Momma Told Me: Put your tongue back in your mouth!

From the very beginning we are fascinated with out mouths. Long before we can truly appreciate the culinary nuances of Kraft Mac N' Cheese or Mom's Meatloaf, we experiment by 'tasting' anything that which fits. It starts with binkies and thumbs (for some even fists), and moves onto pencils, crayons, and teddy bears. We'll try to eat Play-Doh and Elmer's Glue, pennies, and even grass; of course, for the novelty of the experience, not in search of actual sustenance. Then, as we grow up we learn the world is full of much too many delicious choices to bother with Popsicles or pinwheels. And yet, we are just as careless of the quality. Eating, arguably one of the highlights of my day, should be equally about nutrition and content. With studies showing less than 14% of present adults consider overall nutrition when choosing meals, the education of such practices is more important than ever.

I'll admit, I'm a sugar addict. If it weren't for my immaculate dental hygiene, I'd likely be toothless by now. As a child, I favored cereals for the coolest Saturday Morning commercials, and most colorful boxes. The more gimmicks, the better, and I was a 'hounder'. I can't reason quite why, as Momma never let me get away with it, and never gave in, but I'd be the puffy eyed kid stomping their feet and clutching a box of cereal. Next to General Mills' Lucky Charms, my favorite was always Cinnamon Toast Crunch. There was just something special about the way these toasted squares would sparkle atop a sea of milk. The flavorful ribbons of cinnamon would always flavor my bowl for a wonderful incentive to 'finish' my breakfast. It was unlike any other cereal on the shelf, and full of wonderful sugar.

Now, it seems I always find myself making this anecdote, but common sense dictates (no matter the advertising or campaigns), sugar coated cereal is still sugar coated cereal. While the General Mills brand has done wonders with their Nutritional Guide campaign, and easy to read, front of the box, icons; even the company themselves note that these crave-able cereals are intended as part of a healthy breakfast. Teaching proper portion control, and monitoring your child's ad-ons (orange juice, fresh fruit, yogurt) for additional content, is still an important part of great parenting. Even I can't get away with eating a (heaping)bowl a day, as much as I'd like!

Making Shopping Market Tantrums all the more inevitable, is General Mills's newest Cinnamon Toast Crunch rollout; Frosted Toast Crunch. Adding a sweet coating of vanilla 'frost' to these cinnamon squares brings a whole new level of flavor to the classic breakfast treat. Thankfully, Frosted Toast Crunch is still a great source of Whole Grain (11g), with 9g of sugar per serving, and viable amounts of Calcium. This variety is also an active participant in the Box Tops For Education campaign, where buyers can clip Box Top vouchers redeemable by their chosen school for cash and much needed supplies. This is one of my biggest reasons to support the General Mills brand, and a wonderful program our local schools truly value.

My Blog Spark and General Mills sent me a Frosted Toast Crunch Prize Pack to sample this new variety, including; a box of Frosted Toast Crunch, branded Pitcher and Spilt Milk Bowl with Lickety Spoon (by Fred). How could I not feel like a kid again with this adorable Silicone Bowl and Tongue Handle spoon? The cereal itself held up better than I'd anticipated. I was glad to find the 'frosted' aspect was in fact a frosting (as you'd find on Cheerios or F. Flakes), rather than a sugar powder coating. I think the actual frosting technique has added a little extra crunch to the cereal squares, and even makes them hold up better in milk! The flavor is more vanilla than cinnamon, which makes me a little sad, but is wonderful for snacking (dry) or working into marshmallow squares.

My biggest gripe about Frosted Toast Crunch is it's lack of availability. Despite being released early January, it's still trickling into our local stores (and I live on the outskirts of a major Metro area). Additionally, when it is stocked, the blue box blends in with the Frosted Cheerios or Cookie Crisps boxes nearby, and I always overlook it! Needless to say, we've bought several boxes since our initial encounter, and hope to do so in the future!

Right On The Walls: Vinyl Project Review and $25 Giveaway~ 2/10

Ever since you were little you wanted to make your mark. You picked up crayons, markers, make up, paint- and decorated whatever your tiny hands could smear flashes of color on. It's innate, even for those who don't consider themselves a 'decorator'. There is just something to be said about being able to make 'your space' unique, whether that's at home, the office, or a special event. So when Christy over at Right On The Walls contacted me to test drive her vinyl wall art I was overwhelmed. The selection on her site seems endless, and even if you can choose just one, then you have to wrestle with where to put it. There are so many possibilities, size, color, design- she even does custom requests! So if you somehow can't decide on any of her stock vinyl, simply contact her regarding your needs and ideas. Christy is truly a pleasure to deal with!

I browsed her site for a good hour, getting lost in the customer submitted projects, and attempting to narrow down my favorites (it was hard!) It's easy to be attracted to some of the more ornate designs, but less experienced vinyl amateurs may wish to stick with something simple at first. Personally, I've done a few vinyl related projects, and still find myself just as intimidated each time! Having just moved, this was the perfect opportunity to claim my new space and create a personalized home. After consulting with my other half, I decided to bravely navigate towards the Create Your Own Wall Decal platform. Unlike choppy Java reliant systems of other vinyl art websites, Right On The Walls had a smooth, modern, system for visualizing and creating custom vinyl. Starting with custom text specifications like color, font, and size, the buyer can literally visualize their project 'on the walls', as the project is generated in front of them. Next, the customer can browse a selection of clipart, or add a custom monogram. Cost is varied by size of font/clipart, and generally standard per character. For example, a 32 character (text based) custom vinyl piece, at 4" in height, will run you about $50.

Our new 'pad' has a fun vintage flair that includes our growing decor of genuine vintage electronics (think Super 8 and Atari), and Classic Progressive Rock homages. As a woman with Pink Floyd tattooed on her arm, and a generally fitting nod, we went with a variation of the classic 'Wish You Were Here' lyric: "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year." For space's sake, and budget, we condensed the message with a "2" and literal goldfish symbol (found in Right On The Walls clipart). Just because we couldn't find a Floyd reference in the website's library, didn't mean we couldn't still order exactly what we wanted! Within days, and right on time from the provided tracking information, a triangular poster tube arrived on our doorstep via USPS. Inside was our carefully rolled order, a 'tester' pawprint vinyl, Right On The Walls application tool, and complete Tips and Instructions. I should note, Right On The Walls is the only Vinyl company I've worked with that provides a free application tool with each order!

Our actual order was cut into 2 pieces, the orange vinyl (fish) and our black vinyl (text), which sprawled over several feet. When applying lettering the tendency might be to keep the entire strip in tact for uniform application- but I highly suggest clipping the vinyl into more manageable pieces. My first order of business was to cut my lettering into 3 even sized pieces, then rub the entire surface to ensure proper sticking to the transfer paper. Next, I measured out, and marked, an even distance from the ceiling, and centered my artwork. Right On The Walls suggests running a strip of masking or carpenter's tape down the middle of your vinyl to tack it up for viewing, and make the application process simpler. I highly suggest this right half/ left half method for beginners, as peeling an entire strand of vinyl can easily lead to hasteful tears or bubbles. In general, the most important thing to remember is to peel the sticker application paper off first, and use the application tool to smooth along the backing paper, as it's removed.

The entire project was done within 30 minutes, clean up included, and the immediate impact was dramatic. Vinyl wall art can help tie a room together, fill in a large space affordably, and add an extra level of personalization that just makes a home, a home! Right On The Walls art will work on a variety of surfaces; walls, mirrors, glass, plastic, metal- making the possibilities endless. Removal of vinyl art is always snap (great for renters), simply apply heat via a hair dryer on low to soften the image, then carefully peel back the decal with the applicator tool! Momma Told Me: Soft is sexy.

I have a friend, bless her, that is more enamored with cosmetics than me; the girl who totes a professional makeup case on vacation. When we first met I considered her quite attractive, and felt saddened by the apparent fact that she felt she must rely on foundations and primers to be beautiful. When I first saw her without makeup, after years of friendship, I solidified this opinion, and vowed, as a good friend, to help restore her confidence. Now, I don't claim to be a psychologist, or even a matchmaker, but after years of watching her date, I came to realize I was not the only one who took note. Time after time, whenever she'd slip away from the room, the topic would manage to come up. Her new beaus all found it intimidating that a girl would put so much effort into 'glamming it up', when they already had a committed relationship. I was also intrigued to hear that donning so much makeup every day made the look more novel, and less alluring. It was then I resolved to take a better look at my own regimen.

My biggest passion for makeup is color; yet getting dolled up and adding a dash of color doesn't have to mean layers of product. In fact, I find I get MORE comments from admirers when I tone it down and play up natural features (rather than paint a new face on). "You look so nice today, are you using a new foundation?" I'll hear, or "Your eyes really pop today, I love it!" Then, when I look in the mirror, as if to verify the compliment, I'll recall the thing I did different that day was to wear hardly any makeup at all! How's that for a confidence booster? So, when it comes down to romantic evenings, and intimate meet ups, like the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday, I often preach a softer look. Sure, for those still on the 'prowl' a nice smokey eye might reel 'em in, but I've already gt my man, and I intend to captivate him. In fact, I want his eyes to be all on me, even in my 'Little Black Dress'- so I'll be playing up my biggest assets; my lips and my eyes!

These days it seems the cosmetics aisle is larger than the junk food aisle (and I'm not sure if that's a good thing); the shelves and pegs roll on into one overwhelming collection of brands and colors. Just when you think you've found the right shade, then you're faced with choosing a format, and a brand. For this reason, I prefer shopping smaller based brands with targeted concepts and signature looks. One such place to browse a myriad of exclusive, and focused, brands, is Cosmetique. What initially made me loyal, to the online based branding, was the founder's commitment to quality. The 'Green Light' premise on new collections and products is that it must be of a high enough standard for those of the company, and their families. After all, if the people who make it, won't use it, would you? You've likely seen my previous features on Cosmetique brands Cadette, Madeliene Mono, and Jean-Michelle; for Valentine's Day I chose the softer collection of Arabella Stuart. The brand is known most for it's floral highlights and feminine colors, with the popular Art of Love fragrance collection, including my favorite, Endless Love. This particular fragrance is a very mellow, yet captivating blend of Patchouli, Violet, and Blue Rose. In fact, Arabella Stuart is primarily skin and fragrance products. Their limited color collection is precisely the targeted direction I prefer to see in a brand. It's nice to have a theme to fit an image or mood and Arabella Stuart's Shakespeare In Love Shadow/Blush Collection and Candlelight Finishing Powder certainly evoke thoughts of fair maidens and bashful romance.

I received Arabella Stuart's Shakespeare In Love Shadow/Blush Compact, Petal Soft Lipliner, and Polish Lipcolor for feature during Bubbles of Love. My initial impression was of the distinctly different soft pink colors and slender cartridge designs. I could easily stash all 3 pieces in a purse pocket and touch up on the run. I'll admit, the majority of my personal cosmetics come in bold black compacts, with flamboyant shaped wands and gimmicks. Arabella Stuart reminded me of my childhood, in a good sense, when unicorns might just be extinct and my prince lived two balconies down. As dainty as the collection is, don't be fooled, the product is of a high quality, and quite easy to apply. The blush and shadow compact offers an easy to blend range of muted pinks and purples, with two applicator choices. I was surprised that the product seemed to lift so easily from the pressed pad, yet stayed put so long on my face. There was no streaking or creasing throughout the day, as some cheaper brands tend to yield.

I am also not much for lipcolor, a concern when one is provided with one choice of shade within a brand; but was pleasantly surprised. Not only was the Lipcolor a bolder shade of pink (than the previous products), but the consistency was like silk. The color applied quite light on my lips, yet flawless, and offered a dramatic pop of color when combined with the softer pressed (face) colors. The result? A strikingly different look I find flirty, yet feminine enough to incite (innocent) romance this Valentine's Day!

Momma Told Me: Like a kid in a candy shop.

Ask anyone who knows me what my weakness is and they'll quickly proclaim; sugar. For me, my sweet tooth goes much further back than childhood candy bar fancies and Halloween plunder. In fact, sweets were what Momma and I shared most. Granted, half the time was spent at war with one another over who could tolerate the most Tearjerkers at once, or just how sour a Warhead could be before burning one's tongue. But we also shared a love for sweets of the chewy persuasion, such as gummis and taffy. I recall, once or twice a year, our family would make the trip past Santa's Village (a local seaside tourist trap), to quaint little Solvang. This, equally tourist driven, Dutch town had the most ornate curio shops, authentic German smorgasbords, and the freshest confectionery shops for miles. Very much, as I still do this day, I would squeal and run ahead, down cobblestone paths, towards the scent of fresh fudge here, and warm sugar cookies there.

At the very end of our trip, and I mean the very end (no sane parents would risk loading their child up with sugar at the beginning of such a journey), we would stop in at my favorite shop. This venue was located, downstairs, in a sort of basement, and filled wall to wall with single wrapped confections in authentic wine barrels. Candy at my (child) eye level, as far as I could see, and a round yellow basket in hand- my ticket to an unlimited shopping spree. My favorite, of course, were the 40+ flavors of fresh pulled taffy bites; labeled with colorfully hand drawn signs and equally fun spirals of flavor and color. Though taffy was, essentially, the same candy, I felt as though I'd hit the motherload when I was presented with such a wide range of options, each piece so soft and chewy, and vastly different. Inevitably, the ride home would consist of Momma and I swapping flavors, analyzing the texture and authenticity of each one, like harsh taffy critics.

