On Corporate Responsibility for Franchised Locations

Momma Told Me: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

I'm about to make a statement that, at first glance, may seem odd to many.

You see, some of the brands I hold the highest loyalty towards didn't actually start out on the best foot with me. In fact, many of them down right flopped, and in big ways!

As a modern consumer, with limitless options for material product purchases, and a plethora of discounts, deals, and reviews for local food; I have the luxury of personally 'blacklisting' a company or establishment. That is, I could most likely choose to never patronize the brand again, choosing an alternative option, and never feel inconvenienced for it. I can shop online for deals in other countries, communicate with Yelp-ers about frequented eateries, and I have the right to state my opinions in public forums, like this blog, without being held for slander. My point? We, as consumers, hold the power.

Now, I've never bashed a brand or company on Momma Told Me, nor do I feel the need to call a company out, or mention anyone by name. However, I have noticed an alarming pattern with big chain businesses lately, and appreciate the forum to 'vent' per say. I am the type of consumer who values Customer Service far above cost or convenience. Sure, I love a 'good deal', but let's face it, it's not really a 'good deal' if the product falls apart, or say, the quality equals the price? This is why I spend much more time spreading my loyalty to brands (big and small) that take the time to listen to their consumers.

Ah, 'listen', there's a big word! With retail management experience, myself, I know the importance many large chains try to enforce in training. I was taught, and I most certainly agree, that most consumers simply want to be heard. We don't expect free stuff to be thrown at us (though I would expect to not be required to pay for a faulty product or service), and we don't expect a lifetime membership to your brand. Many of those who take the time to actually write in to a company/brand are sitting down to write a thoughtful communication because they WANT to continue to patronize the brand/company, but see a big area for improvement. Sure, there are those who simply write in every experience, and can never be pleased- but a company that treats all of their feedback as one or the other will certainly never grow!

In particular, my concern is for big brand chains that are partially corporate owned, and partially franchised. I have noticed that many companies like this, when it comes to handling complaints or concerns in regard to franchised locations, tend to tiptoe around resolution. An example would be one very large chain pizza delivery company down the street from me. About a month back I wrote in to the corporate website, informing them of poor product quality. In particular, their boneless chicken side was grossly misproportioned, and not up to company (advertised) specifications. I promptly received an (clearly) automated response, via email, with the assigned customer service rep's name;

"Jenna,

I am really sorry to hear about the poor sizing of boneless chicken you received. We totally understand your disappointment and frustration with a _______ Pizza experience that was less than great. We appreciate you contacting us and giving us the opportunity to fix the situation. My name is Danielle and I will be happy to help resolve your issue.

The _______ location where you ordered is locally owned, so my first step is to report your concern to the owner, S___ _______h. This will give their office the opportunity to hear your feedback firsthand, and do what it takes to keep you as a loyal customer.

Jenna, your feedback is a gift and we appreciate you contacting us. Once again, I am really sorry that we let you down. If you do not hear from a local supervisor in 3 days, please contact us again so that we can make sure this is resolved for you.

Most sincerely,
Danielle"

Three days later, after not hearing from the actual location or the ______ Pizza Customer Support Team, I sent a follow up email, which was acknowledged by a Cleopatra, which was followed up 24 hours by 'Robin';

"
Jenna,

I'm sorry you had to contact us again about the poor sizing of boneless chicken you received. I apologize the local management has not contacted you to make things right. I will immediately report this again to the management of the_______ store and request they contact you as quickly as possible.

In appreciation of your business and for taking the time to bring this situation to our attention, I will be sending a gift card through the mail for your use at any Domino's Pizza store. You should receive the gift card in approximately 7-10 days.

Jenna, we hope to regain your trust. Your business is very important to us and we want to give you good reason to return as a loyal customer.

Most sincerely,

Robin
_______ Pizza Customer Care"

With an initial claim filed on March 27th, and 5 follow up inquiries on my part, I received a duplicate copy of the initial customer care response, with an inclosed $10 Gift Card, on April 10th, nearly 2 weeks later. I'd like to note I was at no time contacted directly by anyone at this local location, in regards to my concern. Additionally, the $10 GC didn't even cover my primary order (the one I had first wrote in with concerns about). I responded to the company, thanking them for their gift card, but inquired as to why I had still not heard from the branch owner. I received no follow up.

