Despite having completed the majority of my holiday shopping in October, I often find this time of year especially hard in regards to motivation. Don't mistake that sentiment for a lack of looming deadlines and festive chores, of which there seem to be a limitless amount, but the balance of my enthusiasm for the sheer number of hurdles yet to be jumped. When you're a child the holidays are merely a magical time where a constant parade of perfected sweets and beautifully wrapped gifts fall into your hands. As an adult, on the other side of that magic, it's running to and from stores filling shopping lists, planning seating arrangements for holiday dinners, contemplating secret 'Santa' hiding places, and making room for the inevitable trough of gifts to be opened throughout. And, as the radio stations turn to 24/7 holiday tunes, and the Mall speakers pipe in only the most festive of music, I find myself yearning for the anchoring escape of my own identity. I am not an elf, I am a human; and when I'm stuffing myself in the attic crawl space to hide this year's Monster High playset, I need something extra small and extra loud to get me through, a little #PocketBoom, if you will.