When I discovered Mehlenbacher's Taffy it's no surprise these cherished childhood memories came flooding back. This (local to me) California based business specializes solely in preservative free, hand pulled taffy. Their current flavor catalog exceeds 50 selections spanning classic flavors such as Hot Cinnamon and Peanut Butter, to various collections like Cheesecake, Holiday, and Mixers. Seasonal flavors are constantly changing, and Mehlenbacher's is always looking for new suggestions from fans, as well as open to custom creating a taffy blend and label for special events! Their taffy will store up to 6 months from arrival, and can withstand refrigeration and freezing (simply allow the taffy to thaw prior to consumption). I should note, most importantly, that Mehlenbacher's is not a salt water taffy company, they believe in allowing the natural flavoring to shine through in their recipe.

Mehlenbacher's Taffy is made with an original 1900s recipe, and still hand processed (pulled) in small batches, with the traditional 'hook' method. This involves creating a base taffy and infusing flavor oils and color during a hand pull process. Afterwards the taffy is spread on a work surface to be rolled and cut (by hand), then wrapped and labeled. For this reason, each and every stick receives personal attention and the variety in detail only hand processed can allow. Currently Mehlenbacher's is sold nationwide (and even overseas) at various markets and retail locations, though all flavors may be ordered online at any time. The going rate for one (1.25oz) stick of Mehlenbacher's Taffy is $1.85, with boxes of 35+ offering a discounted $1.50/stick rate. Gift options such as sampler bags and boxes offer a fun way to share this authentic childhood treat as a gift or reward for friends and loved ones.

I received an 8 stick Sampler Bag of assorted Mehlenbacher's Taffy for review here on Momma Told Me. My taffy arrived in a gift ready, branded, box with vintage lettering and artwork. Inside were clear wrapped sticks of taffy approximately 5" in length and 1" in diameter. Each individual stick bore an easy read flavor identifying wrapper with weight and ingredients. My first experience was Orange Cream, with vibrant orange and whit swirls of color, and a creamsicle reminiscent scent. I was surprised just how soft and pliable the taffy was, though extremely chewy. Just a 1/6th bite was enough to keep my mouth occupied, and happy, for a while! I was also glad to note the flavor was less sweet, and more profiled, focusing on the Orange Cream, rather than a decadent sweet base. On this, and following sticks, I ate half in one serving and wrapped the rest up for later. My favorite? Dutch Apple Pie, as indulgent as it sounds, and impressively complex in flavor. With hints of cinnamon, and a creamy center ribbon (twisted throughout), this flavor was tart and sweet all at once. Truly the stuff my childhood memories are made of!

When we're young we aspire to be many things; doctors, ballerinas, even dinosaurs. We look at the world around us and think, 'Wouldn't it be fun just to be something different for one day?' We wonder how it feels to soar through the clouds, like a majestic eagle, or what a tiger thinks just before it leaps towards it's prey. We imagine swimming in the ocean alongside a family of dolphins, feeling the warm air against our face as we dance along the surface- or just how good that sweet spot feels when we scratch our pup's favorite spot. Animals have no laws, no curfews, no bills- just instinct, the instinct to do what each and every one of them are engineered best to do. Some are companions, others are hunters, and some simply coexist peacefully without mind or care of anything else around them.

I can think of few more romantic notions than that to sport the skin of your favorite animal and run free for a single day. What would you do with one day? So many of us 'adults' grow out of the childlike wonder that fosters this rebellious notion, as we fall further into the daily grind, and mountain of responsibilities, we seem to lose touch with what life's all about; living. Sometimes I work through days and nights, until I feel a great weight upon my chest. I'll glance out the nearby window, hearing the distant birds singing, and the warm sun, streaking through branches. It's so easy to forget what we do it all for, but so hard to remember! We work to pay the bills, to feed our families, to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe; that's the way of being human, right? But what is it, truly, all for if we never take the time to live? It's a new year, full of new hope, and new opportunities- take a moment to step away from the computer, away from life. Get out and dress up with the kids, take your sweetie on an impromptu road trip, try a new recipe- get messy.

It's no secret, to my loyal fan base, one of my favorite fashion accessories (and life tools), is SpiritHoods. Though it's natural to gravitate towards your favorite animal, I was surprised to find myself collecting the Husky and Leopard hoods, long before my trademark panda.

While you might love cuddly pandas, like me, the playful Kitty or even Skunk might speak to your inner animal 'spirit'. Each hood possesses defined traits for the animal it embodies, along with traits of those who would be attracted to it. Additionally, the brand's PRO BLUE initiative means 10% of all net profits, from items donning the PRO BLUE label, are donated directly to a non-profit organization benefiting the specific spirit animal! Most importantly, there are never any animals harmed to produce these stunning pieces of fashion! I have a collection of hoods, and I am constantly asked about their material base and origin. SpiritHoods are always cruelty free and made from synthetic materials, despite their impressively high quality. You may find felt based hoods at your local gas station for $20, but they don't hold a candle in comfort or durability to the original thing!

Your SpiritHoods will always arrive nestled neatly within tissue paper and with accompanying literature, ready to gift. Don't be mistaken by cheap knock offs, if it doesn't have the SpiritHoods fabric ear tag, it's not genuine! Attached to the ear, via tiny safety pin, is a fabric label and breakdown of animal traits. Made with 100% acrylic faux fur and a soft 50/50 Rayon/Linen lining, the original full length hoods are relaxed and beg to be touched. Inside the long flaps are stylish pockets, great for warming the hands or mock maulings (my personal preference). Between the two flaps, directly below the wearer's chin, is a brass or pewter toned knob for fastening the hood and styling. Occasionally I'll toss one flap over my shoulder, in shawl fashion, or criss-cross the arms, but I rather enjoy the haphazard appeal of the free moving 'arms'.

We received a Full Length Grizzly Bear (For Men) and a Full Length Panda Bear (For Women) for a photo shoot and feature during Bubbles of Love. I must say, of the Bear fashions, the brand's newest Brown Bear (Flannel), is actually my preferred. Just enough spirit, mixed with fashion, to work for your resident 'tough man'. I should also note that not all hoods are ProBlue, as, thankfully, not all the animals portrayed are in danger of extinction. My Panda Hood does, however, support the ProBlue efforts! My other half has been stealing my SpiritHoods for quite some time, despite a complaint about how 'girly' the Leopard and Husky seemed. When I asked him what might make the SpiritHoods more masculine, to him, he shared a desire for a shorter, half hood. While the half hoods have made appearances online at various times, we, Spirit Heads, will have to wait for the Spring Collection to get our hands on the newer versions.

Currently, we're still in the early, enough, stages of our relationship for an impromptu SpiritHood shoot to be a real treat. Much to our friends and family's, likely, dismay, we enjoyed frolicking in the local orchard and goofing off for an afternoon. One the hood goes on, it's hard to worry about deadlines or payments, or obligations. We're just two bears, in the wild, trying to figure out what all this 'fuss' is about. You already know I love my SpiritHoods, but it seems I've certainly converted another to the tribe! Still doe eyed enough to enjoy wearing matching outfits (yes, I just admitted that), I love to hear my Grizzly ask, "Can we wear our hoods today?" Talika Lipocils Expert is packaged in a small aqua box, with a vessel that resembles a common mascara tube. In fact, this white and chrome accented tube is dual ended, with one end housing the primary sponge applicator, and the opposite end a traditional brush. The solution, itself, is generally clear and does not act as an instant enhancement for color. An actual mascara should be applied post treatment, if desired, and the user should be sure to follow up their nightly makeup removal with another coat of Talika Lipocils Expert. The company warns of minor skin irritation, for some users, though the formula is natural based, and I never experienced any such sensations. As the solution dried on my lashes, I did notice a natural curling, and my mascara did tend to go on thicker. When I consider the overall price point of Talika Lipocils Expert, when recommending from a similar pool of past product experiences, I am most happy with the value for money here. Momma Told Me: If you can't open it, you shouldn't drink it.

When it comes to Valentine's Day, I commonly think roses, chocolates, and food; gourmet food, at lavish 5 course meals, followed by a glass of wine over a roaring fireplace (and maybe a sprawling fur rug, too much?). Unfortunately, corks are used with wine to additionally preserve freshness (or rather, age), and even as an adult I feel overwhelmed trying to uncork a bottle.

This item was a pleasant surprise to both my husband and me. We had been wondering; exactly what is was supposed to do? It looks like a "space-age" contraption that one might have seen used on Star Trek or something. Thankfully; it has a much better use.

Our first reactions were: where did the cork go? Initially; we'd thought that it had (accidentally) been pushed down into the bottle, itself. Then it dawned on us to look (inside of the Maestro Electric Wine Opener) Bingo, there it was! In order to eject the cork; you press the alternate button at the top of the Wine Opener and it slowly unscrews and places the cork, right into the palm of your hand. Now that's cool!

You simply use the foil cutter (one of my husband's favorite pieces) provided in the kit to remove the foil from the top of the bottle and expose the cork. Then you place the "charged" Maestro Electric Wine Opener onto the top of the bottle, lined up with the cork. It's as easy as just pressing a button and Magic! The cork has, skillfully, been removed from the bottle with little to no effort on your part.

Then we placed the unit's Infrared Wine Thermometer and Digital LCD Display to the test. We did as instructed and placed it near the wine in our glasses. To our amazement; the wine was within a couple of degrees of being "perfect to drink". Do these tumblers sound like an odd wine glass? As Momma will share, these glasses are weighted in the base, and prevent accidental toppling, or spills, commonly associated with entertaining. Not to mention how sturdy these are around pets and children!

These cute little tumblers are very sturdy and don't seem to be "top heavy" at all. The unique double-walled design reminds me of thermoses of my childhood days.

Since purchasing an apartment full of (real) solid wood furniture; we have been constantly battling with rings from sweating drinks on to table tops. What good is a beautiful solid wood dining room set, if you have to keep it covered all of the time; to protect it? That is where these glasses are the answer. I used them in several different locations, and on all different types of surfaces in this apartment. I tried a variety of hot beverages and ice-filled, cold drinks; placing them, every time directly onto my new furniture.

For the record; here in Ohio, it is very humid. Even with a dehumidifier on all of the time; the house still stays, barely manageable. The more humidity in the air; exponentially more "sweat" comes off of your cold drinks. It had gotten to the point; in this house, that we had decided to stop using ice altogether. The ice was just making the drinking glasses and containers a "drippy mess". We were, both, very impressed with these two little tumblers. Not only did they stay perfectly dry underneath, leaving absolutely no rings or evidence of any kind that they had been sitting for hours on the wood surfaces; but they kept the drinks perfectly cold. Nice idea and great product!

Momma Told Me: Once Blessed, Twice Cursed.

Some of the Momma regulars may find it odd that I have never actually reviewed lingerie on the blog. It's certainly not because I'm shy, or the topic makes me feel awkward; we've discussed everything from condoms and intimacy aids to shape wear and undergarments. And, while some may see 'lingerie' as a dirty word, the truth is most 'lingerie' has spilled over into sister categories such as sleep and lounge wear. The modern woman, coming in all shapes and sizes, and hailing from all careers and motivations, still very much desires to feel flirty and sexy- though their tastes may have evolved to that which seems more practical. For me, the simple truth has always been a lack of options. After a stint as a Victoria's Secret associate and Bra Expert (where I already felt ostracized with a DD cup, at 120lbs), I quickly became disenchanted with the concept of bedroom wear for fun.

My entire life I have battled with the necessary (particularly bras), let alone the extra frills and satin that were optional. My biggest challenges? Specific to me, the larger bust often equals a limited choice in styles and prints. Cute bras are for those C cup and under, no matter your waist size, you seem to be out of luck once you cross the 42 DD thresh-hold. More universal to being a woman in general, it's hard to feel and look sexy when you're not comfortable. When I did manage to find some (often over laced) creation I could fit in without spilling out, I was usually strapped and grommetted into a wire contraption I'd need the Jaws of Life to get out of. So, you can imagine, when I outgrew my 'teenage' body, settled into a sedentary job, and got married, those infamous lingerie stores became nothing more than a concept of torture. While I often passed by the windows, longing to feel as cute and flirty as the models showcased in them, I dared not waste another $100-$200 on an outfit I'd never wear.

No matter my size, I'm quite certain I'll never be one to gravitate towards the leather and chains, or see-through babydolls with leopard print lace. Those days, if there ever were any, have sailed, and lingerie (for me) needs to be equally functional as lounge and sleepwear. Let's just say I don't want to have to throw on jeans and a tshirt just to walk to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I need modest, but playful and comfy. After all, when I feel comfortable in clothing, I often feel sexiest- even if it's just a faded pair of jeans, or a well worn sweatshirt. I first learned of Rhonda Shear through her infamous spokeswoman job on HSN. After spending decades in the spotlight, as a late night TV personality, model, and actress, Rhonda decided to try her hand at design. Her first chore to tackle? Comfort.