So, last night, on the heels of traumatic family events, and a very long day, I pulled out the complimentary gift card to order from the same location (literally at the end of the street we live on). I ordered the same order we 'usually' get, again, ordering the boneless chicken as I had the time before. Now, almost 4 weeks from the original incident, I picked up my order and proceeded to inspect the quality upon arrival at home. I was absolutely appalled to note, not only were the same quality concerns still present, they were this time worse! I had paid $.75 a piece for fried gristle and breading hardly larger than a quarter!

Now, here is where I am having trouble with the chain, as a whole, and it's 'customer care' breakdown. If the location's owner, or even manager had taken the time to contact me (at the company's urging, or my physical request in store), there just might have been *at least* a note on my account to handle us, as customers, with care. Instead, I immediately felt that this particular owner was, and is, making a conscious decision to stretch materials and inflate profits by serving a sub-par product to my local community. As it turns out, after submitting a follow up complaint last night, I still have the copy of my last complaint to this pizza chain (circa 8/11). Interestingly enough, upon rereading the (almost identical cookie cutter response), I have come to realize that this location is owned by the same individual who owned the location I complained about 7 months back, 2 towns over, on almost an identical concern!

"Jenna,

I am really sorry to hear about the poor customer service you've received. We totally understand your disappointment and frustration with a ______ Pizza experience that was less than great. We appreciate you contacting us and giving us the opportunity to fix the situation. My name is Joshua and I will be happy to help resolve your issue.

The _______ location where you ordered is locally owned, so my first step is to report your concern to the owner, S__ ________h. This will give their office the opportunity to hear your feedback firsthand, and do what it takes to keep you as a loyal customer.

Jenna, your feedback is a gift and we appreciate you contacting us. Once again, I am really sorry that we let you down. If you do not hear from the local owner in 3 days, please contact us again so that we can make sure this is resolved for you.

________ Pizza Customer Care Team"

After this, additional experience, and understanding, I have now resolved to stop patronizing the national chain as a whole. I understand large International companies receive many complaints and concerns, and likely have various methods of automated, or automatic aided, even outsourced, responses. Unfortunately, there has been no follow up on a personal level. I've been informed I will be receiving another $10 gift card, in the mail, I have no intention of using. The sheer principle alone, of giving the company another $4 (which would be the overages from our 'usual' order), after such a blatant lack of concern really grinds my gears. In conclusion, I am greatly disappointed to see that once trusted American brands are franchising multiple locations to people who, essentially, tear down the ethics and quality of the brand. If a company is going to partially franchise, they need to be aware and accountable for the impact those owners choices and actions will have on the image on their brands!

For every consumer who writes or directly contacts a company about a concern, there is another that simple walks away and 'blacklists' the company for their error. When a customer reaches out, that is a second chance. The way I see it, the brand can either form a lasting relationship, based on trust and earnest concern, or turn the customer off entirely. As a woman who deals with PR, and customer feedback daily, through her work and this website, I can honestly say there is no greater PR, than that of redemption. Unfortunately, after three chances, this particular company has failed. Have you noticed a favorite brand or chain being drug down by local owners? How do you handle bad service/product, how many chances do you give, before moving on?

What Daughter Says: Most consumers simply want a company to listen. Cookie cutter responses, with lack of follow through on promises made only serve to make the issue worse. There is a limit to customer loyalty, and those deserving will surely rise above their competitors in the end.

Drawception: Social Media Meets Pictionary Telephone Game

Momma Told Me: There are a million ways to get your message across, but not every way is the right one.

Do you remember playing 'Telephone' in grade school? Every Thursday in 4th Grade my teacher, Ms. Robinson, would have us 23 kids sit in a giant circle after recess. Her way of calming us down, after the sugar rushes of lunch and schoolyard, was an ever changing array of social games such as 'Heads Up 7 Up' and 'Hangman'. One of my favorite, and always most entertaining of these activities was the ring around 'Telephone' game, where one child would begin with a simple statement, on an index card, and whisper it into the ears of the child next to them. That child would then turn to the person to their right and whisper what the heard, that child doing the same, and so on, so forth until the phrase reached the last kid. Simple enough, right? Well, with no one allowed to repeat the phrase more than once, and everyone's pronunciation or interpretation varying, we'd have a crime scene of words on our hand by the end! Naturally, there were also some inherit 'trouble makers' in the mix; those with personalities that saw humor in purposely changing the entire phrase, simply for their amusement. It was a lifelong lesson about the value of clarity and 'second hand' information.

