The @AirHogs Elite Helix X4 RC Copter- Or Top Secret Code For 'Way Cool'!

Momma Told Me: Anything worth learning takes time.

I know what you're thinking, it's negative 700 degrees outside (or least it feels that way), the Ice Age is imminent, and you're about to show my an outdoor toy. Surprisingly, but quite understandably, the Helix X4 Stunt Copter, by Air Hogs, is actually an indoor preferred toy. This fairly advanced RC (remote control) toy is not for the faint of heart, with impressive maneuverability and speed. Unfortunately, these aspects can be attributed to the patented lightweight body which makes it incredibly durable to crashes, but near impossible to operate with minimal air disturbance. Translation: While you can use the X4 outside, the air must be completely calm to do so.

Because the Elite X4 RC Copter is slated for ages 12+, primarily due to complexity of operation, this is one remote-controlled investment you may wish to supervise operation until it's operator gets a good grasp for the controls. But, beware, any man-children in your home are likely to become quickly addicted, and a second copter may need to be acquired! This intriguing 4-blade quad-copter runs on a staggering 8 AA batteries, or may be charged via USB cable. The remote will require the batteries, regardless of charging method, but I suggest the copter itself be charged via USB to significantly extend the life of your batteries, and increase the charging speed. If this device has any downfall, in my eyes, it's the hour charging time for 20 minutes of use- which, in truth, has been researched to be fairly comparable for units in the same price range. So, consider me just plain impatient.

What EXACTLY is an Air Hog? It's actually a diverse brand of remote-control operated flying devices. Air Hogs is a brand well known among the RC community for it's entry and mid-range devices that offer varying skill adaptation levels. The 12+ suggested Elite Helix X4 Stunt Copter was maneuvered by Sabrina (11) in about 2 charge cycles. And, by 'maneuver' we mean flown for several minutes without crashing into anything. Naturally, the goal of the X4 is to learn stunts such as stalling, 360 barrel rolls, angled turns, swoops, and more. The ability to switch between Novice and Expert flying modes greatly aids in this, as the initial setup of the controller can be intimidating. Not only can the user adjust the speed and height of the X4, but the 350 dual stick controllers allow precision turning which can be tricky at it's fast moving speeds.

Our Helix X4 took many, many, many spills during the learning phase, and never lost a peel of paint, or took a chip. I was very pleased with how durable this extremely lightweight copter was. My biggest advice is to begin operation entirely indoors where there are vaulted ceilings, or better yet in an open gym area. This little RC copter picks up height and speed fast, with minimal encouragement, and a large open space with no air disturbance will be crucial to those precious first charges where it's new user is learning to fall in love. Another aspect I found fairly 'fun' was the stealthy buzzing sound the little blade fans made during operation; while they were not overly loud, they made me crack a smile for their realistic rendering.

In all, I think the Air Hogs Elite helix X4 should be perfect for any owner with previous RC Copter experience, or otherwise teenage operators with interest and patience. This would make a great parent-kid activity, learning and mastering the multiple tricks instructed and documented on the brand's YouTube channel. Perhaps most important is the opportunity to download the instruction manual at any point (since those always seem to go missing), and a full support form from other users and company ambassadors. I'm no RC master, but, in my humble opinion, this is a very unique and durable little RC copter that is well worth the investment. (It's very addictive!)