Beginning with the worldwide best selling, and HSN top intimates, Ahh! Bra Collection, Rhonda designed a bra that promised to give every woman an 'Ahhhh!' moment. What on Earth is an 'Ahhhh' moment? That's often the feeling you get when you take your stuffy bra off, at the end of the day, right? Well, the Ahh! Bra is sold in sizing up to a diverse 4X, and helps provide needed support as well as comfort. The Classic Ahh! Bra features a V-Neck with Full Coverage, Extra Wide Non-Adjustable Straps, Front Ribbed Band and Support Ruching, and is entirely Hook and Wire Free. With a base retail price of just $19.95, it's hard to believe such a simple 'bra' could provide meaningful support and comfort to such a variety of sizes. You may recall I reviewed the Coobie, developed by a different company post Ahh! Bra, a one-size concept very similar to this. Do not get them confused, this is a size oriented, original concept.

I received an Original Ahh! Bra in size 2X for review here on Momma Told Me. The Ahh! Bra sizing is dependent upon cup size, primarily, and Rhonda Shear offers a comprehensive walk through for selection here. I should also note that there are various versions, since released, of the best selling Original Ahh! Bra, including one with removable pads (which I also received). There are over 40 colors and prints to choose from, expanding options and variety for women who wish to create an entire wardrobe of this versatile bra. The base material is an easily breathable, but not very modest (which is where I appreciate the optional pads), Nylon/Spandex compound. The bra itself reminds me of a lightweight sports bra, with an over the head, latch free, wear. In general, I experienced more support (lift) than I expected, though I would have preferred to go an additional size up. While the Ahh! Bra suited my needs wonderfully as a sleep and lounge bra, any collection of movements did result in the sneaking up of it's under band. In general, this is the best execution, for what it is, I've tried so far.

What I was most excited to receive, where 2 pieces from Rhonda shear's personally designed Intimates Collection. I was sent a Sweet Tease Molded Cup Gown, in Black, and matching Sweet Nothings Kimono in Pink. Both pieces are sold in sizing up to 4X, and accommodate chests, and women of all sizes, which I love. Many of Rhonda's designs are softer than your average lingerie collection, and enhance natural femininity without over exposing or intimidating the wearer. Her collections are constantly changing with the season, and popular prints/colors do sell out quickly! My items arrived classically wrapped in a golden hued gift box, nestled amongst tissue paper. My first impression of these two pieces was of their intensely soft texture, which mimicked silk. Both had fine lace lining and accents that were sexy, yet understated, and the material offered a flirty drape that accentuates assets, rather than suffocates the wearer.

I have to admit, even when I was near 60lbs lighter, never have I ever felt as comfortably confident and sexy, as in my Rhonda Sheer Intimates. I love that the Kimono Robe is long enough to be decent in the hallways, yet casually flirty enough to hint at whats beneath, if desired. The Sweet Tease Molded Cup Gown offers adjustable support that is natural, with coverage and lift that makes me feel beautiful for who I am. Where as some baby doll styles push the breasts up to one's chin, this piece offers adequate lift (and stay put stability), that makes me want to continue wearing the piece all night. Now that's rare for lingerie!

To begin, I should state I am not, personally, a big fan of cake. In the name of disclosure I should note that I am one of the very first to receive this top secret, new CPC Creation. Many cake pops will often crumble if they are not eaten in one bite. These were moist and featured a light shell that enhanced the cake's flavor (as a good frosting was originally intended to do). In addition, they were easy to eat, for a clean treat to snack on, or wonderful entertaining accent. Perhaps the most unique aspect of this creation (shown above) were the CRUNCHLE football pops. Exclusive to CPC, these CRUNCHLE pops are essentially a double thick walled, football shaped pop with rice crunchy texture, that breaks way for an extra moist chocolate center. Even at room temperature, these made a delightful 'popping' sound as I bit into them, and were quite the treat in themselves! (We're the mother/daughter duo who email to say 'Happy you made it another year', rather than exchange extravagant gifts and sentiment) My point? The FERRO timepiece I received arrived packaged in a gift worthy, recycled material base, cover box. The watch itself was wrapped loosely around a velvet pillow, and an included insert outlined the eco significance and inspiration behind this timepiece. The extra wide band, and stylistically large notches enhanced the bold and modern concept of the FERRO, while the intricate detail of stitchwork and minimalistic (4 Dot Indicator) Face helped bring a touch of femininity. In general this watch reminds me of an exotic island chain, with fresh Spring colors and a flirty wooden clasp. The thick leather band tends to be stiff at first, and can wear a little more like a bangle, but I suspect the leather will soften more comfortably with age.

Many February ads would have you think Diamonds are a girl's best friend. I would beg to differ. When it comes to romantic gifting I prefer a thoughtful gift that is as unique, and beautiful as myself. When it came time to line up this year's Bubbles of Love selections I instantly knew the company I wanted to reach out to. Bake Me A Wish! just so happened to have a festive selection of our favorite type of cake; Red Velevet. The company has a whole section featuring mouth watering, moist and fluffy, specialty cakes for Valentine's Day and the upcoming holidays, and mine featured a special White Chocolate 'Love' edible heart disc in the center. The 7 inch round Red Velvet Chocolate Cake feeds 6-8, and is decorated with pure Cream Cheese Frosting, housing two layers of moist Red Velvet Chocolate Cake with White Chocolate shaving dusted sides.

I received my Bake Me A Wish! cake on the scheduled day, packaged securely with a shipping ring, and nestled against an ice pack. The cake was cool to the touch, and visibly in tact, as pictured online when ordering. I was impressed with how moist the actual cake was and after cutting a small wedge, (near 1/10th of the cake). I was also surprised to realize the cream cheese frosting more so complimented the Red Velvet flavor, than overpower it. I especially loved that the red velvet flavor was not too decadent to enjoy after a full meal, and the abundant white chocolate shavings added to the creamy frosting texture. We're certainly hardcore Red Velvet fans in this household, but I must admit, Bake Me A Wish! ranks up there with our new favorites!

Bubbles of Love: Professing my Affection for this Mikasa “Love Story” Dinnerware...$288 Giveaway~ 2/4

I have been coveting this beautiful, Porcelain Dinnerware Set by Mikasa for quite some time. This set really “speaks to me”. It just oozes “Romance”. Even though I have been married to the “Love of my Life” for almost (10) years now; there is always room for a little more romance. I’m not just speaking of those once in the while occasions when everyone feels compelled to acknowledge their love and affection for one another. I am talking about (day-to-day) reminders. In my opinion; there is nothing as sophisticated and elegant as these charismatic, yet whimsical hearts scrolled onto this white porcelain Dinnerware set. The loopy heart design, is placed with purpose (although it looks random in nature) across the “Love Story” 5-Piece Place Settings from Mikasa. I must admit; I have always been a Mikasa Fan. In fact; I have been purchasing their product line for many years, as gifts for all occasions. Yes; I have excellent taste in gifts, as well as, a lot of happy gift recipients.

This particular set is very popular among Brides-to-Be and it is often included in their Bridal Registries; for good reason. The quality is exactly what one would expect from the Mikasa Branding. The sparkling platinum rim that encircles this set defines the edge without being overpowering. The more I look at this set; the more I just love it! Of course; I already know about the quality and consistency that Mikasa offers so I could be influenced, a little, by that.

This Dinnerware set is hand washable; which is exactly how you should treat your finer sets. I would never recommend putting porcelain into a dishwasher. You would just be risking losing something that (I know) you will cherish. As I have always said; “If it is worth spending the money to purchase a beautiful set of dishes; it is equally worth taking the time to wash them by hand”. I do own a dishwasher; but I will never place this set into it. I just couldn’t stand the thought of something happening to any part of this amazing Mikasa Dinnerware Set. I’ll treat them with respect and give them the appropriate care, and they in turn will provide many years of day-to-day enjoyment and a touch of romance to our meals.

Momma Told Me: Keep your feet covered or you'll catch your death!

Ask anyone who works in an office space to list their biggest pet peeves and you're sure to hear about 'climate control'. In any work environment where employees are expected to share a small space for long periods of time the issue of temperature comfort is bound to arise. After all, while we are all warm blooded creatures, internal thermostats vary by age, gender, and general personal preference. The biggest key to a happy workplace and high productivity? Comfort. Even though I've long left the cubicle world, I am as picky as ever when it comes to my personal work space and extended comfort. Working out of my own home office, attached to a desk and/or computer for up to 12 hours a day, it can seem silly to regulate an entire house for the comfort of one individual. Of course I have a favorite seat, and favorite laptop lap 'desk' (I'm not ashamed to identify as a panda pillow pet), but I often find my mind begins to wander when my body has concern for complaint. The biggest threat to my personal productivity? The temperature.

I'm fortunate enough to live in sunny Southern California, where we gripe when the late night temperatures dip below 50, and the harshest Winter weather is often an afternoon downpour leading to brilliantly clear skies. But I've also lived, and worked, in Rhode Island, mid December when the snow fell so thick we were (at times) trapped in the office, literally. I've also come to realize that simply because 'us' So Cal residents don't typically endure 'harsh' Winter weather doesn't mean we are immune to the typical gripes other US residents have. If anything we complain MORE at the inconvenience of an especially cold day, and call out of work when our windshields overly frost. Yes, we can appreciate the comforts of luxury office products and fine tuned climate control too.

Personally, I am anti-socks; and have proudly been so since the third grade (yes, that specific, and an incident for another article). In fact, just a few weeks back I was caught setting up at a local swap meet, 4AM, 42F with a 10F windchill, on the beach, in flip flops. I was freezing my paws off, and secretly promising to never go sock-less again. Around the house I will often resort to bulky slippers, or even wrapping my feet in blankets to keep warm while working. After all one of the most important regions to maintain body temperature are the soles of our feet, the key to long term comfort. Similarly, is the importance of proper posture, while remaining seated for periods of time. For this reason, I've often considered shopping an at desk footrest; but found the average prices a bit absurd for a simple angled scrap of plastic. When I invest in something, like most of the NOW generation, I expect it to serve multiple purposes for the money I put out.

Retailing for $89.99 (listed at PennyWise for $74.99), the Climate Control Footrest offers 3 levels of automated comfort, as well as an angled, texture, massage design.

I received a Fellowes Climate Control Heated Footrest for review here on Momma Told Me, and was immediately impressed with how lightweight the unit was. Made from an easy to clean, yet durable, plastic, the footrest measured 16.5" x 10", and sat about 5.5" off the ground with feet in. On the bottom of the unit were 4 'flip up' feet, with rubber grips, for extra height, or fold away storage. I did note, during use, if I bumped the feet (while arranging) they tended to want to snap back in. This was a minor inconvenience and not an issue during extended operation. The footrest itself is naturally angled, at a set angle, for ergonomic use, and the wide top surface is covered in comforting surface massage bumps. Note this unit does not vibrate or massage, though the sensation of rubbing ones soles along the varied surface does help me relieve stress when my mind seems overly blocked. The front two feet can be folded in for an extended angle of use.

Operation of the Fellowes Climate Control Footrest is quite easy, with a standard AC plug, and on/off switch. The unit features 3 modes of operation; Cool Fan, Low Heat, and High Heat, which enable the footrest to double as a climate control device year round (not just as a heater in the Winter). Even on High Heat the footrest is surprisingly quiet, perhaps my favorite feature, and comparable to an ambient fan. The device did generate an odor, similar to an overheated hair dryer during it's initial use, the smell was not overwhelming, but noticeable, and faded after initial use. Another important feature, for those who intend to use the product at home, or who are subject to intermittent narcolepsy under extreme comfort, is the automatic 8 hour shut off. The Fellowes Climate Control Heated Footrest will automatically shut off after 8 hours of continuous use to prevent over heating.

How does the actual heating element stack up? Thanks to the cooling fan and heating functions I can still enjoy this footrest barefoot, if desired (and personally prefer to do so). In areas where it is especially cold, socks, and even shoes, may be worn atop the footrest. The pad is wide enough to circulate treated air around the user's feet, and even up from under the desk, for total comfort. High Heat seems to be more than needed in my personal office, while I can comfortable leave Low Heat on for the perfect regulation all morning. The manufacturer suggests keeping the airways free from obstruction (no blankets or covers while in use), though the cat might be tempted to steal my new 'toy', or at least share in the toasty bubble of warmth radiating from it!

In all, I was a bit sad to see a product priced within the luxury range, made from plastic, but have outweighed this con with its versatility and convenient lightweight build (which makes it easy to tote from room to room or pack away). The noise level is whisper quiet, and even soothing, and the extra added 'massage nubs' increase airflow and soothe tired feet. The fact that this Climate Controlled Footrest can achieve so many desired uses definitely make it work owning!

As an adult, gone are the days of Flinstones chewables and bubblegum vitamins- okay, so I confess I still take them sometimes for the novelty and convenience. I can't believe I just admitted I have a bottle of Popeye vitamins on my nightstand! These days there are a plethora of forms for youth vitamin intake, including my personal favorite- gummies. But I've known too many people who've given themselves an awful stomach ache after eating half a bottle, like pieces of candy! But I digress- there has to be a more practical, mature way for busy adults to get, and be motivated to take, their necessary vitamins.

