Momma Told Me: With a little creativity any supplies can be made magical.

In the guise of genetics I was born with a disposition for weak knees- as a result, at 11, my left knee went out while washing some dishes in the kitchen. I landed on said knee, tearing the meniscus, and ending up in a full foot to thigh sot cast for several months. What does this story have to do with Halloween? Well, being at that tween age, on the cusp of no longer caring about childish holiday traditions, and them being the only thing of importance in the world- that is the Halloween in my life that stands out the most.
I remember for months I sulked and pouted, upset about my circumstances, and 'rightfully' taking it out on my parental units. Whenever Momma would ask what I wanted to be for Halloween that year I'd furrow my brow and clench my mouth. I wanted absolutely nothing to do with Halloween- it was 'ruined'- my adolescent mind had decided.

That is, of course, right up until 5 days before the actual holiday, when the excitement of friends making plans, and the street full of haunted decorations began to finally break me down. All of a sudden I was no longer upset that my knee has ruined the holiday, but that I had. I remember one day plopping into our minivan in tears and, with very little prodding, divulging to my mother how I so very badly wanted to trick-or-treating, and how everything was ruined because I had no costume, and a bum leg.

Of course Momma was determined to teach me a lesson of never giving up. And, while our Halloween eve's are often in the 80-90s, and she truly had no desire to follow me door to door- she knew that likely would be one of my last childhood chances to truly get out and enjoy the holiday as a kid.

The following day I opened our front door to see our dining room counter sprawled with crafting supplies- a grass skirt, a carved bamboo stick, and lots of colorful fake feathers. In just a few hours, while I had been at school, that day she had created an entire costume literally from a few things we'd had laying around the house. Even better- my 'witch doctor' costume would help hide the hideous grey soft cast I'd been so self conscious of lugging around. And the homemade apple 'shrunken heads' would even dangle nicely from my crutches.

Yes, Momma taught me several great lessons that Halloween- but my favorite is that holiday magic happens, truly, with just a little bit of imagination. You don't need to spend a ton of money, or time, to have a wicked god time, and today I'm sharing a little bit of that spirit with you. If you have some old candy cauldrons or plastic jars rattling around, some marshmallows and candy melts, a few Celebration by Frey™ and/or Sixlets® bags are all it takes to whip up some spooky sweet treats for entertaining this Halloween.

(You'll even find delightfully spooky gumball eyeballs for seasonal characters and chilling creations!) These products are often found in the baking aisle at your local Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Wegman's or more- the selection and colors change seasonally, so I always stop by to see what's new.

Sixlets chocolate candies are one of my favorite choices for cake decorating and seasonal treats- I've essentially combined different shapes and sizes of Celebration by Frey™ confection and Sixlets® in 2 frightfully easy party favor creations- Witch's Cauldrons and Spider Egg Vials. With our FREE Printable above any age an whip these up. Add some seasonal ribbon, fun decorative brooms, and gumball eyeballs for a really wicked treat.

Sixlets are also my go to because they offer a vibrant pop of color at an affordable price- and are especially fun for playing with texture- Just check out my simple Frankenstein bark, below. All you need are some green chocolate melts, lime green Sixlets chocolatey candy 'boils', a red glitter 'blood' candy writer, eyeball gumballs, and any other fun sprinkle additions you feel fit the mood.

It may look a little silly at first, but this bark will break up into delightful fractured treats with a real 'stitched' vibe! I also used black Sixlets and some melted chocolate to create little 'bolts' for an extra dash of character. The swirls in the chocolate will even give your bark a rippled 'skin' texture that is ghoulishly fun!
Frankenstein Bark- These #CelebrationSpookyTreats can be made in minutes with these free and fun printables and some Sixlets! #AD
The Frankenstein bark is literally as simple as melting chocolate and pouring it into a parchment paper lined baking sheet or pan- then liberally apply sprinkles, Sixlets, and other decorations as the artistic mood strikes. Send the pan to the freezer for about 10 minutes, then break apart into chunks of various sizes.
Our final spooky selection involves all of those leftover marshmallows you inevitably have laying around after all those Summer S'mores events. Using some cake pop sticks, pierce jumbo marshmallows in the center, to create a standing 'pop', then take a pretzel stick and run it through the center horizontally to make 'arms'. Dip your treat in a bowl of melted white chocolate and place the an orange Sixlets at the nook where arm meets marshmallow. Set upright on a baking sheet and place in the fridge for 10-15 minutes to set.
These 'boo' ghost pops are much easier to make than traditional cake pops, and lighter to enjoy among a giant Halloween spread. Use a food grade marker to decorate your orange Sixlets with a pumpkin face, and to add eyes to your ghosts for some frightfully fun final touches.
These #SpookyCelebrationTreats can be made in minutes with these free and fun printables and some Sixlets! #AD
I whipped up this entire Halloween spread in about 90 minutes- Momma may have spent a little more time on that infamous last minute costume, but the sentiment remains the same. Holidays are meant to be fun, and delicious- you shouldn't have to shell out all of your hard earned cash, or time, to celebrate them. Celebration by Frey™ and Sixlets® are just two of my secrets for Halloween entertaining success.

