Got Ants? Not Me! COMBAT Bait Strips Giveaway~ 5/15

***I received the below product in exchange for my honest opinion. No other compensation, nor any sponsor editorial control was given. All opinions are genuine and mine alone.
Momma Told Me: It has to be the right ant.

It's kind of ironic, or perhaps right on point, that the brand name for today's product should be COMBAT. Anyone who has ever had pesky pests invade their home or personal space knows it can certainly feel like a tactical plan is called for. I recall once, in college, I was renting a room in a very expensive multi-million dollar estate (how I got there is a story for another day). In any case, this beautiful home, with all of the amenities, was far from immune to the constant brigade of outside pests. One of my 'roommates' downstairs could often be seen carefully outlining his furniture and appliances with a 1" trail of cinnamon intended to keep ants at bay. Naturally, it seemed whenever the pest problem was under control outside, these insects were merely driven indoors, towards the people and food. As someone who's had pets as far back as she can remember, I usually lean towards natural aversions like the cinnamon trick, or spraying vinegar. But let's face it, you can't always stop an attack with flowers in guns; sometimes it takes the heavy artillery.

I've been lucky, knock on wood, that we have to this point experienced minor surges of pests indoors. When we first moved in ants seemed to trail in from the fireplace towards the pet treats and food. Later on they began coming out of, well, I don't know where, in the most peculiar spots in the bathroom. It seemed like the kitchen would be the last place they'd discover and I was quick to discourage that. Naturally, living in a condo, we tend to push the pests out towards other sources (the neighbors), and they soon return once those tenants have caught on. It seems to be an endless cycle. Clearly the key to pest prevention is total annihilation (of the nest, that is).  Unfortunately, there are many things to avoid when introducing chemical based pesticides into the home. I require a product that is ultimately effective, but also mess free for application, and easy to keep out of the range of pets and prying little fingers.
Ant Bait Strips
Recently COMBAT released a new concept of pest control to their award winning line up; Ant Killing Bait Strips. Utilizing the brand's signature gel bait, these rigid peel off sticks attach to virtually any surface, eliminating the traditional 'direct to surface' application of the pesticide. Sold with 5 strips per package, and also available in roach formula, this semi-translucent bait attracts the trails of unwanted pests, directing them to bring the bait back to the nest/queen as food. That is to say that one should not expect to find a trail of fallen ants along counters and foot-boards; Combat aims to poison the production of new pests through slow released transit.
As a Purex Insider I received a package of NEW Combat Ant Bait Strips to test out in our own home. Unfortunately (depending how you look at it), I haven't seen the little buggers surface in a month or so, so efficacy is hard to determine. I do, however, have some input and thoughts regarding the design and use of this new product. The 'strips' some in an easy to snap apart brick, with a small peel tab designed to reveal the adhesive on it's back. Directions suggest peeling the adhesive tab, then the activate strip (which is essentially just a cover for the pesticide). It would be my advice not to affix the stick then peel, and to handle the strips in a contained area such as a sink. When I first peeled back the 'activate strip' to reveal the gel pesticide some droplets sprung up at me and went flying all over my counters. I had a brief moment of panic as I tried to sanitize the area and locate any stray poison. Needless to say, future applications where much more contained and monitored.
Unfortunately, because I did notice the gel 'springing' from the strip chamber, I was a bit hesitant about placing it upside down, or even diagonal, anywhere where food or pets may come across it. I'm not sure if changes in temperature might cause it to drip, but I wasn't about to find out. I settled on placing a strip under each of our household sinks, behind cabinet doors, and between the stove and the cabinets. In all, I like the concept much more than traditional gel tubes, which can be messy and certainly hard to contain. I think the adhesive strip makes fighting pests out of the reach of kids and pets much more practical and look forward to a continued pest-free home for several months to come. Like most new Purex Insiders product launches, this one comes with a $1000 cash sweepstakes and free product giveaway, so be sure to head on over and enter now. Want to give it a try in your home? My Bathroom Lament: Mildew + New Soft Scrub Giveaway~ 5/6

mold mildew
Momma Told Me: That's going to take some elbow grease.

