Most women love to play dress up. They change their makeup, their hair, their nails, their shoes- everything on a day to day basis. Most men, however, prefer to keep things simple; they gravitate towards the same pants day in and out, wear shoes until they began to show holes (and some men long after), and prefer comfort over fashion, hands down. If I hear Jay try to argue a case for his paint splattered, checkered Vans, one more time on the way out the door to visit my family, I'll probably burst a vein. In general fashion is about self expression, and the person wearing the clothes and accessories should always feel comfortable in them; but every wife/girlfriend/significant other has known the embarrassment of a lazy outfit at least once. For the most part, Jay picks out his own clothes- I let him do him, so to say; on the contingency that we always have a 'backup' outfit suited to more dressy occasions.

As long as we have been together shoes have been a point of contention between us. Vans aren't cheap shoes, but they're also not generally appropriate for a nice meal out. When I discovered HeyDude Italian shoes in canvas and suede I was immediately in love with the casual Abetone Lady boots, and style conscious Vinci Oxford style men's shoe. Unfortunately, for me, the women's sizing doesn't cover my 12US feet, but the gorgeous range of preppy to casual shoes of HeyDude would certainly work for my style challenged prince.

I've bought numerous shoes for Jay in the past; most an utter disaster- too narrow here, too long there, and not comfortable to wear for more than 10 minutes. (And I thought I had shoe woes with a size 12 women's!) When the HeyDude shoes arrived Jay actually pestered me as to when he could wear them. When he first put them on I held my breath, waiting for the inevitable complaints. To my delight I got the opposite, "These are actually quite comfortable, I can see myself wearing these." he remarked, warming up to them. As we trounced outside to snap a few pictures I heard yet another remark about comfort. Of course I knew there was a special patented 1/2" thick removable insole inside. All HeyDude shoes include a pigskin lined EVA/Rubber insole that is entirely replaceable.

With it's lightweight military canvas and Italian suede toe, the Vinci shoes have an unexpected rugged tread that offers and updated take on the classic wing-tip. They're exceptionally lightweight, but durable, and breathe well during extended wear. These are the shoes I always envisioned my prince charming would wear; something classically elegant, yet modernly updated. The Vinci's almost have a worldly feel to them, that makes me wish I had a corner pub to frequent, or long cobblestone strewn hills to walk. The only downside we found was that there currently are no half sizes, so it's best to order a size up for the most comfortable fit. Other than that, we are in love with Jay's new 'dress' shoes, that can easily be transitioned into casual everyday.

If I told you I was going to make a dress from stainless steel and matching aluminum shoes, you'd likely think I just stepped of an Unconventional task on Project Runway(BRAVO, TV). But the reality is that modern designers worldwide are now pushing the limits of materials on the premise of avant-gard, upcyled, eco-friendly fashion. They deconstruct and re-build materials to fit their needs, or express their vision. Would you believe a petticoat made entirely of recycled cigarette butts has been on the runway in Paris? Or that designers such as Gucci and Prada regularly incorporate post consumer plastics into their forms and fashions? Yes, the world of an artist is near limitless in creativity and design, but why create these things if no one will wear them? Sure you can weave metals into chain-mail and call it couture, but even if your 90 pound runway model survives the catwalk, only the truly fashion devoted (and obscure) will ever attempt to own it.

There is a fine line, where fashion meets eco-friendly; and for many years it has been one obscured with over dramatic intentions and impractical execution. Let's face it, being 'green' isn't exactly one of the top things thought of when we're classifying what's sexy or fashion forward. When I began a search for an eco-friendly accessory that was gender neutral I was not at all expecting WeWood. Made of 100% Natural Wood with no synthetic chemical treatments, and entirely Hypo Allergenic, this watch is as good as it looks. Packaged in a gift worthy display box, the WeWood watches include a timepiece tool and are truly breathtaking in person. With vivid grains, and natural highlights, it's a beautiful accessory that is easy to style. I love that this watch can get wet without fear of rusting or discoloration, and that Jay can easily care for it with a green oil rub or pledge-like seal. WeWood watches are incredibly light, and the 'Date' style has a wonderful ribbed band for comfortable fit and movement. The face is also easy to read, with bold accented hands and hour marks on a stylistic face. While the style might be a little chunky for some women, I have fallen in love with WeWOOD just as much and envision one under our tree this holiday season!