What Daughter Says: You don't have to be a Martha Stewart to pull off a fun Halloween spread, just use a little imagination!

What makes a timeless treat?

The ability to be transformed by any flavor creation and still be an iconic favorite that everyone loves.

When it comes to cookies OREO cookies have always been, hands down, a family favorite. I think, if for nothing else, due to the fact that they are just so much fun to eat. Surely you've had the debate at some point in your life- twist, dunk, nibble, bite? How to best enjoy an OREO cookie is something that the masses will probably never agree on.

Me? Well, personally, I prefer to twist and eat the crème filling out of the center then pop the two sandwich cookie ends back  together and munch as a whole. Of course the newer OREO Thins cookies have totally rocked my OREO world. With their thinner crispier cookie I enjoy the crunch and the crème filling all together!
https://ooh.li/f0305d9
So, if you're here, we can agree that OREO cookies are awesome.

Every time I walk past a display or the snack aisle a package or two 'falls' into my cart.

But did you know you can discover several of 30 OREO cookie varieties sold  at your local Walmart? For the true OREO cookie aficionado Walmart is most definitely the place to go.

For example, stop and take a moment now to name all of the OREO cookie varieties you can think of.

Are you ready?

I bet you got the basics- OREO Double Stuf, OREO Golden, OREO Chocolate, OREO Mint, OREO Thins.....but did you know there's a unique breed of OREO cookie with 3 cookie layers called the Triple Double OREO? Or that special limited edition flavors such as Blueberry Pie, Fireworks (with popping candies), Swedish Fish, and Lemon Crème have graced the shelves? Or that Birthday Cake and Red Velvet have become semi-permanent flavors among the rows of OREO cookie flavors at Walmart?
Okay, so you knew about some of those- but what about Jelly Donut?

Have you seen the new limited edition Golden OREO flavors featuring a special vanilla crème filling with a flavored center? As OREO super fans we simply HAD to pick up a package of Jelly Donut and Waffles and Syrup OREO cookies. We're no stranger to the more bizarre OREO cookie flavors- they are the best to share. Consider them just like Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Jelly Beans.

Heck, we even find ourselves hooked on some of these less traditional ones!
https://ooh.li/f0305d9
I saw 'we' as in me- Jay's kind of boring. He likes his OREO cookies Thin and Minty.

I'm always the one letting out a squeal and a jump when a new OREO package catches my eye as he loads 2-3 packages of classic Double Stuf into the cart. Hey, that's fine, I don't like sharing my OREO cookies anyway!
While some of you are thinking that OREO cookies are a classic and should remain just that- a chocolate sandwich cookie with a vanilla crème filling, I bet the rest of you are now thinking "I wonder if a _______ OREO cookie has ever been made." Well, the answer is- many special and limited edition OREO cookies have been released throughout the years. Especially when one considers International markets and distribution. HOWEVER OREO is challenging their fans to submit their dream OREO flavor creation in hopes of discovering the next BIG OREO cookie flavor.

They're even willing to put their money where their mouth, erm package?, is with a $500k cash prize on the line.

https://ooh.li/f0305d9
Don't have a wild and crazy new OREO flavor? No problem!

Your OREO creation might be something new incorporating the OREO cookies/flavor such as pancake mix, fudge pops, or your favorite type of cereal. The sky's the limit so peel back the top of a package of OREO cookies and start brainstorming. After all no genius ideas ever came to anyone on an empty stomach.
My OREO creation idea?

Well I was sad to hear I was not the first to think of it- but happy to know there are other OREO fans out there bold enough to suggest it.

I'd love to try Maple Bacon OREO cookies.

Before you curl your nose up at the idea remember Swedish Fish OREO cookies were a real thing. And if that can be something people actually bought and ate then Maple Bacon OREO cookies aren't so impossible.
At first I thought my OREO creation would be best with a Golden OREO cookie format, then I was reminded of my favorite bacon creation- Maple Bacon Dark Chocolate Cake. Bingo! Chocolate OREO cookies it has to be! The best of both worlds, sweet and savory with the light bitterness of cocoa from the chocolate. Don't worry I'm not suggesting any real bacon (such as bits) is put in there.