Mildew. Even the sound reminds me of a menacing cartoon germ, cackling as it spreads bacteria. In fact, it is actually a form of mold; therefor Mold and Mildew is a bit redundant, but certainly gets the point across. I was raised in a 2 bedroom condo, a tad bigger than the one I live in today. Condominiums are great for starter homes and 20-somethings, who don't necessarily need the land and space of those with growing families. That being said, there is a space issue that impacts the design of various amenities; one big one being the restroom. Our rather small, single, bathroom has no automated venting system and only a 3' x 2' window (which opens to half that area) to allow for manual ventilation. This may not seem like a big deal if you enjoy cold showers, or take baths, but we're a 'hot water' loving family, and that means plenty of steam. Steam, of course, causes precipitation and the accumulation of moisture on everything from bathroom walls to shower fixtures. This causes mold/mildew, and is exceptionally hard to fight once it's begun to build.
mold mildew
I've shared before my attachment to the Soft Scrub brand; it was the first cleanser Momma placed in my hands before patting my bum and shuffling me towards the guest bathroom. Original, classic as I call it, Soft Scrub is a very dense and gritty paste that effectively scrubs stains and build up off a variety of surfaces. Of course, through the years, the modern consumer has demanded variants of this powerful formula that would offer added convenience in distribution and efficacy. Some projects are not suitable for bleach, while others demand the stain fighting power. Cleaning the toilet requires a bottle that can dispense product upside down, while more delicate surfaces need a powerful 'scrub free' formula. Soft Scrub has successfully addressed all of these needs and more with their constantly expanding range of cleansers, so it's no surprise there's a brand new Mold and Mildew Stain Remover product hitting shelves.
No matter how much I try to vent the bathroom during showers the other half and I usually bathe back to back, and the accumulation of moisture is inevitable. I used to be better about wiping down the fixtures after showering, but have slacked quite a bit lately. And that doesn't stop mildew from building on the bottom of our shower liner! Soft Scrub Mold and Mildew promises no harsh fumes or over spray and functions as a gel to cling to stains and mildew for the cleaning of tile, grout, tubs, showers, and more. As a Purex Insider I got a chance to test out this new product before it officially hit shelves (expect to find Purex Mold and Mildew at your local WalMart and Safeway chains nationwide). The bottle has a lovely aqua color that, to me, screams 'gel', and an ergonomic neck with spray handle. The 'stream' setting is a very unique combination of spray vs stream and does not 'fan out' to the sides or blow back as some other dispensers tend to. This makes it much safer for cleaning in small spaces, with minimal, if any, fumes.
So how did it stack up? I was honestly quite impressed with this formulations ability to break down the grime and build up without any additional scrubbing. It was as simple as spray and wipe/rinse. My first attempt I let it sit about 60 seconds before rinsing; though I could visibly see the mildew breaking down while I waited. I've since realized hardly any waiting is necessary. For larger stains one might want to gently distribute the Soft Scrub around the entire surface and allow it to sit for a moment, but my fixtures rinsed spotless in just a few moments. When it comes down to brass tacks, Soft Scrub Mold and Mildew is a hit in my mind for it's lack of harsh fumes and targeted distribution. Instead of vaporizing, the thicker gel clings and goes to work immediately to fight tough build up and stains. I will certainly keeping a bottle on hand in our house!

Like most Purex Insiders campaigns, this product launch comes with a brand sweepstakes. Head on over here and get entered for your shot at $1000 or free Soft Scrub product!

Soft Scrub 4-In-1 Toilet Care System Review + Giveaway~ 5/1

Momma Told Me: Cleaning the toilet is just a fact of life.

