Momma Told Me: As delicate as a baby's bottom.
Have you ever stopped to consider how many cliches there are about a baby's buttox? What is it about babies that conjure images of peace, and the smell of soft lilacs and powder? I've yet to have a baby of my own, but even I know there is something magical about them; how soft their delicate little skin is, how adorable they smell, and how peaceful they sleep (when they are actually sleeping, of course). Myself, I was a very temperamental baby with months of colic induced projectile vomiting (not so cute anymore, eh?), and night after night of screaming until my worn Pop would plop me in a car seat and drive around town at 4AM. That was, of course, until my parents discovered the magic of a baby bouncer, seat, on top of an active clothes dryer. And, while I grew out of most infant stages, there was one that seems to have stuck with me my entire life; a severe sensitivity to fragrance, particularly on fabric.
At around 4 my mother began to notice regular rashes and patches of welts breaking out on my skin. I went through the regular myriad of allergy tests and my doctor remained perplexed. No matter the adjustment to diet or environment, the rashes remained, and remained constant. I don't recall itching over it much, and only in very extreme cases do I itch over it today, but the visible signs of the reaction were enough to scare away any play dates. It made me quite self conscious until my mother, in a stroke of brilliance realized it was the laundry detergent, then Tide but since many other brands, that was causing the reaction. It was no wonder, with the offending residue coating everything from clothes and towels to plush toys and bedding! She immediately switched to the gentlest formula on the market, a variation of Arm and Hammer detergent. As an adult, I've longed for detergent with fragrance that doesn't make me break out; since moving to a condo with a communal laundry room I've even had to wash my clothes at my father's house. Just the reside from dryer sheets alone can make me experience hives!

Most recently we have relied on Purex Naturals (the Green bottle), using about half the suggested amount, but with no instance of hives. I love Purex, especially their Zout and Oxi varieties, so I was tickled to learn the brand was delving into a Baby line of liquid detergent and Purex Crystals (new for babies). While this line is designed for infants, to be gentle on baby skin, and hypoallergenic, it also offers a soft scent and the power of Purex whitening formulas. I have been known to pay near $20 for competing brands of Baby formulated detergent in especially tough times of 'contamination', and was beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to test these new products on myself. I must admit, it's been years since I last enjoyed fabric softener, as traditional offerings are so harsh on my skin, and have been longing to use Purex Crystals on my own clothing- this was the perfect answer!
Both Purex Baby Liquid and Purex Crystals for Baby Softener are dermatologist tested to be hypoallergenic, and feature a classic 'baby-inspired fragrance,' which I compare to baby powder. There are slight floral undertones, but the basic inspiration is classic 'baby' scent. Like the other Purex Crystalks products, the softener is 87% Natural, and expected to hit stores nationwide at WalMart in early February (though the Liquid formula is on sale now). Honestly, that is the only drawback I have with Purex products- they are sold in limited variety local to me; so I am glad to know the baby range will be nearby at WalMart. Having tested both products individually, and together, I could not be happier. Yes, I wish the fragrance was less powdery, but it is a fragrance that lingers on my fabrics for days after wash, and that is an improvement over fragrance free alternatives. I should say that I am also very impressed with the liquid formula's ability to fight stains, both as a pre-treatment, and in wash. I've successfully removed blood and wine from lighter fabrics, and am entirely allergic reaction free! Be sure to keep an eye out for the Purex Baby range at a WalMart near you, and head on over to the Purex Welcome To The World Sweepstakes, where one grand prize winner will score $1000 cash, and 250 runners up will win FREE Purex for Baby!
What Daughter Says: Don't compromise strength for skin gentle formulas, have both with the power of Purex Baby!