It's #NationalPiDay- Make A Delicious #EdwardsPieceOffering With Our Printable!

This post is sponsored by Edwards Desserts, but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.
Make 'piece' this Pi Day with an #EdwardsPieceOffering! #AD https://ooh.li/9411fda
Momma Told Me: Just kiss and make up!

The older you get the less sparkly some of the major holidays seem. That, my friends, is why we have national 'day of' celebrations- to spice up the otherwise dull periods between traditional, over-commercialized, holidays. Today, March 14th, is one of those days. Yes, magnificent Pi Day, appropriately assigned for it's semblance to the mathematical number 'Pi', which begins 3.14. Or, if you're a lush like me, it's just a good excuse to eat tons of pie and make 'punny' jokes all day. However, this year, I'm changing things up a little and taking my Pi day theme to a whole new level with an Edwards 'Piece' Offering.
That's right 'Piece' as in piece of delicious pie, inspired by the concept of 'peace' as in flowers in tanks and rainbow signs. And really what better way is there to make peace than over a slice of rich and creamy frozen pie you didn't actually have to lift a finger to prepare, or bake? Now if only I could make 'piece' over the argument of which delicious Edwards frozen whole pie goes into our cart each shopping trip! See I love a good light and fluffy Strawberry Creme, while Jay wants to pack as many toppings, and as much flavor into every slice as possible. He tends to shop for indulgent flavors such as Hershey's Chocolate Creme or Cookies and Creme.

No joke, the pie fight is real in our house. One month we went several weeks without picking up an Edwards pie (gasp, weeks!) and upon cleansing our fast we couldn't agree on which pie to pick up. At one point Jay and I were pulling pies in and out of the cart, to the freezer, and back just waiting to see who would break first. I, being the oldest, and wisest, decided there would be NO PIE if we could not agree on ONE pie. Needless to say we went home pie-less. It's a travesty that has, thankfully, never repeated itself.
So, it's on days such as these, celebrating Pi, but not Pie, with pie- that I often reflect on ways in which I can be a better person. I'll be honest there have been a few disagreements here as of late and it was simply time to make 'piece' over common crust. In preparation for my Pi Day plan I went into my local grocer and picked out several of our favorite Edwards whole pies. One of them, sadly, did not make it to today's celebration, but it gave itself in the name of 'piece' and that is all a pie really can hope for.

Want to get in on the Pi Day fun? "This all feels so last minute, I don't have any time," you're probably thinking.

Well, I have great news for you, grab my free 'Let's make 'piece'!' printable here and pick up your favorite Edwards whole frozen pie on your way home from work/school/pretty much wherever. Edwards whole pies come in a delicious array of varieties and are ready to eat just minutes after removing them from the freezer. You can even count your 'drive time' back from the store as thaw time, if you must. Than all you need to do is grab a slice, and someone you've got beef with and turn it into pie when you make 'piece'!

Recently Jay and I have been hiding the remotes across the house in an effort to snag first picks on television programming. (Don't we just 'adult' the bestest?) I knew Pi Day was the perfect opportunity to make 'piece' once and for all and put all that remote control hogging business behind us for good. (Or, at least until Game of Thrones comes back on.) I tied up the remotes with one of my Pie Day printables and presented them to him on a box of Edwards Hershey's Chocolate Creme Pie. He was pretty speechless, so I attempted to cut a slice out of his pie while he pondered what was truly going on. Okay, so I may not be very good at all this peace business, but I can certainly get down with a great 'piece' of delicious pie!

So there you have it, my Pi Day master plan, revealed. It's not really top secret, and you don't need an excuse to enjoy a delicious pie- BUT if it helps make you feel better about indulging in something sweet, who not make 'piece' while you do it? Now, tell me, how are you celebrating Pi Day this year? What pie do you wish you had a slice to celebrate with?

Momma Told Me: All work and no play....

This year's been a pretty crazy one for me. In between the multiple trips to visit, or provide care for, family, I've also taken on an unexpected move. And by unexpected I mean I was literally notified the house we'd been hoping to land came available overnight and was ready to move within days, where we'd previously spoken about timelines closer to mid 2017. All this on top of juggling the hustle and bustle of imminent holidays. Let's just say I don't know if we'll be enjoying our turkey dinner on chair cushions on the floor at our old condo, or a dining table surrounded by moving boxes at the house. Yes, my days lately aren't short of things to do and ways to consume time.

