PB Crave: Artisan Peanut Butter Blends 2 Winner Giveaway and Review~ 4/26

Momma Told Me: There are some kids that have never even tasted peanut butter!

Peanut Butter. The simple phrase solicits a myriad of colorful childhood memories, comparable to a new pair of fuzzy socks, or fresh laundry on a rainy day. For me, the PB (as I like to call it) is a father and daughter thing; the only food that rivals dark chocolate in our worlds. Many of you know Papa to be a true foodie, with tastes for the incurably odd, boldly spicy, and bittersweet. It's ironic that I have inherited many of his peculiarities, as I can easily recall a time spent bartering mere bites of undesired food for extra minutes of TV time (4 year olds can be tough negotiators). Yes, my father is where I learned the mantra, 'You may never know if you don't like something, if you refuse to try it- but you'll also live a life without many things you'd love.' How does all of this tie into one of America's most beloved ingredients? Well, you see, while I spent nearly every day by Momma's side, she did not have the persuasive power of Papa.

It can be torture to get young children to eat all of their food, each meal, let alone a nutritious portion! I can recall afternoons on end, each summer, begging Momma for a peanut butter sandwich. I don't consider myself a picky eater, but there were those afternoons I would put up quite a fuss over having to eat an actual 'meal'. She'd always look down at me, shaking her head and hand on hip, and remind me that there were children in countries who'd never even heard of peanut butter. I'd curl my lip in horror at the thought, thinking about those unfortunate children, ultimately sulking into me seat to eat me nice, nutritious lunch, in thought. Now, an adult myself, I've done my fair share of research on nutrition and various foods. As it turns out, there are many types of nut butters, and various forms of peanut butter can actually prove a healthy part of a balanced lunch (especially paired with natural preserves).

Peanut butter, especially artisan blends such as PB Crave, can offer a high blend of nutrients, and hunger curbing protein. In fact, while the obvious feature of today's brand might be their unique flavor blends, there's something particularly extraordinary about PB Crave and their philanthropic mission. This, fairly new, start up company recently launched in the foodie market with a bold commitment to donate, a minimum of, 2% of all profits to Project Peanut Butter. This unique organization has saved the lives of over 100,000 children, worldwide, with donations of a peanut butter modeled substance. This paste helps provide the nutrients many third world country children lack in dietary structure. Did you know, worldwide, malnutrition is one of the leading causes of death (for children under 5)? What an eye opener!

PB Crave is not just committed to making the world better, they're committed to making your peanut butter sandwich better as well. For any true PB connoisseur, it's a well known fact that all peanut spreads are NOT created equal. While everyone has a preferred 'big name' brand, and the debate of 'chunky vs. smooth' still rages on, I submit a more natural peanut butter for your approval. Not only does PB Crave offer 4 varieties of creatively (lightly) chunky blends, but each of their artisan spreads are crafted with the finest natural MEL-O Honey. The decision to go with the natural honey, as it's base ingredient, makes for an ultimately smooth and creamy consistency. This very slick peanut butter (reminiscent of some of my favorite organic brands) is then paired with the finest premium mix-ins. Their flavors have fun and colorful names, such as Razzle Dazzle, Cookie Nookie, Coco Bananas and Choco Coco.

I received a sample package of all 4, 16oz, jars of PB Crave, for feature here on Momma Told Me. As soon as that wonderfully packed parcel arrived on our doorstep, there was some serious salivating going on! The first thing I noted, aside from the production and best by dates on the lids, was the consistency through the plastic jars. I could tell this peanut butter had a low melting point, as it had separated some in packaging. Peeling back the seal of our first choice, Coco Bananas, there was a think layer of melted peanut butter atop. This ended up being the case with all 4 jars, even after sitting in a cool cupboard for days; though the manufacturer suggests there is no refrigeration needed. I would tend to support this, as an attempt at refrigeration can cause separated product to blend less efficiently than that which has been at room temperature. The issue is quite usual with artisan and organic spreads, and is remedied with a few swift turns/mixes of the knife. The only problem we ran into with this, is the melting of the highly refined Belgian chocolate chunks, which tended to dissolve into the spread and color it darker.

What I instantly loved, was that the consistency was perfect for spreading. It offered an easy to manage thickness, that didn't chunk or glob on my bread. It was also, thick on my tongue yet, thin enough not to tear delicate sandwich bread (my preferred choice for this brand, Honey Oat). The base product flavor, the peanut butter itself, is a little more on the bitter side, which compliments the sweetness of the chosen artisan add ins. Belgian Chocolate Chunks, Cookie Dough Flavoring, and White Chocolate all help to add a touch of sophistication to this American classic. So how does it stack up? In all honesty, one brand still holds the flag as my favorite, in the PB category, but PB Crave is a close runner up. While the chocolate accents are tangible in the actual spread, I'd expected more of a flavor. PB Crave is still very much about the peanut butter, and delicious peanut butter at that. Perhaps they will release an 'Overloaded' or 'Motherload' specialty with double the chocolate or mix ins in the future. In any case, I feel their peanut butter alone, is marketable as a unique and flavorful spread; the additional flavor add ins are a nice accent, but not the star of the show here. The most successful blend? Coco Banana wins in our household, perfect with a lightly sweetened Strawberry Jam!