Out of all the household chores cleaning the bathroom, specifically the toilet, is the one I loathe most. It's ironic, really, as that was the very first chore I was tasked with during my childhood. Before I was permitted to push a vacuum, or flourish a duster I was taught how to scrub the porcelain throne until it glistened. I couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 when Momma first thrust that white and yellow Soft Scrub bottle in my hand, and with a damp scour sponge, instructed me to get to work. There was some whining on my part about how I needed gloves (I'm sure I had a romantic notion of household chores being more glamorous with an elbow length pair of yellow rubber gloves), and Momma was quick to cease whining with a threat to pull my allowance (all $3 of it). Yes, it seems Momma disliked cleaning the toilet just as much as me; unfortunately at 1/6 of her size and fraction of her age, I was outranked on the matter.
When the Purex Insiders gave me an opportunity to try the newest product in the Soft Scrub range, 4-In-1 Toilet Care, I was eager to sample any product that promised to prolong my bowl's freshness between cleanings. In our household Jay avoids touching the toilet much like his profuse aversion to raw poultry. It's funny, as I'd wager 70%+ of the 'mess' is thanks to him! And, ladies can identify, I am consistently in awe at the status of my toilet seat when I go to scrub that bowl. One would think the men who touch the seat daily, in order to use the toilet, would be the most concerned with what lies beneath! In any case the new 4-In-1 Toilet Care product promises to keep our hands out of the bowl longer, and costs less than $2 at the local grocer. Much like traditional gel press-ons, or bowl drop-ins, Soft Scrub 4-In-1 continually treats the bowl and water with each flush.

While the product may look a little alien at first, these 4 slowly eroding balls of cleanser utilize your toilet's natural whirlpool, flushing, action to distribute the cleanser/deodorizer and effectively fight buildup. If you've ever fought to keep away those nasty toilet bowl rings, you understand the importance of having flush activated cleansers. This nifty cleaning device hangs over your toilet bowl's edge, somewhat awkwardly (it could fit better, but does the job), and is sold in two varieties, with and without bleach. I'm actually quite amazed how long the eroding cleanser has lasted, with a promised lifespan of 4 weeks, as it seems to dissolve very slowly over time.
The two varieties also offer different scents, the Bleach being my preferred Alpine Fresh, while the original is a more floral Sapphire Waters. When I initially installed the 4-In-1 Toilet Care I intentionally did so between cleanings to see if the product would actually wear away at the existing buildup over time. To me this was a bigger test than  the discouragement of new buildup. The answer was yes, it did, in fact, break up existing stains and gunk from under the rim of our toilet bowl. Within a week the bowl seemed brighter and cleaner, without ever having touched a sponge to the bowl! Of course this product is not intended as a hands free sanitation solution, but merely to extend the cleanliness of one's toilet between cleanings. While it's good to have some proof of the powerful cleansing action, we have resumed our regular cleaning schedule. Right now I prefer this system to traditional toilet tank cakes, but am unsure whether they perform better than the competitors gel press-ons. Only time will tell!

Naturally, like most Purex Insiders product launches, there is a great sweepstakes being hosted, in order to promote the new Soft Scrub 4-In-1 Toilet Care product. Head on over here to get entered in the Brighter Bowl Sweepstakes where one grand prize winner will claim $1000! Entries are valid daily now through April 26, 2013, so be sure to stop in every day to maximize your odds!

Dial Kids Body + Hair Wash Review and Giveaway~ 4/27

Momma Told Me: "Squeaky Clean"

By now my loyal readers have already heard the tale of how I got my first bowl cut; but I will briefly review the story for those who are new. Essentially, I hated to wash my hair as a child. I disliked drying it equally as much (Momma would always insist I'd catch a cold if I didn't), though there was something about the scrubbing and the rinsing I detested. Perhaps when I was just a little younger I'd had a bad experience with shampoo in my eyes, or maybe I simple didn't care for the Head and Shoulders that my parents insisted we all use. By the age of 6 or 7 I had beautiful golden blonde hair down to my butt. And then one day, I did not. I never believed Momma would make good on her threats to 'chop it all off,' should I not improve my personal hygiene, but she certainly did. I was devastated, and it was a lesson well learned; perhaps if I'd had a fun, child friendly shampoo on hand in the shower the lesson would have never been necessary.
Sabrina, 10, exhibits the same hesitancy to properly cleanse her own long, and very thick, hair. She has worked out, neigh, negotiated, an every other day schedule to wash it. Even at that it is sometimes a battle to ensure root to tip is cleaned and rinsed properly. As a pre-teen, at 10, it is especially important she develops those personal guidelines for cleanliness and presentation. Classmates can be especially cruel at this age, and it would be a shame to see her gorgeous locks compromised by poor grooming habits. Naturally Sabrina and I have different opinions as to what is important when choosing bath time products. When shopping she is drawn to colorful products with fun gimmicks and scents. What I look for are safe formulas gentle enough for developing skin, and products that will simplify the bathing process to encourage detailed cleansing.