Move or no move, we all feel the stress of the season during this time of the year, which provides just added stress and struggle on top of everyday challenges like juggling a family and a job, writing a meal plan with dietary restrictions, or taking on a leadership position at ones' volunteer gig. So I've taken a few minutes to zen out (because blogging is one of my ways to unwind) and share with you my favorite 5 Minute Me Time Moment break ideas.
5 Me Time Moments In 5 Minutes- With FREE Adult Coloring Printable Sheet #OREOThinSide (AD) http://cbi.as/5zqdi
1. Add a little atmosphere- The first thing I do when I start to feel a little overwhelmed is close my eyes and take a deep breath. I let all of the senses I might not have been focusing on right then take over. Since this usually involves scent and sound, I'll typically light a candle or incense, and even turn on a familiar melody. By engaging parts of your brain currently dormant, you can help switch off the parts which are being overwhelmed and provide some valuable moments to recharge. It's the simplest form of meditation and it only requires shifting your senses from one focus to another. Of course, aromatherapy may also provide key benefits to recharge if you choose your scents meticulously.
2. Engage in a little furriendly therapy- My favorite way to recharge at home is free, always available, and provides an immediate lift whether I have 2 minutes or 20. The same furry faces that greet you with excitement when you first get home after a long day will be just as enthusiastic for your affection when you pause to take time out to acknowledge them during your daily tasks. Whether it's a 5 minute walk around the block with the dog, some affectionate cat scratches with the cat, or a full blown fetch session in the backyard, pets provide an instant endorphin lift.
5 Me Time Moments In 5 Minutes- With FREE Adult Coloring Printable Sheet #OREOThinSide (AD) http://cbi.as/5zqdi
3. Just drop everything- It may sound like the beckoning of an apocalyptic doom, but (in most cases) you really can just drop it all for 5 minutes and the world won't burst into flames around you. A lot of the time we self impose stress upon ourselves by setting unreasonable goals, or simply feeding a drive to accomplish something. Your achievement will be just as worthwhile should it take you 5 more minutes to complete, and you're actually likely to be more productive after a quick break than if you'd just powered through. Of course, if you're like me, you'll be tempted to tinker and spend your 'me time' doing other things that may feel productive, but aren't quite considered a break. Make sure you remove yourself from these temptations by heading to a quiet room, or even outside for your break.
5 Me Time Moments In 5 Minutes- With FREE Adult Coloring Printable Sheet #OREOThinSide (AD) http://cbi.as/5zqdi
4. Reward Yourself- If you find it hard to just sit still and unwind grabbing a snack or treat can help fill your break time with positive vibes and delicious reflections. I recently discovered NEW Lemon OREO Thins at my local Ralphs and my 5 minute breaks because a lot more delicious. For those who still haven't experienced these thinner, crispier, OREO cookies, with the perfect cream to cookie ratio- you simply must pick up a package. There are now 5 varieties to choose from, Original, Golden, Mint, and NEW Chocolate and NEW Lemon filled OREO Thins. Just a few of these crispy sandwich cookies put an instant smile on my face.
5 Me Time Moments In 5 Minutes- With FREE Adult Coloring Printable Sheet #OREOThinSide (AD) http://cbi.as/5zqdi
5. Let your creative juices flow- It may seem contradictory to throw so much of yourself into something while seeking respite from a strenuous task but, again, engaging a different side of your brain can instantly help refresh and recharge. Naturally what one person finds creatively freeing might be different for another, but many agree that the trend of modern adult coloring is universally appealing. Whether you enjoy being meticulous in planning your color placement and the zen of coloring inside the lines, or you thrive on the anarchy of wild color combinations and the prospect of a purple kitten, taking just 5 minutes to sit down and focus your creative energies can truly recharge in the most hectic of times.
So there you have it, my favorite 5 Minute Me Time Moment ideas. You may be tempted to do some of them at the same time (I know the allure of a golden OREO cookie with a perfect crisp crunch gets me every time) but you really should try to practice these ideas on their own. After all, it's only 5 minutes- when you start to add multiple breaks in you really only end up overwhelming your time, and it hardly becomes a break at all. That is, unless you commit to a 20 or 30 minute break- and I'm all for that. Too bad the real world doesn't pencil more of those in, right?
5 Me Time Moments In 5 Minutes- With FREE Adult Coloring Printable Sheet #OREOThinSide (AD) http://cbi.as/5zqdi
If you're inspired by my suggestions, and want to see what some other really awesome people have to say about how to unwind this holiday season (or any time, really) then you simply must check out this Social Hub for some 'Thinspiration'- and make sure to pick up some OREO Thins at your local Ralphs too. They're the perfect pairing for our FREE Printable Adult Coloring Page above, too! Now, tell me, what's your favorite way to unwind and take a few minutes of me time when the world gets crazy around you?

What Daughter Says: You're only at your best until you're not- taking 5 minutes out to recharge doesn't make you less efficient, it makes you more effective.