Of course there is a feasible solution, and it comes in the form of a brand called Vitalicious. Don't let the name fool you, it's Vital-icious, not Vita-licious. They refer to themselves as the 'market leader of vital and delicious baked goods'. So what exactly is a 'vital' baked good? The thought originally evoked images of boring bran muffins and wheat-grass infused cookies. But a company with such a fun name promises to deliver the 'goods', being tasty cookies, cakes, and muffins, while maintaining the nutritional integrity most modern adults lack. All of their products guarantee 100 calories per 2oz portion/serving size, an amazing tidbit considering the average 100 calorie snack portion is half that size.

Their low fat recipes and formulas ensure high fiber content which encourages that important 'full' feeling when dieting or snacking between meals. Most of their products are also low sodium, high in protein, and trans-fat free, making them versatile for any dietary needs. And I can't leave out the up to 15 necessary vitamins and minerals you'll find in these tasty snacks! Ideally, Vitalicious baked goods are meant to fill in the holes left by poor diet structure and busy schedules. Just browsing Vitalicious' 15 flavors of muffins, cakes, brownies and more made my mouth water. Fudgy Peanut Butter, Apple Berry, Golden Corn, and Banana Nut are just some of the classic and comforting selections you'll find. I love that their muffins and muffin tops are sensible in size, yet do not compensate for the low caloric value with tiny portions. In addition, there are no preservatives in these fresh baked goods, which is excellent for health!

I was excited to receive a box of Vitalicious products for sample and review here on Momma Told Me, last summer. The box arrived with explicit instructions to place the product in the freezer upon arrival (despite arriving thawed, and ready to eat, insulated by ice). While Vitalicious baked goods can be refrigerated, they will last 1/3 as long as frozen, and lose freshness due to the lack of harmful preservatives. I thought it was a great idea to freeze the product and was especially excited to read that these crave-able treats can last up to 9 months in the freezer! When I was ready to sample my first Vitalicious treat I simply pulled it out to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Vitalicious snacks come individually wrapped, and can also be microwaved, or popped in a toaster!

For dinner the next day I pulled out a Golden Corn VitaTop and slid it in the toaster for a quick heating and slight toast. The result was a golden , crumbly, slightly sweet baked snack that added some extra nutrition to my meal, and disappeared within seconds! But it was the brand's signature VitaBrownies that truly won my heart. I was immediately pleased with the portion size, right out of the box. However, I couldn't begin to imagine how an additive free, vitamin filled, whole wheat and organic based brownie could possibly satisfy a chocolate craving. After my initial first bite, I never questioned Vitalicious again. The brownie itself was perfectly moist and fluffy, with crunchy walnuts and a smooth cocoa taste that did not incite the need to guzzle a glass of milk. In a sense it tasted 'healthy' due to the lack of pure sugar taste, but by no means did this brownie disappoint in flavor or name.

Recently the company announced the newest rollout to their collection, a one of a kind in it's league (individual wrapped snacking); 50 calorie Fudgy Chocolate Mini VitaCakes. It sounds like a mouthful (and fudgy alongside chocolate is redundant), but these 3-4 bite mini cakes are just the trick to tackling tough cravings come mid afternoon. They even make the perfect late night indulgence, with 2g of protein, 6g of fiber, 14g of carbs, 15 vitamins and minerals, and just 1g of fat- not to mention their always all natural mantra! Did you know it takes just 7 minutes to 'walk off' these divine puppies?! I had the fortunate chance to sample Vitalicious' new Mini VitaCakes and received a wonderfully convenient snack pack holder. Inside the snap shut holder were two individually wrapped Mini VitaCakes, about 4" in length and 1.5" in width. Out of the wrapper I could feel the moist textured cake, and see 2-3 whole chocolate flavored chips. My teeth sunk into the fluffy, yet dense, cake and a smile spread as I quickly caught a chip for texture. The flavor reminds me of chocolate malt o meal, or powdered chocolate milk; mild yet rich in cocoa flavor (not too sweet). These have certainly become my newest diet wingman!

Everyone needs, at least, one Vacuum. That’s a given. Here is the thing that I find irritating….. I hate to pull out my big, full-sized (18.5 lb.) vacuum; just to clean up a little mess. It’s cumbersome and a pain in the (well you know where). Maybe I’m just a little lazier in my older age; or just getting smarter. I don’t know which; but I like to the think the latter. I have taken to sweeping up the hardwood floors in my apartment with an old-fashioned broom. Would you believe that I find this too much effort to exert? Well; it’s true. I hate sweeping and trying to get all of the dust and crumbs into a scoop. You know; it never really gets all of it. There is always some residue left when you’re done.

I was so happy when the representative for Rowenta USA contacted me and offered to work with me on a Review and Giveaway for their Rowenta Delta Force Rechargeable Stick Vacuum. This amazing, yet very elegant looking stick vacuum has all of the cleaning power of those really expensive “cyclonic” vacuums. It is a very light-weight, cordless, easy-to-use hand unit. It is slender enough to fit almost anywhere that you would want to store it. This would be a perfect vacuum for someone that owns a motor home (like I did for the past 5 years). It would fit right under the bed or under the couch in most RVs. Of course; when I was looking for a powerful and compact vacuum, I never ran across this one.

This Rowenta Rechargeable Stick Vacuum has a lot of suction for such a little footprint. Yes; this baby “sucks” literally and in a positive manner. It will last on a single charge for about 40 minutes; which should get you through several quick clean ups or one relatively long cleaning spree. I tested it out on my hardwood floors, under the cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom and checked to see if it would fit under all of my furniture. To my amazement, it did!

It cleans in the corners and gets all of those little crumbs out of the places that my broom couldn’t. That was the downside to this review; this vacuum found crumbs that I couldn’t see and didn’t know were there. I’m a clean-freak; so that was quite disturbing. But; as far as the Rowenta Stick Vacuum went; it did exactly as it should have done and found every one of those little crumbs, a few popcorn kernels under my couch (at least that area was almost as clean as I had hoped), and a dust ball here and there. So; I didn’t pass the “white glove test” but I would have gotten an easy B+.

The Rowenta Rechargeable Stick Vacuum only weighs in at 8lbs. Its Triangular Swivel Head is what makes it get into those corners, so well. The low profile of the head, allows it to get under the lowest of my furniture without scratching my expensive wood armoires and chests. It comes with a 6ft Charging Cord and is 120V. In a nutshell; I LOVE this little Stick Vacuum. Not only is it sexy and sleek (like I was in my younger days) but it really does deliver, hassle free cleaning. The bagless feature is the only way to go, in my opinion. The filters are easy to clean and wash. All of this means that; you don’t have additional expenses for filters and bags.

When the Vacuum arrived on my doorstep; it was all packed well and in a nice box. It, literally, only took me a couple of minutes to put it together. I’m so proud that I didn’t even need to open the instructions for that part. I plugged it in overnight for the initial charge, and the next morning, I was one happy ex-camper; playing (vacuuming) everywhere that I could. I don’t dread my quick cleanups anymore. Actually; I kind of like to just pull it out of my closet (where I keep it plugged in and ready to go) and tidy up.

The fact that it is 47 inches tall means that I don’t have to stoop down to use it. That is a real plus for my aching back. It rolls effortlessly on my floors and I am told that it will also vacuum low-pile carpets. I could not test that part out; because my carpeting is too tall. I did run it over my indoor/outdoor carpet mats by the front door and it seemed to perform, equally as well, on them. As far as I am concerned; the Rowenta Delta Force Rechargeable Stick Vacuum really did deliver on all points. It’s in the mid-range (price wise) at $179.00. But; in my opinion, it is well worth the investment. You could spend a heck of a lot more; but why would you, if you can get what you want in this one? On the other hand; you could just go out and buy another cheap one. But; don’t come crying to me when you find out that you, really do, get what you pay for.

I learned to respect that which I could not see from an early age. The concept of clean air was no stranger, and I spent the entirety of my childhood shuffled out of one air hazard or another. Yes, my lungs were spoiled so to speak, and I continue to deal with the peculiarities and benefits of it to this day.

I've often had (friendly) arguments with many friends and family in regards to the definition of clean air. Living just outside of Los Angeles, it doesn't take a scientist to scan a cityscape and see the air is infested with smog; but not all air pollutants are as forbiddingly apparent. For many who suffer from pollen and dander allergies, the clearest of atmospheres can pose hazardous threats. Think I sound a little apocalyptic? Consider the (over) 8.7 known species of microorganisms capable of airborne transmission, then take a gulp at the knowledge that scientists predict this is less than 10% of the actual species in existence! Of course there's no need to wrap your world in Seran Wrap and call yourself Bubble Boy; humans have been coexisting with these particles and organisms for centuries. But one thing is for sure, whether you're an asthmatic, or born with an immune system of steel, nothing feels quite like a breath of fresh air.

About 2 years back I developed a very nasty, and persistent, cough. Those in passing, who didn't know me, would refer to it as a 'smoker's cough'. Naturally I've never touched a cigarette in my life; and, while the doctors put me through a barrage of TB, Pneumonia, and Viral tests, I had no prior illness to account for it. Other than a constant post nasal drip, at night, I had a healthy respiratory system. Month after month it progressed, until a simple bout of laughter would produce coughing fits bad enough to close my airways and have me gasping for air (no fun!) At this time, I began to log my episodes, and started shopping air purifiers. All of this coughing was cutting dramatically into the quality of my sleep, and my home quickly began to feel like a war zone for my lungs! I needed something affordable and portable I could rely on when traveling, sleeping, or simply socializing around friends.

I was sent a Black CleanAirBall personal purifier for review here on Momma Told Me. The parcel that arrived was incredibly intuitive and minimalistic. Inside the box was a thin tri-fold instruction pamplet, USB to AC (2PC) charging adapter, 2 PC AirBall unit, and Single Filter. Assembly was quick, removing the surrounding bags and packaging, and plugging the USB power cord into the back of the unit.

The CleanAirBall personal purifier is impressively lightweight, yet sleek and sturdy. It's chic round design makes for an intriguing piece of home decor, while the footed base add stability on any surface. The replaceable filter sits snuggly inside the bottom of the Ball, and the top half latches into place with a rounded male/female pairing. Weighing less than 2lbs, and just over 7' in diameter, this small purifier packs an impressive treatment window of up to 45 SQ FT. The CleanAirBall uses a patented HEPA filtration system, with (white noise comparable) quiet motor and optional blue ambient lighting. I love that this unit requires no tools to set up or maintain, and has a single button operation. It's also Blue Star certified as energy efficient!

The purifier functions through a unique design that enables the Ball to draw air from bottom located vents, and pull the flow through a cylindrical filter. The small, central located, fan moves the filtered air up and through the vented gap at the top. Note, though the CleanAirBall has blue lighting, it is in no way UV related, and purely for ambiance as a night light or piece of decor. To operate the CleanAirBall simply press the (back located) power button once. To disarm the blue lighting, press the power button once more, and a third time to turn the device off entirely. For it's $39.95 retail value, there is one feature I'd love to see incorporated into it's design; a sleep timer. The unit will not turn off on it's own, and will run all night from a bedstand, or otherwise, if left on. Thankfully it's energy efficient, but a sleep program would enable an extension on the life of the filter.

Now, an air purifier has always been one of those 'sounds nice, but how do I know its working' type things, to me. And, while the CleanAirBall claims to have an impact up to 45 SQ FT away, I prefer to keep mine within 5-10 ft, when in use. It's so light and easy to relocate, and convenient with a USB power option, I can literally move the Ball with my laptop from room to room! That being said, I have noticed a significant difference in treated, vs non treated atmosphere and breathing. My coughing and nasal issues are markedly cut with Blueair's CleanAirBall, and I especially enjoy (and this may sound crazy) the way the air almost feels thinner to breathe. The life of it's filter truly will depend on frequency of use, and atmosphere of use. While mine shows visible signs of function (discoloration from collection of particles), it is still going strong after 2 months.

Momma Told Me: That's not a chew toy!

I love my pets, that goes without saying for just about any pet owner; they're a part of the family. Of course, much like children, many pets require supervision, and extra consideration when planning their environment. And while we can certainly place a lot of blame on 'puppy stages, my (almost) 2 year old cat often stirs up more mischief than any young pup I've owned. Every animal is unique in their personality, and each requires an individual approach to play time. While some may be chewers or tearers, others may prefer active play and sound interaction. Your best friend, whether feline or canine, didn't come from a plastic mold in a factory, so why should their toys? Your pet deserves the variety, and quality, of a toy made unique for them!

While I have a few favorite brands for so called 'indestructible' toys, you'll often find me surfing Etsy, or local craft fairs for handmade cat nip baubles, or chew toys. It will come as no surprise that I'm far from mainstream, with my vintage take and retro tastes, I display tastes that border kitschy. When I shop for cat toys, or pet lover gifts, I look for one of a kind pieces that best exemplify owner and pet. Anyone can toss a few fake fur mice (you know the ones) on the floor; but isn't it so much cooler to find a tiny eggplant or mushroom? And, believe it or not, studies have shown that bright colors and patterns (rather than life like toys) engage animals and encourage mental clarity in pets.

