After 3 years of blogging here on Momma Told Me, it's likely my devoted readers know I have an eclectic sense of style. I love all things vintage, especially 'thrift store finds,' but also love things that are particularly sparkly and colorful. Sound like the set of your favorite soap opera? It's not quite that bad, but, heading towards my late 20's, I still manage to let out a girlish shriek now and then when passing my favorite independent boutique. Yes, I have made this site all about me; well, me and Momma, but you get the point. I hunt high and low on and offline to find the most buzz worthy topics and brands before they explode on Pinterest and your social media streams. Sometimes the things I like are not quite mainstream, but they always bring a smile to my face, or enlighten my life in some manner. It goes without saying that Momma was a much more practical woman. If we could get 100 cable-ties for $.99, then I would have never been permitted to pay $8 for one quarter that amount, simply on the merit that they were 'cute.'
And so I rebel, in adulthood, littering my home and life with colorful baubles and trinkets, as Momma would say. Naturally, I see it more as an inspired approach to design and functionality, but we'll leave that up for debate. In any case, I recently came across a company that truly captivated me. Their whimsical approach to modern products and tasks was quite refreshing, and especially tempting with such modest price points. Mohzy describes themselves as a "Canadian West-Coast culture company...." that combines design with "smart products." Smart products indeed, their diverse range of merchandise covers popular branded accessories with Internationally recognized Hello Kitty, to simple cable ties with animal cut-out anchors. There is a common theme, however, all products tie into modern tech solutions; from cutting bulk cord fuss to connecting mobile devices on the go, Mohzy offers affordable, and stylish, solutions for the modern consumer.
I'd be lying if I didn't admit I was the most attracted to the brand's new Zoo Cable Ties. Introduced in late 2012, these simple, thin 9" cable ties come in a rainbow of colors and feature 6 recognizable animals as cutout tabs. While it's simply adorable to see a little orange lion hanging off the cable tie on my MP3 headset, these tabs are also practical when attaching gift tags to parcels, or even as makeshift zipper pulls. Sold as 30/package, with 5 of each animal, the Mohzy Zoo Cable Ties can dress up key fobs, luggage tags, wine stems and place-cards for any event or occasion. It's hard to imagine anything cuter than the hippo, elephant, giraffe, duck, lion, and piggy; but I'd love to see the brand branch out with more themes! These extra thin cable ties seem to pack a lot of strength and attach with incredible ease; I actually prefer them to the thicker traditional varieties. Best of all, these ties can be especially useful when organizing cords by appliance or theme, for quick problem solving later.
Another simple, yet essential, product in the Mohzy lineup is the Loop USB cable, available in licensed Hello Kitty designs, or stylized classic popular prints. As indicated by the name, the Loop can effectively attach to your wrist, purse, or backpack thanks to the built in magnetic strips on either end. It is effectively a wearable technology aid, serving as a functional USB/micro-USB to Apple connector, then switching to a bracelet when not in use. The Loop has a Micro-USB and standard USB adapter on either end and comes with one of the brand's Multi-Colored Apple USB Adapters. In our home I'm constantly finding forgotten stashed tablet and phone cables; and always seem to have a mess of tangled adapters, for charging, in my handbag. The Loop is the perfect way to keep your data transfer, and charging, source on hand at all times (literally). Naturally, the magnetic power can also be used to affix the Loop USB cable to most traditional magnetic surfaces as well, including filing cabinets and the fridge.
One of the more unexpected products in the Mohzy range are the Mini Petal Solar Lights, sold in packs of 3. Sold in leafy green, only, these unique white bulbs, with over sized green 'petals' feature a rechargeable internal battery that connects to the top-faced solar panel. While one's first inclination would be to stash these in a garden planter, or along a walkway, I think they'd last longest indoors. The Petal Solar Lights do include a notched 'steak' at the base, to stabilize and encourage soft texture bases (like soil), but the screw on cap may not withstand harsher climates and weathers. At it's core, this adorable solar light is made primarily of plastic, which keeps the customer's cost down, but makes it most efficient indoors. I also found the soft LED glow that comes from the bulb inside is much more of an ambient lighting than practical one. While I wouldn't light up my walkway with the Mini Petal Solar Light set, they do make for adorable decor on the cabinet in the hallway at night.
In all, having experienced the products in person, I find the price points to be more than reasonable, a steal even. The manufacturing seems solid, and each of these three items has held up through months of regular use so far. My biggest complaint is the lack of new innovations in the Mohzy line- I want to see MORE captivating products. I can only dare to imagine where the tongue in cheek design team will dare to go next. Currently the Mohzy products can be bought internationally online, a minor drawback; though I could see the product range doing very well with a licensed agreement with Hot Topic or Target. In all, Mohzy is just about as old as our blog, and that's fairly young for such an innovative company. I'm sure we will be seeing plenty more buzz worthy products from them in the coming years!
