Momma Told Me: Life is magical, but not like that.
I recall, once, as a little girl, I thought I'd had a stroke of brilliance. The stacked washer and dryer in our condominium happened to be immediately outside my own bedroom. Momma and I had just finished one of our Summertime craft projects, involving tie dye t-shirts and pillow cases, and I was in a particularly creative mood. I'd snuck into the kitchen the night before and confiscated a package of food dyes from the baking cupboard (the lesson for Mom's being to hide that stuff HIGH out of reach). In my mind I was about to create an entire magical wardrobe of star-burst underwear and rainbow jeans. When Momma began her afternoon load, just after tucking me in for nap time, I pulled out the hidden food colors and dropped several drips of each color into the filling washer. As it turns out, my father was not so keen to sport the resulting purple-grey hue on his previously tighty whities, and Momma would never again be so lackluster about child locks on the laundry machines!
I've admitted this deed because I was recently asked if I would be willing to beta test a new Purex concept, as part of the Purex Insiders; Purex Glitter. When the email first came across my desktop I was instantly transformed to the very serious conversation Momma had sat me down for, post the tye-dye laundry incident. "You can't just pour glitter into the laundry machine and have the clothes come out sparkling!" she'd used as an example, followed by stern points about how the laundry machines were not 'play things' and very expensive 'appliances.' So, imagine my wonderment when I agreed to the beta/market testing and this highly top secret Purex project landed on my doorstep, complete with sparkling lid. Of course, as an adult, Momma's skepticism was ringing in my head. On many levels it sounded like a very cool, but ultimately impractical concept.
Like all of my Purex product tests, Purex Glitter included a basic PR fact sheet that assured me the 'glitter' agent used to transform laundry is 100% natural and safe for HE and traditional laundry units. The press release claims that the glitter adheres to the fibers, and any remnants in the wash will rinse out with the rinse cycle; rather than linger in the bottom of your machine. Of course, using this unique Glitter detergent means separate loads for him and her, and having an entirely clean washer (glitter free) is essential, as the other half would not care much for sparkly clothing. I was skeptical of how this would perform, and even more hesitant to run the test detergent through our communal washing machine, but found the glitter in the detergent to be much more fine and covert than the bold graphics and glitter cap had lead me to expect. Purex Glitter detergent proved to be more of a 'shimmer' for me, when inspecting the liquid detergent in natural light. You can see the very mild glitter shimmer above.
After having run 2 loads now with Purex Glitter detergent I'm fairly surprised with how well the detergent performs as a physical cleanser and stain fighter, in addition to the near undetectable effects on our washer. That is to say the stains on clothing are gone, and the washer tub is 99% glitter free after a wash. However, I've noticed that the glitter which claims to 'bond to the threads' is a little looser than advertised (as one might expect). When I dry the Glitter Purex treated laundry I notice some of the sparkle does come out, collecting in the lint trap. Because the glitter is so fine in nature, and subtle, I don't foresee any complications with either machine; however, I'm uncertain as of yet how well the glitter will adhere over time in storage. The detergent itself is actually quite similar to the recent Purex Crystals release, light blue in tint and has a soft floral fragrance.
In all, Purex Glitter is a very unique and innovate concept I could find several uses for with costumes and cheer-leading outfits. I'm not necessarily sold on the 'natural' composition, and that I would use this on the pet's or baby's bedding/clothes, but am excited to have a bottle on hand for crafting and various cloth projects. Purex Glitter is in market testing phases and currently only available in large metropolitan area, but the brand is optimistic the range will soon be sold nationwide at a Walmart near you. And, of course, there is an exciting Purex Glitter sweepstakes in the works as well.
What Daughter Says: Purex Glitter is an innovating product that promises to turn heads and add some extra sparkle to everyday life!

ReplyDeletelilypaddj3 at gmail dot com
haha very funny! noo
ReplyDeleteI think this would be a great novelty thing for little girls but not sure how useful it would be overall.
ReplyDeleteI hope this isn't real but people sure do love glitter. I work in a craft store and around Christmas time, it's like I already wash my clothes in this...and then when I come home, there's glitter on everything else.
ReplyDeleteI would try it for occasions such as Halloween but probably not every day.
ReplyDeleteI, too, thought this was a joke when I saw something about it two days ago...the day BEFORE April Fools Day. I kinda don't think it's a joke, though. I'm interested in it, but it also seems a little silly and, as you say, impractical. But I'd give it a go! I love sparkles. :)

I wouldn't use it because I wouldn't want to wash my daughter's clothes separately. More wash does not sound like fun to me. BUT, I bet my five year old would love being extra glittery!