You may not realize the Dial brand has been leading trusted skincare products for over 60 years. The other half refuses to use anything other than their Dial Gold Bar line, which he was raised with, and I have a few of the brand's products in the bath as well. Their new Coconut Water Body Wash has quickly become a favorite for it's nourishing coconut water infusion that keeps the fragrance gender neutral, yet the results rich and moisturizing. Developed with Pediatric Dermatologists, the new Dial Kids range of Body + Hair Washes aims to simplify bath time and protect delicate skin all at once. That's right, these 3 specially formulated scents, Peachy Clean (ages 2+), Watery Melon, and Berry Cool (ages 6+) are suitable for cleansing body and hair. When less products are involved in the bathing process kids are more likely to adapt regular cleansing rituals.
As part of the Purex Insiders we received a bottle of new Dial Kids Body + Hair Wash in Watery Melon. I didn't have to tell Sabrina this product was for her, the bright lime green bottle and hot pink cap had her name written all over it. I was surprised to see her light up over such a mundane product (body and hair wash). She proceeded to pop the extra wide, easy flip, cap and inhale. A smile crossed her face and her eyes grew wide, "This smells just like watermelon! Is it for me?!" I couldn't help but chuckle at the enthusiasm, it seemed no one would have to coax her to take her shower that night. She was furthermore excited to learn that she could use the formula for her entire shower ritual; though we did have a brief discussion about proper portioning, and making the product last. Funny how children either avoid things like the plague, or go overboard and use them in excess, right?

In any case, our experience with the new Dial Kids range has been very positive. Sabrina has already asked me what other scents (she calls it a flavor because it's fruity), the other bottles come in. I like how the product leaves a very subtle scent behind, post bathing, and no residue on the skin or hair. The Dial Kids range is tear free, hypoallergenic, free of artificial dyes or parabens, and Ph balanced; that's more than I can say for most of the products I use! This range of products is currently on shelves nationwide at a variety of major grocery retailers. Like most Purex branded reviews, this one comes with a giveaway and a chance to win big in their promotional sweepstakes. Head on over here to enter to win free product, or the $1000 grand prize; entries valid now through April 26, 2013.

What Daughter Says: Sometimes the best way to encourage proper hygiene in children is to provide kid friendly products.

New @Purex Glitter Beta Test Drive And Giveaway

Momma Told Me: Life is magical, but not like that.

I recall, once, as a little girl, I thought I'd had a stroke of brilliance. The stacked washer and dryer in our condominium happened to be immediately outside my own bedroom. Momma and I had just finished one of our Summertime craft projects, involving tie dye t-shirts and pillow cases, and I was in a particularly creative mood. I'd snuck into the kitchen the night before and confiscated a package of food dyes from the baking cupboard (the lesson for Mom's being to hide that stuff HIGH out of reach). In my mind I was about to create an entire magical wardrobe of star-burst underwear and rainbow jeans. When Momma began her afternoon load, just after tucking me in for nap time, I pulled out the hidden food colors and dropped several drips of each color into the filling washer. As it turns out, my father was not so keen to sport the resulting purple-grey hue on his previously tighty whities, and Momma would never again be so lackluster about child locks on the laundry machines!
I've admitted this deed because I was recently asked if I would be willing to beta test a new Purex concept, as part of the Purex Insiders; Purex Glitter. When the email first came across my desktop I was instantly transformed to the very serious conversation Momma had sat me down for, post the tye-dye laundry incident. "You can't just pour glitter into the laundry machine and have the clothes come out sparkling!" she'd used as an example, followed by stern points about how the laundry machines were not 'play things' and very expensive 'appliances.' So, imagine my wonderment when I agreed to the beta/market testing and this highly top secret Purex project landed on my doorstep, complete with sparkling lid. Of course, as an adult, Momma's skepticism was ringing in my head. On many levels it sounded like a very cool, but ultimately impractical concept.