Recently I stumbled across Wags and Wiggles, Etsy based handmade pet shop, and instantly fell in love. I'd first landed on their Pink Flamingo Dog Toy, and decided I had to become a customer (if even as a gift for a friend). When I realized their original toy designs crossed over into Organic Cat Nip Toys, I was in heaven. With the exception of a few items, most listed styles are made to order, and all are triple stitched for durability, from high quality and thick fabrics. Dog toys range from stuffing free to squeaker enhanced, and the widely popular 'water bottle' filler line. In addition, each toy is entirely machine washable, so you never have to worry about your pooch dragging a ruined toy in from the yard.

While Wags and Wiggles has yet to add a Panda to their lineup for colorful characters and creations, they do have a cat and dog toy in the next best black and white animal; the penguin. We received a penguin organic cat nip toy and Dog Toy Penguin (Recycled Water Bottle Toy) for review here on Momma Told Me. Both toys came neatly wrapped in vibrant tissue paper, inside a decorated (padded) envelope. Each toy had a sewn in canvas tag, bearing the Wags and Wiggles logo, and included a basic care instruction card. Truffles, resident cat and approved feline tester for Momma Told Me, is quite picky with her toys. In fact, rarely will she actually play with anything I've purchased for her (making it especially important I appreciate the style of said toy, as it will frequently lay on our floor for days).

When I pulled out the 2' penguin, made from durable decorator fabric, with multiple prints and textures, I noted it was stuffed with organic catnip. The penguin offered a pleasant crackle when I squeezed it. Truffles, whose primary favorite toy consists of plastic springs, rarely takes to catnip, and prefers stuffed 'toys' I purchase or own for my own decor. I made a little game of pretending the toy was 'not for her', and was sure to move it away each time she'd inch closer, until the curiosity of this forbidden item had got the best of her. With a pounce, she snatched it from the bed beside me, and proceeded to squint through inhales of catnip. Before long she was hugging the penguin to her face as she furiously rubbed/nuzzled it with her whiskers and rolled along the bed like a mad cat. That first night she played with her penguin for near an hour, ultimately breaking out into a game of fetch, yes fetch, and pulling the penguin out nightly since. It has become her favorite, non spring, toy.

The dog toy we received was equally non conventional. I'd never quite heard of using recycled water bottles for chew play before, until a friend of mine with a teething puppy confessed their pup's secret addiction to them. As it turns out, recycled water bottles are relatively safe, and durable, chew toys many dogs enjoy for the long lived 'crackle' sound effects they provide. Wags and Wiggles customer request, a water bottle dog toy, centers around a fabric sleeve of sorts to safely (and decoratively) hide these discarded chew bottles. The bottom of our penguin toy features an elastic opening that accommodates standard 20oz bottles for easy swapping and cleaning. Best of all, there's never any messy polyfill stuffing to tear out, or hazardous squeakers.

Kyra loves to take her water bottle penguin outside, and roll in the mud- we don't mind, because the bottle cover slips right off for gentle machine washing! She loved the textured penguin belly, and triple stitched, clever, character features. I love that it's incredibly lightweight, and offers hours of muffled, yet noisy, chewing. Wags and Wiggles offers incredibly reasonable prices for the ingenuity and originality they offer, not to mention incredibly durable toys for your pampered pet!

Momma Told Me: A purse on the floor is money out the door!

If you're like me, your purse is the center of your social, business, and family life. At any given moment that mystical bag can hold anything from precious funds keys to Midol and teething rings, and everything in between. I know my last, personal, purse inventory included hundreds of dollars in partially used gift cards (irreplaceable), a current stash of bills and identity revealing receipts, emergency cosmetics kit, inhaler, clear nail polish, garment tape, a loose Lifesaver, and the icon of all social contact (of which all safety and social means would come to a screeching halt if lost)- my cell phone. My point? Your purse is much more than a chic expression of your current fashion, or a heart attack to be had by your husband (men just don't get designer, do they?), its a vital tool for everyday living.

Whether you shell out $400 or $40 for that perfect purse, no woman wants to toss that which spends half it's life on their arm, onto a questionably sticky floor. Furthermore, placing said purse somewhere entirely out of sight, and mind, poses a risk for theft and even worse- the clumsy fault of a scattered mind. I cannot begin to recount the number of times I have simply walked out of an establishment or eatery without my purse! It's gotten bad enough that I once tried to outsmart myself (by leaving my purse in the car, and grabbing only my wallet), and ended up driving off with the entire contents of my wallet sliding down the windshield in front of me. But let's face it, a bicycle lock isn't exactly sexy; I don't want to have to tether my purse to my body or a chair just to keep it safe and clean! This is exactly where Luxe Link comes in.

Purse hooks have been around for years. In honesty, I've received at least a half dozen for gifts, since becoming an adult, alone. My absolute favorite thing about Luxe Link is, actually, the ever growing range of designer and trademark styles. From various artistic prints to the recently released Hello Kitty collection, and real Swarovski Crystal embellishments, there is a Luxe Link purse hanger for everyone. I absolutely love companies that pick a specific (item) focus, and expand with licensed partnerships, or an increased inventory, to encourage expression and collecting. I could see myself with many Luxe Links, and proudly showing them off on my actual purse!

The Luxe Link purse hanger is extremely easy to operate. Simply pull out the coil and turn the round (center) disk so that the black bottom is facing your table or surface. Place the round disk parallel with your desired surface and hang your handbag from the dangling hook. I've noticed this works wonderful on counters (such as bartops or nooks), though the user should always take into consideration the sturdiness of any table before hanging. While the purse hook works wonderful, the table may not encourage up to 15lbs of weight hanging from it's edge! My Luxe Link has had no issues holding my (16lb) purse, but remember the manufacturer does not intend or advise for them to hold purses exceeding 15. I love that my purse is not only on display (if desired), but off the floor, when dining out (and even visiting at friend's homes). Momma Told Me: When there's so much to love, sometimes you just need a little extra support.

As a busty woman, myself, (inheriting Momma's genes of course), I certainly can understand the necessity for a little extra reinforcement here and there. And while 'shapewear' has become my favorite accessory, I hardly think of Spanx when perusing Italian Vogue. Ironically, though, control geared garments are modeled on chiseled idealistic men, very much like their female counterparts. I suppose some things will never change....But for the brand Equmen, pioneering 'Equality For Men', having a tight and trimmed body seems worth the extra effort of deception. Can you imagine a man in our grandparent's days discussing the type of girdle he wears?! But place a few Italian models and well placed celebrities in chic colors and garments similar to wife beaters- well, you have a worldwide phenomenon on your hands overnight!

Don't let my biting cynicism detour you though (after all, I am Momma's daughter), the real applications of shape-wear for men far exceed vanity and athletic benefit. I just hope the women (and men) shopping for Equmen don't see the GQ worthy ads and anticipate an overwhelming James Gandolfini to Raoul Bova transformation. As women know being bless with awesome abs, and such impeccable external structure is just that- a blessing, or through years of hard work and commitment to diet and exercise. When I first addressed this concept to a girlfriend of mine her initial response was "That's cheating! I don't want to take him home and find out his six pack's a keg!" Before I could begin to tell her what was wrong with her statement, I had a moment of reflection. That must be precisely how men feel with all of the tape, lifts, slips, and inflatable push ups women wear these days. And in truth, while dating, I did feel a little like a secret agent 'strapping everything in' and hobbling around in 5 inch heels like a pony on parade.

We were sent an Equmen Undershirt, Boxer Briefs, and Compression Socks for review here on Momma Told Me. While most women consider their husband attractive, the men in our lives sometimes lack the confidence necessary to portray these assets, knowing they do not resemble Brad Pitt or Brock Lesnar in build. In any case, I should note that I did beg and plead for photos, but my test subject was unwilling to provide a 'before', though thrilled with the after. Made from a soft, and remarkably breathable, Polyester/Nylon/Spandex blend, the husband was doubtful this casing of a shirt would ever fit him. Like putting tights on a Pixi Stick'd 4 year old, I fought with him as I wriggled the shirt over his head and aligned the Helix Core with his features. Immediately I could sense a change in his posture, as this 6'1" man now towered over me!

The front seemed less dramatic in compression (girth wise) as the effects along his shoulders and back were magnified most. I highly suspect this varies by figure from man to man (with the moat dramatic results appearing around softer features). While the design served to smooth, as intended, our tester has a donut loving gut (that's much adored), and is not an Italian model. Don't expect Equmen to give any man a 6 Pack, it strengthens and tones, as promised- it's not magic! After whining for a moment about how tight the Core Precision Undershirt was, quickly fell in love with the way he felt while wearing it, and in the coming weeks came to parade around the house in it alone (instead of as an undershirt). He also claims his legs don't seem as tired, or 'tingle' as much as they used to, something I attribute to the combined use with his Equmen briefs and improved circulation as a whole. In all, we've loved trying out the line. I think the stylish design is modern and chic, without intimidating men as 'shape-wear'.

Momma Told Me: There's no such thing as a good secret!

Do you remember how important it was, as a child, to have your own 'secrets'? It seemed the ages 5-10 were especially important for me to assert my new found independence from the local authorities (mom and dad), and astound even myself with the ingenuity of covert affairs. Around 8 I became obsessed with spy lore, tricks, and gadgets. Even though Momma had been there when we bought the magical pen, I was certain it's ordinary appearance had fooled her, and my secret was safe. Then there was the time I stumbled across her hidden Christmas gift stash, and considered myself coy enough to tuck away offending items behind the pile. By the time Christmas rolled around, I had 'hidden' so much evidence (of my evil doings) in that closet Santa threatened to skip our house all together!

From secret languages like Pig Latin, to invisible friends and loose floorboards, children will always have the need to outwit those which rule them. It's not about reckless misadventure, or spoiled defiance, it's about the peace of mind that some childlike wonders still remain exclusive to them. That, while little Billy may aspire to throw a curve ball just like pop, and Susie to one day be as beautiful as her older sister, they are still their own individuals, with their own unique space. Momma, personally, was never a fan of hiding spots. Sometimes I'd feel as though I had to go to extremes for a tiny bit of privacy (not that I knew what to do with it when I found some, but the knowledge I could was worth volumes). In my opinion providing your child with a structured sense of privacy fosters responsibility and respect as an individual. And those who love to snoop (like Momma), will at least know where to look!

One of the latest As Seen On TV crazes, the Secret Pocket Pillow, can be a great tool for child development, as well as a wonderfully practical piece of decor. Made from ultra soft, easy to clean, vibrant stitch work and fleece, the Secret Pocket Pillow is an (approx) 1' squared fleece pillow with iconic childhood symbol (flowers, butterflies, race cars, and rockets) on one side, and a coy lengthwise zipper on the other. It's rather ingenious really, as most throw pillows have seam zippers ordinarily, and (to a kid) this is just another pillow. Generating the same excitement as a loose floorboard, the back zipper opens to reveal a sizable pocket which runs the depth of the pillow. This pocket is essentially am external layer of fleece sewn onto the back of the pillow (so objects could be felt through the pocket if needed), but secretive enough for any child.

We received a sample of Secret Pocket Pillows for review here on Momma Told Me and I was immediately surprised with the amount of detail put into the front graphics. Our Bella Butterfly pillow was much prettier than any online image, as the extra thick embroidered stitching offers a wonderful sheen and textile element that really made the pillow pop as a piece of decor. The entire line of 2 boy and 2 girl designs is geared to coordinate together or alone with core childhood interests and decorating themes. Pair the butterfly and flowers together for a lovely bed set, or gift one a piece to girly sisters. The size is just perfect enough for our 9 year old to crash on, or the 5 year old to cuddle. I love that that are square for space saving, and convenient enough for them to carry.

The Secret Pocket Pillow arrives with an easy tear tag, and a sewn in (lengthy) care instruction label. Be sure to remove tags before gifting them to the little ones! The zipper, in my opinion, would benefit from being a little more flat, and wide, for gripping by smaller hands. The current pull is manageable, but frustrated our younger girl. Once open, the super soft pocket is perfect to hold even delicate items and toys. We fit several standard story time books inside, though it's also a wonderful 'put away' spot for loose toys, journals, accessories, and even overnight packing. The pocket can hold a change of clothes for our younger girl, but isn't quite practical for use as a full blown backpack. The SPP is primarily intended to provide children with a fun and moderated storage place.

To begin with; there is a great deal of confusion regarding High School Senior Pictures. Hopefully; I can clear this up for you. Are “Senior Pictures” the same as “Senior Portraits”? Well, not exactly…..

The quick and easy explanation is that the High School Picture is what, most often, ends up in the Yearbook. That picture is only there to show what you “look like”. Where; on the other hand (when done correctly) your Senior Portraits are a creative, unique and clear representation of “who you are”.