A similar principle applies to one of my favorite games, as an adult, Pictionary. I can recall many evenings glued to various free online game sites meticulously drawing given words and phrases. In a modern world, where there truly are more ways than ever to communicate, and more ways for communications to go wrong- I find these sorts of simplistic tasks to be an interesting note about our society. Just the other night my father was complaining about the values of texting, versus the pitfalls of over-communicating through texts. Have you ever tried to hold a conversation via text that was taken with the wrong tone, or out of context? I know, as a sarcastic individual, I offend many through the course of the day, simply trying to be witty. Facial expressions and tone of voice simply don't convey through typed words on a blank screen, and even that rolling 'smiley' can seem condescending at times.

So, when I caught a glimpse of a peculiar web based game, on my significant other's screen, I knew I had to investigate just what had him so transfixed. It was called Drawception: Social Picture Telephone Game. Just as it sounds this, currently Beta, online game is entirely free to play, and uses a social media platform 'login' system. This means you can connect via your Twitter or Facebook accounts for quick, hassle free, play. The concept is simple. Those with over '5' positive points can 'start' a game, by generating their own phrase or theme to guide following players. Or, you can choose to join a game, at a randomly generated point. You will either be given an image (to dictate in words), or a phrase to replicate in images. For the latter, you have roughly 9 minutes to draw your interpretation of the given words/phrase with an elementary palette and brush system. Use as little or as much time as you want, click 'submit' when you are done. A completed game has 12 slides, 6 drawings and 6 descriptions.

Once all 12 slides have been completed you can view the game in it's entirety through your home page. 'Points' are awarded through a social form of 'likes' vs 'dislikes' where each thumb up given for your description or drawing is +1, and each thumb down is -1. Sometimes you will receive no recognition at all- regardless, it is truly enjoyable to read how others interpreted your contribution, and how your contribution came to be in the first place.

Worried you can't draw? Of course some players are using mice, others trackpads (like me) and some fancy pen-pad tech device tablets. You'll find an array of simple to complex and skilled to childlike drawings, which only serves to add to the fun! Points and thumbs up aren't awarded for the complexity of the drawing, simply the effectiveness of conveying the given image or phrase. The game is still in Beta, so there are some simple features I expect to see developed in time. A stronger sense of Facebook and Twitter integration, to play with friends, or set up a group game would be nice. It's also a bit hard to track down your friends, to follow, which does tend to cut down on unfair bolstering of scores, but also detracts from the social aspect. And, last but not least, remember that the people playing will vary in age and origin, so you are sure to see everything from G-PG13 and up. Adult themes and humor do tend to arise, if something is offensive to you, however, you can report a user. Personally, I've just played 6 games so far, and can see how it is quite addicting, give it a try for yourself!

Bubbles of Love: SpiritHoods His/Hers Giveaway and Review~ 2/7

Momma Told Me: Nothing gets in the way of animal attraction.

When we're young we aspire to be many things; doctors, ballerinas, even dinosaurs. We look at the world around us and think, 'Wouldn't it be fun just to be something different for one day?' We wonder how it feels to soar through the clouds, like a majestic eagle, or what a tiger thinks just before it leaps towards it's prey. We imagine swimming in the ocean alongside a family of dolphins, feeling the warm air against our face as we dance along the surface- or just how good that sweet spot feels when we scratch our pup's favorite spot. Animals have no laws, no curfews, no bills- just instinct, the instinct to do what each and every one of them are engineered best to do. Some are companions, others are hunters, and some simply coexist peacefully without mind or care of anything else around them.

I can think of few more romantic notions than that to sport the skin of your favorite animal and run free for a single day. What would you do with one day? So many of us 'adults' grow out of the childlike wonder that fosters this rebellious notion, as we fall further into the daily grind, and mountain of responsibilities, we seem to lose touch with what life's all about; living. Sometimes I work through days and nights, until I feel a great weight upon my chest. I'll glance out the nearby window, hearing the distant birds singing, and the warm sun, streaking through branches. It's so easy to forget what we do it all for, but so hard to remember! We work to pay the bills, to feed our families, to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe; that's the way of being human, right? But what is it, truly, all for if we never take the time to live? It's a new year, full of new hope, and new opportunities- take a moment to step away from the computer, away from life. Get out and dress up with the kids, take your sweetie on an impromptu road trip, try a new recipe- get messy.