Like all of my Purex product tests, Purex Glitter included a basic PR fact sheet that assured me the 'glitter' agent used to transform laundry is 100% natural and safe for HE and traditional laundry units. The press release claims that the glitter adheres to the fibers, and any remnants in the wash will rinse out with the rinse cycle; rather than linger in the bottom of your machine. Of course, using this unique Glitter detergent means separate loads for him and her, and having an entirely clean washer (glitter free) is essential, as the other half would not care much for sparkly clothing. I was skeptical of how this would perform, and even more hesitant to run the test detergent through our communal washing machine, but found the glitter in the detergent to be much more fine and covert than the bold graphics and glitter cap had lead me to expect. Purex Glitter detergent proved to be more of a 'shimmer' for me, when inspecting the liquid detergent in natural light. You can see the very mild glitter shimmer above.

Purex Insiders: Soft Scrub Total All Purpose W/ Giveaway~ 3/11

Momma Told Me: Clean the bathroom!

It's funny, the things I can relate to; when I receive a product for editorial consideration. Sure, there are only so many things I can say about candles, or another purse- but is it odd that I see bottle of Soft Scrub and am instantly taken back to vivid childhood memories? Sure, cleaning supplies are not the most glamorous of products; but, considering how much I spend on them annually, a valuable aspect of home living, none the less. I learned, at a young age, cleaning supplies was not the area o one's budget to cut corners. Not all brands are created alike, nor as effective as the next. The secret to a valuable cleaning aid? If has to perform multiple functions within one's home. No, I'm not talking about a vacuum that dispenses fresh roast coffee, I'm referring to a cleanser that is touch enough for your harshest stains and buildup, yet gentle enough for multi-room use. A great cleaning brand always has a comprehensive range of products, while still relying on it's original formula for timeless function.

After I'd mastered the vacuum, Momma was quick to put me on 'bathroom duty'. If I ever questioned why, without jest, her precise reasoning was, "My mother used to make me clean the bathrooms, and I hated it. Now you get to do it too!" While I'm sure noone enjoys cleaning a bathroom, I particularly despised the chore, myself. The object that garnered the most hatred, however, was the slender white bottle (complete with yellow cap) of original Soft Scrub. Momma's a frugal woman, but she had the sense to know the same formula she had used since 1976 was the absolute best for the job. The unique texture of Original Soft Scrub (with Lemon scent) is what always stood out most in my mind. This white paste (similar to toothpaste) was very gritty, making it tough on the harshest mildew buildup, and stains. Momma just loved making me scrub the grout until it was bright white again!
Soft Scrub is also known for being extremely gentle on the surfaces it cleans. Minimizing wear on gentle enamels and protective barriers, while still removing stains and bacteria is a major selling point for the brand. When they recently released a new, foaming, spray version of their product I was happy to put the collection to the test in my own home. Featuring a modern, revamped, facelift, the bottles offer a stream or foam dispense option and even function upside down for hard to reach nooks and crannies (and even toilets). Soft Scrub Total (All Purpose) is sold in Lemon Scent All Purpose, Fresh Scent Bath and Bowl, and With Bleach. This range is intended to clean multiple surfaces throughout one's home, with the trusted power, yet gentle effects, of classic Soft Scrub. For 2013 the trusted cleansing brand has reformulated their classic formula for extended cleaning power, featuring a new bottle design and cap for easier dispensing. The new product, called Soft Scrub Total All Purpose, is intended to tackle your toughest stains from bathroom to kitchen, and is entirely bleach free.

