Let's Talk: Setting The Mood with Romantic Music and the #HTC8 #Troop8x

Momma Told Me: Set the mood.

I'll admit, I never really quite 'got it'. Set the mood? People either come to an event or occasion with the intention of being celebratory or not; how could the choice of napkin or appetizer possibly make one feel any more or less festive? But, much like the sound of a lover's voice breathing softly on your neck, the right song can indeed 'set the mood' for memorable romance and tales to tell grandchildren. When I was in high school if you'd have asked me what my boyfriend could play to get me sweet I'd have said some inane nonsense like Lifehouse or Maroon 5 (hey, they were much edgier in their early days). And, despite my love for vintage fashion and retro living, I'd never have considered myself the sort of old soul that would so love and adore this particular artist, myself only 26. But, if you asked me today what the most romantic song is I'd, without hesitation, offer you the name of a single man; Leonard Cohen.

If you don't recognize the name, don't feel bad; he's not gracing the top 20 pop charts, or even on your 'usual' compilation of Now That's What I Call Romance #92. Mr Cohen is much more of a poet than a musical artist, for his texts and lyrics have been translated into hits since covered by hundreds of artists worldwide (You may have heard of a little song called 'Hallelujah'?) So wildly covered, in fact, I couldn't sift through the over 300 covers on SoundCloud to find a clip of the original to share, though those who are fans of the (2009) film Watchmen may remember a very poignant clip played during the steamy love scene. I digress.

As an artist that has held much esteem and notoriety in the world of true artists for decades before my very birth, Leonard Cohen has the perfect masculine voice, fringed with just enough rasp, and eloquent instrumentals to intrigue first time listeners and still captivate long term fans today. To choose one Cohen song as the most romantic, let alone a favorite, would be to choose from a library of over 300 lyrical (and countless more instrumental and recited) tracks recorded over a 50+ year career. One of his most recognized songs, "I'm Your Man," 1988, is perhaps the most mainstream; full of whimsical lyrics that play with words and tell the tale of the man who yearns to mold to a woman's every desire. The much darker, and poetic, "Waiting For The Miracle" has been interpreted by countless scholars and fans alike, all varied in views and opinion- truly making it beautiful in my eyes. And lastly, an unexpected romantic favorite of mine is one that initially drove me nuts with it's melodic introduction, "Dance Me To The End of Love." "We're both of us beneath our love, we're both of us above, Dance me to the end of love."

When it comes to setting the mood this Valentine's Day I'll be stocking plenty of Leonard Cohen on my HTC 8x Windows Phone with help from apps like SoundCloud. Thanks to the impressive clarity of Beats Audio, included with the #HTC8 phone, I can enjoy every layered instrument and backup vocal of my favorite seductive artist. What songs will you have on hand this holiday?

What Daughter Says:  My Windows Phone helps me enjoy the most romantic tracks in any setting, for unplanned excursions and new memories this Valentine's!

  11. I don't have a smart phone yet, so I can't listen to music, but I'm hoping that changes when my contract is up! I love Josh Groban's first self-titled CD. There's just something about him singing in Italian that sets a very romantic mood.

  16. I can't really pin any one song down as it really depends on my mood. Yeah a song doesn't really effect my mood as much a scent will.