It's no secret, to my loyal fan base, one of my favorite fashion accessories (and life tools), is SpiritHoods. Possibly more valuable to me than any number of hours spent unloading on a couch in a stuffy office, SpiritHoods bring out the inner child. With a clear mission that transcends any single explanation, SpiritHoods aims to unlock unique individual experiences for each wearer. Their demographic isn't just couture addicts, quirky teenagers, or even women. The SpiritHoods range spans youth fashions to gender neutral designs worn by men. Perhaps what is most identifiable about the label, aside from the wide variety of primal inspiration, is the introduction of full length hoods with faux scarves, perfect for Winter fashion! These accessories are pieces of headgear designed to resemble a designated animal in silhouette, texture, and spirit, featuring attached mitts.

These quasi 'mitts' often include an underside with paw graphics, and pockets for the wearer to place their hands in. They're arguably more 'play' than utility, but a distinct feature of the brand, none the less. Designs like the captivating Night Owl hood solely serve to add mystique, frame the face, and keep the wearer warm (yes, people wear these just as much for function, too!) SpiritHoods animal inspirations range from Gray Wolf and Zebra to the newer Nighthawk and Red Fox. Though it's natural to gravitate towards your favorite animal, I was surprised to find myself collecting the Husky and Leopard hoods, long before my trademark panda.

SpiritHoods also aims to educate owners about the embodiment of each hood's animalistic 'spirit'. While you might love cuddly pandas, like me, the playful Kitty or even Skunk might speak to your inner animal 'spirit'. Each hood possesses defined traits for the animal it embodies, along with traits of those who would be attracted to it. Additionally, the brand's PRO BLUE initiative means 10% of all net profits, from items donning the PRO BLUE label, are donated directly to a non-profit organization benefiting the specific spirit animal! Most importantly, there are never any animals harmed to produce these stunning pieces of fashion! I have a collection of hoods, and I am constantly asked about their material base and origin. SpiritHoods are always cruelty free and made from synthetic materials, despite their impressively high quality. You may find felt based hoods at your local gas station for $20, but they don't hold a candle in comfort or durability to the original thing!

Your SpiritHoods will always arrive nestled neatly within tissue paper and with accompanying literature, ready to gift. Don't be mistaken by cheap knock offs, if it doesn't have the SpiritHoods fabric ear tag, it's not genuine! Attached to the ear, via tiny safety pin, is a fabric label and breakdown of animal traits. Made with 100% acrylic faux fur and a soft 50/50 Rayon/Linen lining, the original full length hoods are relaxed and beg to be touched. Inside the long flaps are stylish pockets, great for warming the hands or mock maulings (my personal preference). Between the two flaps, directly below the wearer's chin, is a brass or pewter toned knob for fastening the hood and styling. Occasionally I'll toss one flap over my shoulder, in shawl fashion, or criss-cross the arms, but I rather enjoy the haphazard appeal of the free moving 'arms'.

We received a Full Length Grizzly Bear (For Men) and a Full Length Panda Bear (For Women) for a photo shoot and feature during Bubbles of Love. I must say, of the Bear fashions, the brand's newest Brown Bear (Flannel), is actually my preferred. Just enough spirit, mixed with fashion, to work for your resident 'tough man'. I should also note that not all hoods are ProBlue, as, thankfully, not all the animals portrayed are in danger of extinction. My Panda Hood does, however, support the ProBlue efforts! My other half has been stealing my SpiritHoods for quite some time, despite a complaint about how 'girly' the Leopard and Husky seemed. When I asked him what might make the SpiritHoods more masculine, to him, he shared a desire for a shorter, half hood. While the half hoods have made appearances online at various times, we, Spirit Heads, will have to wait for the Spring Collection to get our hands on the newer versions.

Currently, we're still in the early, enough, stages of our relationship for an impromptu SpiritHood shoot to be a real treat. Much to our friends and family's, likely, dismay, we enjoyed frolicking in the local orchard and goofing off for an afternoon. One the hood goes on, it's hard to worry about deadlines or payments, or obligations. We're just two bears, in the wild, trying to figure out what all this 'fuss' is about. You already know I love my SpiritHoods, but it seems I've certainly converted another to the tribe! Still doe eyed enough to enjoy wearing matching outfits (yes, I just admitted that), I love to hear my Grizzly ask, "Can we wear our hoods today?" Yes, that makes me a very happy, in love, Panda indeed! Wishing you all a wonderful Valentine's, with family, friends, or loved ones.... For more on SpiritHoods, see my Review here.

What Daughter Says: SpiritHoods has an entire range of Mens styles, you just might be surprised by your other half!
