The HP Envy 5660 All-In-One Printer Versus Cat- #HPSmartMoms

Momma Told Me: Sometimes things work a little too good.

I have beef with HP.

We have owned our HP PhotoSmart C7250 All-Im-One Printer since 2008. That's back when 'Vista' was a thing peeps! Meanwhile, year after year, HP's releasing all these new amazing office innovations and I'm sitting here twiddling my thumbs, patiently waiting for our current printer to finally meet the electronics graveyard in the sky. But it never happened.

So I began looking for any reason, an LCD pixel beginning to flicker, microscopic streaks on photo pages, "Honey, does the printer sound like it's printing kind of funny?" any reason to retire our trusty HP for one of the new, modern, HP Envy 5660s. After all, it's bad when a company makes a product so reliable you find yourself planning for them to 'sleep with the fishes' just so you can invest in a new one! Thankfully, Truffles, our cat, has been ever so happy to oblige.
Cats and printers
About a year ago we moved out living room around. We live in a condo, so space is a at a premium and when I took a corner of the living space for my brand new desk, well, the printer had to move clear across the room. It didn't bother me much, after all, technology these days is wireless, 7 year old printer or not. Unfortunately, our printer stand now happened to be located next to the patio window, and the ever-so-stylish leopard print cat tree. And, if you own a cat, you know, anything in their space is fair game.

Not only did my printer immediately become the BEST perch in the house to soak up the sun rays, enjoy an afternoon bath, and generally glare at the inhabitants of the house from, but it served, immediately as a very large and expensive cat toy. You see, our old HP printer was a behemoth, and very loud. I'll admit, it was cute at first watching the cat scramble off the printer bed when the feed tray began winding. However, it was NOT so cute when the printer lost all ability to detect and pull paper because the try, below, was full of cat hair. Yes, Ms. Truffles liked to jam her paws in the tray whenever she saw paper moving.
Annoying as it was, I halfheartedly scolded the cat because I knew, eventually, I was going to be able to use this as leverage to invest in a new, shiny, printer. And, the day our HP Envy 5660 All-In-One Printer arrived I promptly let out a squeal, removed my new toy printer and passed the box on over to the cat who immediately moved in, I presume imagining it was a rocket ship (or whatever cats imagine when in a box). After all, every cat owner, or human parent, knows the best way to get some peace when playing with a new toy setting up a new electronic is to surrender the box. In the back of my mind 'Hallelujah' rang in multiples to a chorus of angels, it was an 'experience,' people.

Not only was my brand new printer sleek, attractive, and low maintenance (easy to set up,) but she was smart. No sooner had I hooked her up to her lifeblood than she came to life with beautifully rendered animations of simple setup procedures. Little did I know that HP Envy 5660 touch screen was the gateway to so many 'awesome' MyPrintly freebies I'd yet to discover! I was immediately relieved to find I also had exchanged a printer that took 5 cartridges for one Tri-Color and one Grayscale cartridge.

I wish I could say the ink for my new Envy 5660 is going to be as cheap or cheaper than my previous printer, but the simple fact is our old ink cartridges were pretty darn cheap. However, we went though a LOT of cartridges and, I can only imagine, wasted a fair amount of ink. With it's smart technology the Envy 5660 actually monitors the printer's ink levels and offers a one of a kind HP Instant Ink program that not only saves owners over retail costs, but ensures new cartridges are delivered to your door before you actually run out of ink! That's right- never run out of ink again!

My new printer is even great with childcare- thanks to the ever growing library of free HP Printables available directly on my printer's touch screen I can subscribe to or schedule printables ranging from recipes to coloring sheets. It's as easy as browsing the many categories of free printable content and printing immediately, or subscribing to future installments on your specified day of the week. Think of it as a magazine for your printer! While the kiddos love the range of Disney coloring sheets covering popular characters from Frozen to Madagascar, I've fallen in love with the interactive Origami and Highlights worksheets. Prefer not to hover over your printer like a stalker? Browse an even larger library of free printables from the HP Connected hub online from any internet connected device with a browser.

Of course it's great being lazy and letting someone else do the project planning, but now and then  want to get a little hands on too. Printing photos has never been easier; and that's especially important since modern smartphones have built in cameras of increasing quality. In fact, I can print photos taken on my phone, or imported from social media networks, directly from the HP ePrint device. While my Envy 5660 has all the 'standard' SD and media card slots, I don't even have to bother with them when I want to print an instant memory such as these snapshots from my recent trip to Texas.

Not only does the HP ePrint application make it easy to send images to my Envy 5660, but the printer, itself, has a secondary photo paper tray to house standard print and photo paper all at once. that's less fussing with my printer and fewer smudges on expensive photo paper! Of course I'm certain those smarties at HP know this is going to mean a LOT more photo printing in every HP Envy 5660 household- more printing, more ink and paper sales, ka-ching! I don't mind because time IS money, and my brand new Envy is saving me a whole lot of time!

So now that I've got a new printer in the family, how do I protect it from the 'untimely demise' of our last one? The Envy 5660 even has that covered, literally! While I'm sure their rigorous product testing didn't involve testing the device as a modern cat lounge, it did take into account that an exposed paper tray makes for an increased amount of dust (and fur, in our case) internally. Dust/fur/fine particles drifting into a fancy pants electronic device is NEVER a good thing, so the kind people at HP also thought of putting an easy (magnetic) cover over the paper tray. Oh, and the need to shove one's paws inside, at the outgoing paper? Our Envy 5660 is impressively quiet- so quite it hardly warrants a yawn from sleeping kitties atop. Now, if they could just find a way to use the scanner without disrupting the cat...

P.S. I know you're just dying to see what I'll be creating with my brand new printer- stay tuned this Summer for some Awesomesauce road trip printables!

What Daughter Says: Don't miss out on new tech because your old tech still works. Sometimes an upgrade needs no excuse other than to upgrade.

  1. Such a fun story about your cat and the printer. Our Cat used to scale all of our stuff as well. I am in need of a new printer as well, I'll have to look into this one.

  3. Your cat is cute! We have an old color printer, and I probably should replace it because the ink is so expensive now. Sometimes spending a little for newer technology can save money in the end.

  9. I love HP printers. I only got rid of my last one because it wasn't wireless, and I was getting tired of having to haul my laptop across the room to the table to plug it in, lol.

That's funny that it got clogged with cat hair, also!

  10. Sherpa the Farm cat loves to attack our printer every time it runs. I have to be very careful or my printables end up being shreddables. My printer sees a lot of use from Pricilla's soap business - I bought a small semi-business one to deal with her labels and packaging and it's been great but it's going on two years old now.I am sure that Truffles see herself as "quality control."

  11. This is too cute. I love that you included your cat in your review. We all know whoever lives at our house needs to be able to withstand the people and animals. My cat is so curious. She'd be all over it too. I need to get a new printer so I'll check it out.

  13. Wow. This sounds like an amazing printer. I think we need a new one soon. Ours is being flaky about communication with our network. It's become a dust collector too.