More often than not; the Yearbook picture is taken by a photographer that works directly with your school (this is called a “contract photographer”). Sometimes; the photographer comes directly to your school and takes your picture. Other times; they will have you go to their studio to get this done. In either case; you will, most likely, be placed in front of a background and photographed.

You should be aware that; anything more than the (initial head shot) is, purely, for the benefit of the photographer & studio. FYI: After the “obligatory” Yearbook Picture has been taken; you are under no obligation to take the other photos. At that point; they have what they need for the Yearbook.

You Do Have Choices:
Some schools may allow you to have your Yearbook Picture taken by an outside photographer of your choosing. In this event; you would have a Professional Senior Portrait Photographer (of your choice) take a photo of you specifically for the Yearbook. This can be done during your Senior Portrait Session. To avoid any confusion; you should check with your school to see if you are allowed to submit your own picture for the yearbook. If not; just go to the studio and get that part done. Just tell them that you want to book a “Yearbook Only” Session. Remember; you are under NO OBLIGATION TO BUY ANYTHING.

This Is Your ONLY High School Senior Year
Having your Senior Portraits taken is a rite of passage and time to celebrate. The best way to document your own personality, likes, hobbies, pets, etc. is to have your Senior Portraits taken by a Professional Senior Portrait Photographer that specializes in capturing “Who You Are” and “What You Are All About” at this special moment in your life.

To show you an example of how different a High School Senior Picture is from a Senior Portrait; I have been brave enough to submit my own High School I.D. Don’t laugh; this was the best picture that was taken of me during that brief sitting. Although (I think) that I was quite “pretty” back then; in my opinion I look like a “deer in the headlights”. This picture is, just that, a picture. It does in no way represent anything about my great, witty personality; nor establish “who I was” at that time in my life.

Unfortunately for me; my Mom didn’t know the difference between a High School Picture and a Senior Portrait. This has resulted in my, subsequent, torment. That darn picture has been hanging as a 16” x 20” Print on my Mom’s wall (and haunting me) for well over 30 years! Hint: Just because it is a “picture” doesn’t mean it should become a “Portrait”!

To the right of my I.D, you can see one of “Miss Jessica’s” wonderful Senior Portraits. This photo was taken during a “Location Session” by a Professional Senior Portrait Photographer. First; she was photographed holding a color chart (see the photo at the top of this post). It clearly shows that she was having FUN during her “Senior Portrait Experience”. The photo which is shown to the right of my Senior I.D. is the actual Portrait that was shot a moment after Jessica put the color chart down. You can clearly see the difference between Jessica’s smile and my forced expression.

What is a (Location) Senior Portrait Session?
During Jessica’s Senior Portrait Session; the Professional Photographer took several, different poses. Her portraits were taken in her home, while playfully lying amongst that hill of yellow flowers, in front of an amazing “graffiti” wall downtown, and in the middle of a beautiful town square (surrounded by old architecture and brilliant potted floral arrangements). All in all; she spent about 2 hours (having a great time). She had 4 different clothing changes and ended up with a CD full of high quality Senior Portraits capturing the essence of her fun-loving and adventurous personality.

I am so jealous of Miss Jessica!

Here are two more photographic examples of what it is like to have a (Location) High School Senior Portrait Experience. The main difference between this and a Studio Portrait Sitting is that all of the Portraits are taken “on location” and not in a stuffy studio, somewhere. Note: Some studios will walk you right across the street to take your “location” pictures.

First; you will probably head for a picture against the tree, then over to the brick wall next door (for your “urban” location shoot). If there is time; you might be able to get a 3rd shot (for variety). Remember; the clock is running…….you will have to get all of this done in just 20 minutes because the photographer has his sessions stacked back-to-back. If that’s what you want; I’m guessing that the photographer is most likely very good at taking those pictures. After all; he’s done it for a 1,000 other Seniors.

What Happens First?
Prior to your Location Portrait Session; the Professional Senior Portrait Photographer will, usually, meet with the family (during a brief Consult). The primary purpose of this short meeting is to get to know one another. In addition, the Photographer will, thoroughly, explain exactly what to expect during the Portrait Session. At this point; the Photographer will take the opportunity to find out about the Senior’s personality, hobbies, etc. This is a very important step in the overall process. After all; how can someone capture you in a Portrait, if they have no clue “who you are”?

What Can You Expect On The Day Of Your Location Session?
When the day arrives for your Senior Portraits to be taken; you should plan on spending about 1-1/2 to 2 hours with your Photographer. While you are getting ready; the Photographer will “scout out” each area to ascertain the best locations for your photos; taking into account availability of natural lighting, shadows, etc. Don’t worry about all of that; he’s the professional. You are encouraged to participate in the selection of props (your car, dog, musical instrument, etc.) and backgrounds. Make sure that he/she understands, exactly, what you want to get from these Portraits. If you want a picture with your Letterman’s Jacket; just let him know. He’ll be more than happy to take it.

I have provided an illustration of (5) Portraits from a real Location Senior Portrait Session (above). As Moms, generally are, during the Portrait process; this young lady’s Mom was with her throughout the entire Portrait Session providing support, collaborating on clothing changes (sometimes holding the reflector to assist the photographer) but for the most part; just having fun and bonding with her daughter during this, once in a lifetime, event. Remember; you’re not only taking your Senior Portraits; you are building memories.

The young lady (shown directly above) not only had (5) different clothing changes during her session; but her Grandmother’s home featured this spectacular garden and boat dock. It was unanimous that this was to be the backdrop.

During the initial Consult; Mom had made it clear that she really loved the pink Prom Dress. Aware of this; the photographer took a moment to capture that elegant shot of her in the pink gown. Mom bought this Portrait of her daughter to hang above the mantel in their home. On the other hand; Grandma decided that she was partial to the 2nd shot; so she purchased that Portrait as a 16” x 20” to commemorate the special occasion.

This young lady's Grandfather owned a yacht moored, just below, the home and gardens. Again; they moved to that location and took photos down on the dock. That last portrait was taken just for Grandpa. Did you notice; every one of these Portraits were relevant to this, particular, Senior?

Are you starting to see the difference between a simple “Senior Picture” and a “Senior Portrait”?

Let’s Talk Cost:
The “Package” that the contract studio wants to sell you can sometimes cost the same as, or more, than a Complete Location Senior Portrait Experience. Commonly nowadays; a lot of Professionals are offering all of your images on a CD to do with, whatever you wish. With this option; you have all of the control. This is a very popular way to go. It’s economical and just makes good sense.

Now; that I have completely explained what it is like to experience a Professional (Location) Senior Portrait Session, I have decided to show you one more example. I didn’t want to leave the boys out. After all; everyone should take advantage of this chance to capture a moment that is gone to soon.

As you can see in the Portraits of our Senior Boy (above) the Photographer totally captured this young man’s propensity for extracurricular activities such as skateboarding and his love of paintball. Of course; he wanted those two photos and Mom wanted the more formal Portraits that are shown in the middle. Just as with everything in life; compromises were made. In the end; everyone received the “Senior Portraits” they had wanted.

The above Portrait (examples) encompass the broad and diverse spectrum that can only be achieved by spending the time, and getting to “know”, all of the complexities of what it is to be a High School Senior. Why would you want to just have your Senior Pictures taken; when for the same amount of money you can have a memorable, once in a lifetime experience taking Professional Location Senior Portraits like those shown in this article? The difference in price is negligible in comparison to the rewards.

The choice is yours……. Do you want the “Senior Portrait Experience” or just a “Senior Picture”? Whatever you choose; remember – these images will be around a very long time.

Momma Told Me: Don't be afraid of the dark.

About a month back I presented you with the notion of connective mediation; or the impact of touch and rhythm through human contact. The feeling of safety we get when nestled in mother's arms, or the sense of security that radiates from the firm grip of a lover's embrace. As a child, I had the worst time falling asleep and would often stay up for hours, playing with Barbies beneath my covers. I will admit I was quite terrified of the dark, and the older I got, the more I seemed to rationalize those fears. By 7, instead of monsters and goblins, it was kidnappers and child predators I feared most- and I was convinced they lived in my closet. When I'd truly work myself into an episode I could feel my heart pound as though it would burst straight through the walls of my chest. Inevitably, that would prove enough to distract my focus, and away I'd slip with visions of heart attacks and hooded men. If only there were something there as comforting as an older sibling, Momma's warm embrace, or even the family dog, to engage and dissuade the fears of a (slightly) neurotic child.

Banana Design Lab, born in 2005 as a Design company focused on the innovations of lifestyle designs that also happened to entertain one's soul,exemplifies tangible art. Their collection of lighting and motion studies translate to everyday mood, and soul food, enhancers that bring out one's inner child (and even romantic). With a simple desire to create one of a kind products that are high tech, yet easy to use, while remaining good for you, food for the soul, BDL commands a special niche of consumers. Their demographic runs the gamut from wide eyed toddle to educated businesswoman, and everywhere in between. Lucky for us, the word has not spread quite like the commercial wildfire of novelty gifts, and the company's integrity remains in tact! I must say, one of my favorite things about Banana Design Lab is the candid approach to customer connection and quality production.

While the brand offers a slowly growing collection of mood enhancing plush and play lighting, today we will focus on the unique ChuChi Plushie Night-Light line. Very similar in concept to previously acclaimed My Beating Heart range (of the same company), ChuChi is it's own character and brings with it a set of monster busting stories. Combining the rhythmic power of heartbeat intimating technology (through visual cue rather than tangible), with the alternative powerful nigh light, ChuChi is functional to soothe on multiple levels. Suitable for ages 3+, ChuChi is remarkably lightweight and incredibly soft to the touch. This floppy little, curious, critter houses a small battery compartment within a velcro pouch in the lower back, and operates via a single push button in it's hand. Simply push once to engage the heartbeat (located centrally in the chest), or twice to engage the ultra bright night light (located within the head).

According to Banana Design Lab ChuChi are nocturnal creatures from 'Northern' Siberia, with the natural ability to sleep all day and guard (from monsters) at night. The ChuChi itself reminds me of a soft lamb, with a monkey head, and is quite floppy to hold and thin in frame. The internal lighting is almost non-visible in daylight, yet the doll's headlight is impressively bright enough to illuminate a child's bedroom, or hallway. I received an adorable ChuChi plushie for review here on Momma Told Me and was not expecting what I found. Inside the soothing themed window box was a minky soft little plush that reminded me of my favorite security bear from childhood. The ChuChi was fastened in with 4 cut away tags, and flopped into my hands, ultra light. On the bum is a soft sewn in tag, and the seam to a velcro pouch where the battery compartment is housed.

Operation is controlled by pushing a sewn in button on the right (when facing ChuChi) palm. Simply press once to start the pulsing heartbeat cycle, and again to switch to the bright head lamp. Hold the button in to turn ChuChi off, or allow for the battery saver to automatically cycle him off. ChuChi is virtually silent, and a visual (and tactile) sensation product. The ChuChi truly isn't visible in standard lighting, and gets its greatest effects sans night lights, in darkness. I like that the pulse to head operation is easy and quick to switch from, in case a shadow is spotted in a flash. It's also cute that the child gets to 'squeeze' their ChuChi's hand for operation, and can hug the little critter while still getting the lighting effects of it's illuminating pulse. In truth, I was quite surprised with just how bright the ChuChi's head is in a dark room; almost good enough to read by! What a great travel pal he would make for Grandma's or even camping!

The ChuChi makes a wonderful security, and calming tool for children who have difficulty with the dark and/or falling asleep. And those that outgrow it's security uses will still love it for years thanks to the friendly character creation and ultra plush (cuddle worthy) design.

Cool.Calm.Collected. Apparel : A New Year's Reflection, Giveaway, and Review~ 1/7

Momma Told Me: There'd be days like these.

As we wrap up our holiday season, and year, this coming week- I felt it would be a good time for reflection and, perhaps, inspiration. Loyal readers already know the virtues of perseverance, and even gratitude (for each and every day we are given), I hold thanks to Momma's personal triumphs with hodgkins lymphoma (circa 1990). I was more so reminded that the struggles of cancer, and many illness' do not check out at the door of remission, when I heard a local charity on the radio this week. It was their intent, and focus to support and encourage those who had battled cancer, because cancer is never truly defeated, as the impact is felt lifelong. This is a cause, and message, that I hold dear enough to my own heart, and serves as a personal reminder of gratitude for each, unobstructed, day I am given.

What none of my readers know is that I have been separated from my husband for the majority of this year, and we have an arrangement to part ways upon the 1st of the new year. As he walks away from his responsibility, into his mother's house, I am left to clean up the aftermath of several years together and transition an entire house into a room. Furthermore, I have been experiencing quite concerning health issues, that have noticeably impacted the more recent post quantity, as I struggle to juggle a move, divorce, and 2 jobs. Those on the other end of my screen, as many of them uncover these realities for the first time, inquire how I've managed through the past year so 'unaffected'. While the reality is that I am far from 'unaffected', and certainly still quite human in my emotions, I have the will and perseverance to tackle each days obstacle on a day by day basis. I am not super woman, I have merely adopted a mentality of 'Cool, Calm, Collected' best materialized by the collection of apparel and accessories inspired by Canadian CCC.

