Momma Told Me: Back To School is a season we must all prepare for.

The West Coast tends to return to school later in the Summer than those states more Central and East Coast; our cousins in Oregon still have one more week of vacation, believe it or not. And, while Sabrina (11) started middle school this week, her teacher will inevitably send home the dreaded 'grade' supplies list over the weekend. You know the list, it often has protractors, special calculators, specific gauge ink pens, and the preferred type of glue for that 'sugar cube' model the kids will be building mid-year.

These things aren't an immediate need, and thankfully so, because walking into our local Walmart anytime soon would result in a panic attack. Growing up, we were always the house on the street with all the gadgets, and latest technology. We had 3 PCs in the mid-80s, and an office full of the latest appliances and electronics. Looking back, I realize I used to take this for granted. I'd bring in beautifully bound reports with laminated covers and wonder why my reports sparkled more than those of my friends. Didn't everyone have a copy machine at home? Wasn't a laminator as common as a Polaroid? The truth is, my parents probably spent a small fortune to have these 'cutting edge' consumer products; while owning your own office components today is much more affordable. I still recall our family's first laminator. It had a bulky roll of 'film' that I'd have to fuss with to pull apart, and half the time I'd break the lamination is I cut too close to the document seal. Then there were the basic safety concerns of a hot surface, high energy use, and complicate operation (nor was it very quiet). Using the Saturn 95 for the first time was equal to a breath of fresh air- Not only were the illuminated buttons easy to navigate, but the operation of the machine was whisper quiet. My new Fellowes laminator came with a package of lamination pouches which were easy to organize (for maximum space management), and bypassed the traditional fuss of lamination rolls and feeding. Operation was as simple as allowing the unit to heat up, selecting the optimal thickness of the items being laminated, then inserting the lamination pouch, sealed end first, into the front of the unit. The Fellowes Saturn 95 then 'grabs' the pouch and automatically feeds it through to the opposite end.

It had been a few years since I'd last invested in a laminator, and the operation was night and day. I couldn't believe how cool to the touch the front of the machine was, during operation, or how utterly silent the process was. It was so simple our 10 year old (with an adult watching) could do it- and boy did she get a kick out of seeing her favorite drawings 'preserved for all time.' Naturally, having a Fellowes Laminator around will come in handy for various projects, especially school projects, throughout the year; but there are many creative uses for a home laminator too. When I make 'meals in a jar' this holiday season I will be laminating my recipe cards to tie to the lids. Momma put me to work at an early age.

Outside of a, seemingly, never-ending roaster of weekly chores I was expected to play cashier. Momma would spend all year long preparing for a single weekend, the local Fall Harvest Festival. This was much more than a carnival with pumpkin carving exhibits and hay rides, this was a full blown artisan and crafts fair with over 200 vendors spread across a giant municipal park. For some reason it feel on a 10 year-old to count the change and safeguard the cash; all in a little tan, Nylon, fanny pack. Over the course of those weekends Momma would do thousands of dollars in business, and bill by bill would be neatly tucked into the incredulous safeguard of a zipper. Looking back, today, I just may tell my therapist that was the beginning of a very anxious childhood.

It may not seem like it but today, as an adult, I conduct a fair amount of 'business' on my own. I frequent a spot at the local swap meet once a month, help out with charity fundraising, and even encourage the entrepreneurship of a 10 year old. I am ashamed to say, up until recently, I have always relied on a convoluted system of manilla envelopes and blind luck to get through my accounting endeavors without catastrophe. We found the button for the latch required a little more pressure to open than we'd expected, and it took a little getting used to. We also learned quickly that the lack of pressure clamps (or covered drawers) meant money (particularly change) was subject to spilling in transit. I certainly feel much more secure stashing our 'profits' in a container such as this, than mixing the money with the contents of my purse or easy to lose envelopes.

In all it was a very profitable day. We raised some donations for our Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraising efforts, and Sabrina(10) walked away with $20 and a refresher in her mathematics.
