Momma Told Me: Put a jacket on, you'll catch your death!
Growing up, I was the worst when it came to listening to my parent's 'cliches'. I'd go without socks, leave my sweater at home, walk to the bus with wet hair in the Winter, and leave the windows open all night. It's not that I enjoyed being sick, though my mother treated me like a princess when I was- I was just stubborn. I still do it, though there is no one to hand deliver a Slurpee and bubblegum to my bedside today. Every (Southern California) Winter I'm caught off my feet for days with colds I'm certain I achieve by sitting in from of the air conditioner with dripping hair, or wandering around on cold mornings in flip flops. It's not that I think I have an immune system of steel (quite the opposite, really), it's simple laziness. Drying my hair takes time, I can never find the second shoe, and Winter coats just aren't cute enough to match my new blouse!
Mothers understand the importance of a sick child's comfort. No one likes to see their son or daughter with the sniffles or a fever, and as today's moms become more eco-conscious green solutions matter. With teenagers misusing cough syrup, and the fear of over medicating with cold and flu aids, moms of today need solutions they can feel good about offering their child. And adults need an effect method of comfort that compliments the aesthetics of their home. Crane specializes in a variety of children's humidifiers designed to reassure children with cute animal models and calming mist, as well as a wide range of modernly stylized home units. Their vibrant Drop units easily appeal to both demographics with sleek curves and vibrant colors.
Humidifiers are wonderful sleeping aids for any age, and great treatments for dry skin, chapped lips, and breathing ailments due to the common cold/flu. Did you know that the FDA advises against use of any over the counter medication for children under 6 due to harmful side effects? Common cough and cold medication can also lead to increased liver problems and mild dependency! Crane's ultrasonic cool mist humidifiers are marketed as safe for children because they do not heat the water with hot elements that could burn children. The mist is cooled by ultrasonic waves and dispersed evenly, bedside. These motors are also whisper quiet for a soothing effect that will not interrupt much needed sleep.
Crane offered to send me one of their character humidifiers for review. While the brand has a delightful animal range (from owls to penguins), they have also licensed the rights to produce a Hello Kitty and Spongebob unit. I was thrilled to invite Spongebob into our home, as I've suffered from a horrible (night-time) post nasal drip for years. Humidifiers are also especially helpful for the comfort of asthmatics and those who suffer from allergies, or live in dry climates. This particular humidifier footprint is compact, thanks to the unique Spongebob square shape, and fits perfectly on our nightstand about 2 feet away from the bed. Set up was simple, and I loved the removable water basin and low power consumption. Out of the box this unit is about 1.5' tall and 7" deep. The large tank, atop the unit fills to about 2/3 (for proper running) and can last up to 16 hours on Low.
While I've previously owned one of crane's round, Adorable, humidifiers, I instantly fell in love with Spongebob for his practical space-saving build. The animal characters tend to be round in shape, thus more awkward to place bedside. Perhaps one of the most unique features of this unit is it's built in controls, which blend seamlessly into the character's design. Spongebob's feet are actually control knobs, perfect for small hands to easily grasp (though caution should be exercised with the weight of this unit and young children). The Left foot is designated as the on/off controll, while the Right foot turns to indicate one of three intensity levels. Between the feet, on the base, are two indicator lights (red for standby, and green for on), and a push button located on Spongebob's tie. This push button activates an internal light that illuminates the tank for a soothing night light feature that is quite calming!
I was equally impressed with how quiet this humidifier was! Operational noise is limited to a soft bubble here and there, which reminds me of a small fish tank motor. I had no trouble finding a good intensity setting. It's easy to watch the mist (it should never fall downward instead of spraying up) and determine an appropriate speed for the current atmosphere. Once I found my comfort level I laid back, and let the humidity work it's magic. Before I fell asleep, which was quicker than usual, I noticed a significant improvement in my breathing. My airways were less constricted, and much of the days congestion was breaking up. I left the humidifier on through the night, and it was still going in the morning. I had left it on low, and the gallon tank was only just half empty when I awoke. I simply love how quite and safe the Crane character humidifiers are, with their cool to the touch technology that eliminates any heat processing. You simply can't get any safer, or more adorable, (in my opinion) than that!
Like all humidifiers, sanitation and proper cleaning is vital. I really appreciate that they have taken the time to produce step-by-step videos on this process. Check out how easy weekly maintenance is!