I'll admit, I, personally, rely on Scrubbing Bubbles in my bathroom, where I find the toughest stains and buildup to occur. In all honesty, I have to eat my words- Soft Scrub Total All Purpose exceeded my every expectation. Even without the foaming action of Scrubbing Bubbles, Total All Purpose is just as tough on the water spots and grime that builds in crevices, in most cases working faster than the leading competitor brand. Not only that, but my faucet sparkled after just one application; and the product was so easy to rinse and remove with a basic sponge, no scour pad needed! Soft Scrub Total has taken the 'scrub' out of my chores, and placed all the work on the innovative formula with targeted foam/spray. With the ergonomic design and powerful foaming action, I daresay I would have enjoyed my chores more, as a kid, if this version of Soft Scrub were around!
Just look at how my kitchen sink sparkles after a simple rinse down with the new and improved Soft Scrub Total All Purpose formula. This formula is thick, like traditional Soft Scrub, with a Lemon Fresh Scent. It distributes evenly through the wide mouth cap, and is a great example of 'a little goes a long way.' I especially love the light citrus odor, that also aids my garbage disposal as run off clears the sink, and how the stainless steel surface has no residue after rinsing. I've also used this new formula on the bath tub, outdoor patio furniture, and oil stains in the garage, it truly is a versatile 'total' cleansing product!

As a Purex Insider I received the new formula to test out in my own home, but you don't need to be an Insider to win your own. To kick off the launch of Soft Scrub Total All Purpose the brand is sponsoring a Sweepstakes where one lucky winner will score $1000 in Soft Scrub products, and 250 runners up will receive a voucher for free Soft Scrub. Feel the Breeze? New @HBOats Tropical Blends Is Here! Giveaway~ 3/5

Momma Told Me: Cereal is for kids.

When you're a child the concept of cereal is associated with cartoon characters and decoder rings nestled at the bottom of translucent bags. We wake up on school days and plop ourselves down at the table or nook to reach for that brightly colored cardboard box full of sugar grain puffs and marshmallows. 'Breakfast' is like morning dessert, as children we only care that it is a quick and sweet treat before beginning the day's grind at school. For me, that's where my bad habit of forgoing breakfast began. Once I felt I'd outgrown childhood cereals I quickly fell into a sway that involved skipping breakfast all together. Most experts will tell you that's a slippery slope; breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Not only should it be weighted higher (than other meals) in calories, but is necessary to provide the nutrients that fuel us through the day and keep us full until our equally rushed lunch breaks. And eating cereal for breakfast just doesn't seem like the 'adult' thing to do.
That's precisely why any child over 5 can easily identify what is casually known as an 'adult' cereal. These usually consist of plain white boxes full of photos of fruit, with nutritional claims in banners across the bottom. But 'adult' cereal doesn't have to be a high fiber compound of compressed oats and void of any flavor. In fact, Post's range of Honey Bunches of Oats has widely been recognized by fans as one of the most flavorful selections among 'sensible cereal'. And the new Tropical Blends flavor is no exception; packaged in a vibrant box of beachy hues, this breakfast cereal will inspire a "party in your mouth" (and that's a direct quote from the other half). Blending trademark Crispy Honey Bunches of Outs Flakes with a tropical Mango flavor, and Coconut Flavored Granola Clusters makes for a textural experience that is anything but boring or bland. Each serving weighs in with 10g of Whole Grain and 9 Essential Vitamins and Minerals, while still coming in below the leading brand of 'adult' cereal (Honey Nut Cheerios) with 2g less of sugar! The Tropical Blends variety is heart healthy and filling; tested here to a proclamation that just a bowl "Just may be the most enjoyable bowl of cereal I have ever had."
As part of the General Mills brand, Honey Bunches of Oats Tropical Blends is a participating title in the Labels for Education program which donates a portion of money back to schools. But that's not the only reason to hunt down a box of this new blend; The Purex® brand is teaming up with Honey Bunches of Oats and Outrigger Hotels and Resorts to launch a monumental prize giveaway: The 2013 Tropical Trio Sweepstakes! That's right, Purex has a brand new scent in their Natural Elements Liquid Detergent; Tropical Blast, and they're teaming up to offer an amazing prize in hopes of spreading the word. In addition to a Grand Prize that will send one lucky entrant on a tropical paradise vacation to Outrigger Waikiki, 5 First Place winners will enjoy a year's supply of Tropical Purex and Honey Bunches! 100 Second Place winners will also receive coupons good for free Purex and Honey Bunches product, so don't hesitate to head on over and enter TODAY, and look for the new Honey Bunches variety on shelves in a store near you!