It's a philosophy many of us hear throughout our lives, but a difficult one to put into effect and motion. 'Turning the other cheek' per say, is not our natural instinct when others, or the world, seems to continually strike up down. However, I wholly believe that everything happens for a reason, and (yes, another cliche) What doesn't kill us only makes us stronger'. At 25 I could sit here and type of a list of personal injustices from youth and present, and explain why I feel I've had it unusually 'rough'. However, in true Momma Told Me fashion (after all that is the inspiration for this blog and it's format), I prefer to take that which I have lived through, and transform it into motivation for the future. None of us enjoyed a belt to the behind as a child, but we did benefit from the negative reinforcement that molded us into more conscientious young adults.

Over the past few weeks I have been asked, often, how I do it. Yes, the world sometimes feels quite heavy on my shoulders, but I can honestly look around and ask, "Do what?" My life is by no means a catastrophe, and a life without obstacles would truly be no life at all. I could cite wars raging in countries over sea, or the mothers with starving children on the corner of my own city, a child (and their family) battling cancer, or a son waking up to get the call that his father is not coming home. My real inspiration? Those people. My mother, my best friend, the child down the street, a stranger I do not know; who at this very minute is waking up to a world that will never be the same, and will boldly make the choice to wake up again tomorrow. There's nothing extraordinary about what I do, and chances are this year has presented you with it's own list of choices and challenges. But I can remain Cool.Calm.Collected in the knowledge that 2012 is a time for new. New smiles, new laughter, new adventures, and even new tears- but life, in itself, is gorgeous, and each day a gift!

Momma Told Me: Childhood memories are meant to be passed down.

When you were a child it's likely you experienced the calming effects of a mobile, above your crib. The soothing movement, and reassuring patterns of light that many parents rely on to lull little ones to sleep tap into natural responses of comfort. In my nursery, though my first conscious recollection of it began around age 4, was the most unusual light mobile I have ever seen. In truth, I have spent many years of my adult life hunting down a replica, or even that which mimics it in spirit. There have been some that came close, but none as whimsical, and childlike as my worn and well loved light mobile. This particular mood accessory was a simple black stand, with an ordinary bulb stationed within a simple plastic frame. Atop that bulb was a particularly point, where a magical shade of rainbow shapes would balance. When the clear plastic dome was placed over it, and the lights turned off, my entire room was blanketed with a planetarium effect of revolving, multi-colored, shapes.

I'm sure I thought it was magic in the beginning; then curiosity lead way to a demand, how on Earth did it spin without and gears or knobs? As it turns out, the very delicate projection shade, which teetered ever so vicariously on top of that bulb, had angled vents. As the bulb produced massive heat, at close range, the warm air traveled up, through the angled vents of the shade, resulting in a steady rotation. I've had that night light for over 20 years, quite possibly one of the things I've owned longest, and still delight in the magic of it's spinning light today. And this, is precisely how I came across Spin Shades, night lights. While not quite as amazing as the visual projection display of my coveted light mobile, their product serves a similar purpose with the same harnessed scientific backing; movement through heat.

As it turns out, the creator behind Spin Shades was also inspired by childhood memories, though his stemmed from those of Christmas past. As it turns out, Peter's fondness for his grandmother's rotating shade ornaments easily transitioned into a product the entire family could love year-round. When Peter's own son came to love the hand-me-down shades he knew it was time to adapt his grandmother's concept as a reinvented night light. Entirely family owned, for the past 15 years, Spin Shades has delighted customers (young and old) worldwide with their ever growing collection of shades, and affordable whimsical heat-based rotation.

The Spin Shade, much like my favorite childhood accessory, is entirely safe for use around family members of all ages (just utilize the same common sense you would with any other plug in), and operates on mechanical free movement. With an average height of 4.5", and a 7 watt bulb, this flip switch night light plugs in for immediate operation. Simply unpack the shade, base, bulb, and coil. Next, screw the bulb into the socket, and extend the coil, pulling the wide end down to the base of the bulb. The effect will work best if the coil is straight, and resting directly on the tip of the bulb. Next, locate the small divot in the underside of the shade's top, and balance the shade upon the tip of the coil. Plug into the wall, switch on, and wait 2-3 minutes for the natural movement to begin!

Spin Shades are sold in single night light, multi packs (complete with base, coil, bulb, and 4 assorted/themed shades), or individual shades. I appreciate that Spin Shades includes an extra bulb and coil with each shade. While it is fun to collect and coordinate shades, it is also nice to have back up accessories in case of burn out or damage. While there are well over 100 shade designs, they are fairly the same in build save a varied scallop fringe, and the exception of the laser cut specialties. Browse from specified categories such as Coastal, Floral, Teen, Spring, and Children's for a perfect fit to any room. The majority of Spin Shades' single night lights retail for $14.00, while replacement/additional shades are sold at $5.00 on average.

I received my own Spin Shade for review here on Momma Told Me, and was thrilled to find an animal print to tickle my wild side. My Zebra print Night Light, from Spin Shades, was packaged in a ready-to-gift window box, displayed as one would find it plugged in. Complete assembly instructions, and usage tips, were included, though the process from box to wall was effortless. The shade itself was made of a thicker paper-like material than I'd expected, and I was glad to find it was not as accident prone as I. The sturdy plug in base allows for plenty of grace room from shade to wall, and our Spin Shade began to spin within 2 minutes. I have noticed, in our bathroom, the shade will not spin with our vent window open. When drafts are present, it can disrupt the flow of warm air, and the rotation of the shade. Momma's Mondays: High Quality from a Well Known Brand: The North Face Beanie & Scarves

As we all know; there are literally thousands and thousands of different styles in beanies and hats out there. What is also well known; is that The North Face has a wonderful product line which is geared to keep you comfortable in all types of weather. Though the years; The North Face brand name has become synonymous with premium, high quality clothing and accessories. Their Gordon Lyons Beanie is a prime example of this. It is available in (3) colors: Graphite Grey Heather, Weimaraner Brown Heather and TNF Black.

The North Face Gordon Lyons Beanie ($30.00) that I received to review is the Weimaraner Brown Heather one. I really like this color. It goes well with, just about, everything in my husband’s wardrobe. This beanie is a “one size fits all” and fits snugly onto your head. The exterior knit is composed of polyester sweater fleece and it is a very tight, closely-knit fabric. This will, definitely, help to keep those icy winter winds away from your scalp and ears.

The inside of this beanie is just like my favorite, super soft and comfy sweat-shirt. It has that soft, fleece, fuzzy interior. That is why it feels really good against your skin. It has been constructed to dry quickly, which is very important because; there is nothing like putting on a cold, damp beanie. Oh; actually, there is one thing that I really hate even more….finding a damp beanie stuffed into my husband’s jacket; several days later.

The North Face has such a wide variety of offerings, especially when it comes to cold weather wear. The North Face Gordon Lyons Scarf ($35.00) that I received for review is another great example of the, overall, quality of their product line. This scarf is wider than the 2nd scarf that is reviewed (below). It is “one size fits all” and feels great against the skin. It was very comfortable around my husband’s neck and provided the coverage that one would expect in a men’s scarf. Just as with the Gordon Lyons Beanie; this item comes in the same (3) Colors. The color of the review Beanie is, again, the Weimaraner Brown Heather.

This is, pure and simple, meant to keep your neck warm and toasty. Being constructed out of polyester sweater fleece; it is designed to insulate while still providing the “quick-drying” features of the Flash Fleece Scarf. I found the construction (tightness of the weave) to be closer and denser than the second scarf; which led me to believe that is might insulate and block the freezing winds, a little better. I could be completely wrong on that; it’s just my opinion, so you might have to decide for yourself. Time will tell; as we head straight into the harsh Ohio winter. Both products held up very well when washed; with no distortion or shrinkage.

The North Face Classic 200 Fleece Scarf ($30.00). What I liked about this garment is that it feels very smooth and supple. Since I am a stickler for comfort, especially when something is coming into direct contact with my skin, this is my favorite scarf of the two I reviewed. All in all; these (3) garments are exactly what I would have expected from The North Face. Yes; you could purchase less expensive winter accessories, but you might want to ask yourself; do I want quality and comfort? Or do I just want something to throw on and bear with the consequences?

Momma Told Me: I never met a candle I didn't like!

There's been much said about candles, on Momma Told Me, over the past year. All of my, and Momma's, readers know that I inherited a love for burning wax from my mother. My father, who is quite sensitive to strong fragrances often solicited a response from Momma I found quite funny. In fact, every day we'd race home from (picking me up at) school and light her favorite ball of wax. Then, just before dinner left the stove, and Pop hit the door at 6PM, I'd watch as she secretively tamped the wick, putting the candle out. Perhaps most ironic, was the series of glass covers and even aerosol sprays she would use to create the illusion of of our 'forbidden' crime. Of course, I can't recall my father ever, truly, getting upset over a burnt candle- but it was a fond memory from my childhood none-the-less.

So what else is there to say about candles? Well, I do believe we've established quite earnestly that all candles are not created equal. While price, build, fragrance, and size are all contributing factors to one's brand of choice, I am always on the lookout for that golden standard that will end the hunt for good. Having said that, I should share that I was greatly alarmed to learn the content of a candle impacts much more than the burning experience, when my Aunt came to visit from Lousiana this summer. As it turns out, my nephew is quite sensitive to air quality, and and, living in the marshes of LA, a dehumidifier is ran around the clock in their household. Likewise, a candle addict in her own right, my Aunt burns extravagant candles nearly as often. When the humidity began to creep up this year she was shocked to find herself going through filters at an alarming rate. The machine would produce horribly blackened screens, often discoloring within hours of being cleaned! There had to be something she had changed since the previous summer.

As it turns out, not surprisingly, she had changed her brand of candles. The designer multi-wick jars, infused with her favorite fragrance, were costing her much more than a pretty penny. Their synthetic waxes were burning by products and extensive chemical laden soot directly into the air in her home! After all she did to keep her grandson breathing safe and comfortable, something she did without thinking was potentially causing him more harm than her good. Immediately she went to work, researching this phenomenon, and how she could avoid this risk, while still keeping aromatic peace in her home. What she learned was that the paraffin based wax, in her high end candles, were known to leach toxins into the air upon burning. Soy based waxes, of natural origin proved to be the perfect solution, clean burning and soot free; a clearly healthier alternative for her family, and the Earth.

Since my aunt's discovery, and a little research of my own on the subject of wax content, I've been wholly converted to soy based candles. Often, larger candles, will contain an equally safe beeswax and soy compound that extends burning time, and enriches the candle quality in general. The unique blend achieved by today's company, Milkhouse Candle Creamery, is especially wonderful for those that suffer from allergy sensitivities. (That's right ladies, you can stop hiding the candles when your husbands get home!) So, on paper, it all sounds good, right? Well, without knowing any of these facts, these candles sell themselves on presentation and fragrance alone. Originally hand poured in canning jars, and sold at local auctions, these 'wax of art' have come a long way, yet still pay homage to their MidWest origins. I received a selection of their best selling formats and fragrances for review here on Momma Told Me. I must say I immediately found myself wanting to head North and explore an old dirt road. I received a marvelous Milkhouse Loaf Crock Candle in Apple Strudel, and am still amazed by the 6 wick, 130+ hours of smooth burn- not to mention how beautiful it looks on our dining table when not in use!

Another favorite of mine has been the affordable, and vintage inspired, Half Pint Milkbottles, which resemble dairy mill bottles and come capped with a tongue in cheek cardboard 'cap'. I think having a 'carton' of 6 of these would make a darling gift for any country candle lover! My impression of Milkhouse Candle Creamery has been so positive, I've already tracked down local vendors, suggested them to my friend's shop, and placed an order for Christmas! Momma Told Me: The world is a dog's toy box.

Growing up, we never had the room for a dog to properly live with us; or at least by the time we did my parents were much more engulfed in other issues than to take on a new pup. We had cats, several of them, through the years. For this reason, dogs fascinated me. They were the forbidden creatures of the pet world, and I took every chance I got to schmooze those friendly enough. Whether it was the neighbor's pooch, or the four legged friend of a family member, I was often seen making faces and chasing after dogs. Mind you, I didn't always have this romantic relationship with the canine kind; there was a time where the line had to be drawn, and I was made to see just why Momma preferred Purrrrs to Pups.

The event in question revolved around one coveted stuffed dolphin (Flipper) and a routine visit to grandma's house. Just old enough to have weened off my security blanket, but not yet willing to set down my favorite toy, I flounced into her living room already anticipating the reception of sloppy kisses I would surely receive from my canine family. The following was a blur. 1, 2, 3 dogs? barreled towards me, all near my own height and powerful enough to knock me backward in their own anticipation. I made a shrill noise, something to the effect of "Puppy!!!" and placed my arms out to wrap around a furry mane. One of the others, likely jealous they were not receiving hugs, took the moment to notice I had dropped my precious dolphin, and in an instant was off. The dog I had been holding jerked back, to investigate the commotion and, puppyless, I was now aware of the fact Flipper was gone. What followed was a comedic game of moneky-in-the-middle, in which grandma and Momma continually cornered the offending dog, while the other 2 pups worked in tandem to protect the revered 'toy'. After all, it was just a 'game' to them!

