Momma Told Me: You're not going out like that!
As far back as I can remember my Pop was a 9-5 kind of guy. He works in a service industry that is driven by the installation and repairs of restaurant equipment. In general he gets up fairly early and gets off work when he is done with his last 'call' of the day. This could be 2PM, or on unfortunate days, 6-7. For the most part he has weekends and most major holidays off, and travels once a year to his company's headquarters for inventory, reviews, and general maintenance. His job requires him to keep a professional appearance, though there were always a few days the '5 'oclock shadow' came creeping in by the time his work truck pulled into our driveway. Those were usually the nights Momma had her heart set on us going 'out' to enjoy a nice family meal.
As in most families, especially those with young children and working parents, appearance is not so important when inside the home. Going 'out,' however, is an entirely different story. Teeth must be brushed, again, hair mush be sufficiently combed, and clothing must be changed. (I never did get that, though, since Pop and I always seemed to come home with new stains, but I digress.) Whenever my Pop would march through the door after those long days, to endure a surprise dinner excursion he always received 'the finger,' wagging straight towards the master bathroom, where he would be expected to shave. If only Pop had had this new tech innovation; a USB charged travel shaver, the
ShaveTech, he could have cleaned up on lunch, or before setting foot out of his truck. He could have caught Momma's finger mid-wag.
The concept of a USB charged portable shaver isn't the most advanced when one considered how many things are powered by USB these days. So why has it taken so long for someone to release an economical travel shaver for the busy young executives and dashingly debonair? When I first introduced the concept of the SahevTech to you in our 2013 tech roundup a few expressed concerns about stray hairs getting stuck in the USB port, etc. I've recently had the chance to copilot a test run, or two, with my male test subject and have some interesting insights to offer. This ShaveTech is sold in Black or White, and weighs less than a pound with a buolt in rechargeable battery that will last a solid 30 minutes off a 4 hour charge. It is charged via a flip USB adapter that will plug directly into a variety of USB devices (laptops, gaming systems, tablets, etc), or can be connected to a USB AC adapter. It is approved for carry-on luggage and had a replaceable head for heavy users.
The ShaveTech does have a 300 charge expected battery lifetime; which should last the average American male just over 2 years. This may not seem like a lot, but the device is intended for travel use, and is priced very reasonably. The unit is also covered by a 1 year warranty for wear and tear damage due to regular use or faulty parts; simply keep the proof of purchase with the box. Operation is surprisingly simple, with an on/off switch, and easy snap off foil head. The head beneath is easily maintained and cleaned with the included brush, and ShaveTech can be protected when stored in the included velvet pouch. For such a lightweight shaver we were impressed with it's ability to clear stubble efficiently, and the low noise level it emitted. I wouldn't suggest this shaver for more than 2 days growth, as it is more suited for touch ups and stubble. While it will handle thicker/longer growth, I feel the device will last much longer when used as a grooming maintenance aid and not sole shaving device.
Currently the ShaveTech is sold online at retailers such as Amazon, and in store at select retailers nationwide, the manufacturer hopes to have a complete vendor list online soon. I'll admit, I wasn't expecting much from a convenience product with such a reasonable price point, and fashionable design, but the ShaveTech has surpassed both of our expectations. This would make a great gift for any son heading off to college in the Fall, and husband running from work to dinner, or any businessman with a professional appearance to maintain. I look forward to hopefully seeing more USB grooming innovations developed soon!
