miles down the road. At that point; it wasn't of interest to us anymore. The sad part is that there was this special event going on that weekend, and we missed the opportunity, entirely. I was bummed out. This of course; all happened because we didn't have the benefit of tools like TourDirector and Wi-Fi browser. Just these two features alone, could have saved us a lot of grief.

Magellan has partnered with AAA. Only Magellan navigators include the built-in AAA TourBook® with Diamond ratings and descriptions on AAA-approved places. It includes a "Where am I?" feature, so you can identify your location, and if you are a AAA member, you can easily access Roadside Assistance phone numbers from your device. This function can assist you in picking the best places for your, specific recreational needs, places to stay and restaurant to dine in. That way you get the full benefit from being a AAA member.

You also have the option of using the Magellan Traveler GPS to personalize your travel experiences with the OneTouchTM menu of your favorite places and searches. It's simple to use; just bookmark your favorite coffee shop, restaurant, gas station, or bank. The Magellan Traveler GPS will let you know, exactly where the nearest ones are, in proximity to your current location, while traveling. The System comes with subscription-free Lifetime Traffic Alerts, Highway Lane Assist (which really comes in handy) and Spoken Street Names (another very important feature), in my opinion.

With Free Lifetime Maps you should be able to navigate through, or around, almost anything. When utilizing the "Speed Limit Warnings" function you can hear and see warnings, enabling you to adjust your speed within local limits. This feature, alone makes the purchase price of the Magellan Traveler GPS ($299.00) well worth it. Have you seen what a ticket for speeding will cost you? Not to mention the jump in your auto insurance rates. I wouldn't be a responsible adult, if I didn't note the obvious safety issues involved in speeding, as well. (That's the "Mom" coming out in me).

So; to wrap all of this information up into a nice, neat, little package (perhaps a gift for someone on your holiday list) I'll give you my overall impressions. This is a really handy, functional and well thought out GPS Device. Magellan has taken the extra steps to ensure that they have addressed common traveling issues and offered good solid tools, in an effort to enhance its customers traveling experiences. They have thought of things that; I personally, never would have known were, or could be, options.

This GPS Device is very quick to recalculate when you, either make a wrong turn, or simply decide to take a different route and it gives you plenty of warning before you need to make a turn, or exit an off-ramp. It even makes sure that you stay in the correct lane of traffic for your transitions. That is so cool! With the Magellan® RoadMate® 5175T-LM Traveler GPS Navigator, there really is no excuse to getting lost, missing your exit, running out of gas, and missing that very last restaurant along the highway (20 miles back). You could have been there! You just didn't have the right GPS Device to tell you exactly "where to go", literally.