I'm ashamed to admit there were many tears to follow, when Flipper returned hemorrhaging his insides, a grizzly sight to behold. Of course, today, I understand pups are no different than children. They have no concept of ownership, and will play with anything, simply because it looks fun! The best solution? Well, to purchase them their own, designated toys, of course! But what do you do when Fido tears through their toys, only to be left fighting boredom, shortly after the tags are ripped off? Because KyJen knows that both owner and pet are left with nothing but frustration when a good toy goes bad, they've dedicated an entire team to creative and engaging toy construction. We recently received a KyJen Petey Penguin Hard Boiled Softies toy for review, with Kyra, here on Momma Told Me. The unique Hard Boiled Softies line is designed with the rough play pup in mind, and features a durable rubber 'yolk' that resembles a kong, and is safe to chew. This oval shaped inner core is actually entirely removable (from the soft plus character lining), and makes a grunting noise that's a little more tolerable than high pitched squeaks, yet just as engaging. Because the character 'skin' is entirely removable, it is easy to wash and clean by hand, so there is no fear of outdoors play. In fact, the rubber core allows this penguin to bounce and engage dogs in unexpected ways, and is ergonomic for long distance throwing. We love that Petey lasted this rambunctious (8 month) pups initial trials, and has persevered longer than her other toys, as the noisemaker did not die within minutes of being broken in. Puncturing the thick rubber 'yolk' and stopping the grunter has proved to be impossible as of yet, for Kyra.

Petey goes inside and out, though the muddy character sleeve is always promptly washed before making its way inside for indoor play. And yes, the rubber 'yolk' passes as a toy on it's own in the mean time. Kyra will sit and 'honk' on her Hard Boiled Softie until someone gets up to throw it, then barrel back for another round. In general, these are fairly solid/sizable toys, about 4" in height and intended for medium to large breed mouths. Don't let that discourage the small breed owners though, I've seen these toys loved by everything down to short legged little dachshunds. Because their interaction can change from rolling and chewing to tossing and bouncing, it is very versatile, and great for multi-dog homes. The current collection of characters includes a Bee, Penguin, Shark, Sheep, and Hedgehog. Momma Told Me: If you keep eating all that chocolate, I swear, child, you're going to send yourself to an early grave!

I can't imagine a world without chocolate. For me, it would be like waking every morning to a day with just 4 hours of sunlight. While there would be plenty of bustle and purpose, warmth, and energy during those 4 hours- what on Earth would I do the other 20? Sure, I could manage, and we, as humans, would adapt with technology and artificial lighting, but it would never compare to those 4 glorious hours each day. I imagine that is what it would be like, never again making a chocolate cake, or pairing bittersweet cocoa with savory flavors like wasabi and bacon. No more chocolate milk. Just 'milk', white, boring, and sometimes flavored strawberry- which, of course, could never compare to chocolate.

When I was young, Momma once restricted my diet as part of her growing health concern I would inherit my father's bad genes and one day croak of a heart attack somewhere around 40 (like great granddaddy). I was convinced, however, that I was being punished for some unspeakable evil I wasn't even aware I had committed. All 'contraband' was removed from our house (though I'm sure Pop had his stash), and the closest I'd get to the sweet substance were these hideous powdered 'shakes' she fed me for lunch. As a child, one can imagine, this seemed to go on for years. Every day without chocolate was the very end of my existence (yes, I was a drama queen). Looking back, I suppose I shall be doomed should I ever become diabetic, because, next to bacon, chocolate is my absolute, incomparable, favorite indulgence.

Now, with this obsession, I've made it my mission to seek out some of the world's best confections. I've come a long way from throwing hissy fits for a Hershey's bar. In fact, my lips wouldn't touch the stuff today. The truth is there simply are too many gourmet chocolates out there, made lovingly by hand, with the utmost consideration for palette and texture- to ever waste calories on such a childish confection again. And, I must say, I believe I have found one of the World's best chocolatiers. Those who follow Momma Told Me closely are likely sitting up just a little straighter, their ears (er, eyes) patiently pointed towards the screen in anticipation. For I have reviewed over 50 chocolate brands and namesakes this past year and have never given such praise. Others have been tasty, yes, but none have met their asking price point so deserving as Cocoa Dolce,

After recently experiencing a variety of Cocoa Dolce's extraordinary confections, I sit here typing, excited to share the elegant chocolate art which brought back feelings I've seldom had since childhood. Founded in 2005, by Wichita, KS native Beth Tully, Cocoa Dolce aims to capture the excitement of chocolate combined with cutting edge culinary techniques and confectionery combinations. Beth, who most certainly does not look her age (must be all that wonderful chocolate), reminds me of a fellow blonde entrepreneurial blogger- which instantly drew my attention. Fiercely ambitious and determined, at 50, Beth left her career in Sales and Speech Therapy to pursue a passion she'd long reserved for family and Holidays. Realizing, as they say, she was 'not getting any younger', she completed her Maitre Chocolatier (Master Chocolatier) certification with Ecole Chocolat’s Professional Chocolatier Program in Vancouver.

However, there are some aspects of Cocoa Dolce, and it's success, which one cannot simply attribute to schooling. Beth remains committed that her confections should never contain preservatives, and that her handmade treats should always be made with the highest quality imported Belgium Chocolate. However, most appealing to me, is the sheer variety of flavors and unusual compositions, she has crafted in the kitchen. Customers of Cocoa Dolce can browse a selection of premium chocolates in collections such as Cocktails In A Box, Wine, and Seasonal.

While one of their truly intriguing Seasonal Specialties includes the tempting (visually and in concept) Chocolate Stuffed Figs, I was equally happy to receive a year-round favorite, Tartaruga. Better known as Classic Pecan Turtles, this gift ready display box of 5 dark chocolate enrobed Pecan Turtles retails for $12, and arrives displayed in a slender see through box. The underside of each (2") turtle reveals full size, gourmet, salted pecans within a thick layer of chewy caramel. I especially loved how the nuts seemed to crunch beneath each bite, while the caramel held the chocolate together, as it melted along my tongue. Just one of these turtles was a truly indulgent treat!

Just in time for the holiday season is the brand's latest release, their Seasonal Cheer and Chocolate Collection (6PC). I had that 'Kid In A Candy Store' excitement all over again as I carefully peeled back the cover to reveal a 'best by' date card (remember, no preservatives), and Cocoa Dolce guide. Comprised of Gingerbread, Pumpkin Spice, Egg Nog, Peanut Butter Dreams, and Buttermint Bourbon/Date, it's sure to have any stocking stuffed with raves and cheer. For just $15, this self contained collection is boxed in a classy sleeved truffle box, with colorful illustrations and truffle descriptions. The colorful White Chocolate Buttermint truffle resembles a red and yellow stained gemstone, with a thick outer shell that gives way to reveal a decadent elegance infused with organic essential oils of peppermint! My favorite, the Date & Bourbon Truffle was an unexpected hit, thanks to it's multiple layers of texture, from the chewy Medjool date chunks to the hints of maple, roasted pecans, and (of course) bourbon. Each beautifully crafted chocolate was satisfying in itself and gave a special nod to classic holiday tradition.

I was also sent a sampler of Cocoa Dolce's 9PC Cocktails In A Box , for review here on Momma Told Me. I think, after exploring the $18 Cocoa Lovers, 9 piece (also available in expanded 18), box I can confidently say it doesn't get much better. If I were to never consume another chocolate again, and simply live of of the 9 selections in this box- I think could be quite content. After all, once you've tasted the artisan perfection that is Cocoa Dolce, it's hard not to hold such high standards to anything else. Like a chocolate canvas, each and every varied shape, texture, and color is meant to engage the consumer on every level of their senses. From the lush (hand painted) Codorniu Brut Cava Dark Chocolate Truffle to the high class Disaronno Originale Amaretto (rolled in toasted almonds), no detail has been spared in recreating an authentic chocolate counterpart to my favorite liquor indulgences. As a tongue in cheek presentation, the gift ready box comes complete with coaster and cocktail swords; a touch sure to tickle any recipient this holiday season.

Not unlike prior Cocoa Dolce experiences, I was delighted to discover the unique depth and palette achieved in just one tiny box of truffles. The inclusion of a range than seemed to span cocktail to wine, to liquor, meant a culinary journey of sweet and savory proportions. My favorite, in this particular collection would have to be the Champagne Truffle, rolled in it's ironic coating of 'sparkle sugar' with a hearty Brut Cava and Bittersweet Ganache base. The shell, thanks to the sugar coating, almost crackles as you bit into it, for a playful texture that reminds me of the popping bubbles within it's namesake. Equally magical is the unexpected favorite, Fluer De Lis shaped, Scotch confection comprised of wonderfully bitter dark chocolate and a 12 year Sherry Wood aged single malt scotch. The alcohol content is, of course, safe for consumption, but tangible on the palette!

Momma's Monday: Allergy Luxe® Bed Bug Mattress Protector and Pillow Protectors

I'm just going to say it; bed bugs are a reality. When they take up residence in your home and bedding; it can be extremely difficult to convince them to leave. They are like your relatives (everyone has them) that have no sense, as to, how long a stay is too long. You can do their laundry, pack the car and even start it for them; but they still linger on. Since I just purchased a brand new Queen Size Bed; I have requested to review the Allergy Luxe® Bed Bug Mattress Protector – Queen and (2) Pillow Protectors. What good would one Pillow Protector be on a bed with two Pillows? I’m just saying….. These products are available at Bed Bath & Beyond, so they are virtually available to everyone. If there isn’t a store near you; you can go online and order them.

Recently having moved to the lovely state of Ohio, my husband’s allergies have gone nuts! That coupled with the high humidity all up and down this area of the country; if he’s not sneezing, he’s sweating all night long. I had to find something to protect our, really expensive, new mattress and pillows.

In the past I’ve purchased those “stiff” plastic bed protector covers, in an effort to keep him from being exposed to dust and such all night long. I was also trying to keep a barrier between us and the actual mattress; in order to prolong it’s (the mattresses) life. This all backfired horribly, though; yes the mattress protectors and pillow protectors did their jobs; they also made the problem with sweating even worse. Since plastic doesn’t breathe and allow any airflow under your body; it just basically, is like laying in a sauna. Then there is the noise! Crunch, crunch, crunch with every movement either one of us made. Who can sleep with that?

Oh; and it’s not all about the hubby. I am at that point in life where I am experiencing some pretty severe “night sweats”. I’m hot then I’m cold, then I’m dripping wet from perspiration. That coupled with my heart/lung problems; makes for a very difficult night’s sleep. I really don’t need the aggravations of my bedding being uncomfortable and “noisy” to boot.

I am picky about the mattresses I sleep on. They must be clean and free from odors of any kind. This probably comes from my recent travels and one to many (low budget) hotel stays. I have been more freaked out; than I could ever convey to you. I really don’t want to get all that graphic; but I will say that I did receive several suspicious “bites” during some of our stays. There is also an additional barrier just under the zipper made of a couple of inches of material. I did it, all by myself! I didn’t even need my husband’s assistance, yeah! Momma Told Me: If you dream it, you can make it!

I was always one of those children with, what some would classify as, an over-active imagination. I could have a conversation with a broom, or turn the empty lot next door into the Forest of Fangorn (yes, thats a LOTR reference). I'd argue with anything that would listen, craft a pile of sticks and some old yarn into a guitar, and pretend our rusted wheelbarrow was a Formula 1 racing car. Kids have the inherent creativity to play with boxes for hours, but I was born to a true crafter. Momma always had her hands in something, and never saw the world as anything less than her scrapyard. One thing I especially love about the world of handmade decor and gifting, is the ability to communicate with an artist to create an item that is truly a representation of the recipient. Just try writing Mattel and asking them to change the name of your favorite Barbie to that of your eldest daughter, or requesting a Lego set of your favorite family camping spot- not gonna happen!

When I was younger we had to rely on the quarterly craft fairs, sometimes even traveling hours to get our fix off season, to see the latest creative trends and creations. Thankfully, Etsy offers a plethora of unique individuals and their sometimes offensive, often ingenious, always thought provoking crafts. One such heartwarming shop is that of Erwin Doodads, ran by humble crafter and Oklahoma City native, Marcia. It's no secret that 2011 has been the year of bowling, around my household. My father is a self professed fanatic (second only to his love of the Red Sox), and my family frequently makes an effort to throw a few rounds whenever we can manage to be all in the same place. We've acquired our own balls, bags, shoes, and gear; some of us have even joined leagues (Pop's now on 2!) One thing that's come up quite a lot recently is the desire for each of us to own our own pin. Thankfully, Marcia just so happens to craft in a medium that speaks our language!

I was tickled to receive a Penguin Bowling Pin from Erwin Doodads on Etsy, and marved at just how hefty these suckers are. As a nice upcycled bonus, all Marcia's pins have seen real action in an actual alley, and proudly bear the dents and scars, adding character. My penguin arrived with a foam top hat (simply adorable), that can be worn on/off for display. I just want to bring my buddy with me on Wednesdays and make him our team captain, he truly lights up the room and gathers so many compliments.
